Student Breakout Night wins to Jones, Macku, Smith, Bassinger and Boston
By Greg Soukup
Student Breakout Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Great Clips and Sun Drop, began with warm temperatures as the fans came through the front gates, greeted by an assortment of the mascots who would take part in Mascot Wars later on. The Great Clips mascot shared the top spot with Homer the Saltdog when the final votes were in. Also featured at intermission was the Rocket Fizz Candy Dash as the youngsters were invited onto the track to snag their part of approximately 5000 pieces of candy.
Chris Alcorn’s #3 made contact with another car and ended up flipping over in the second heat of the IMCA Modifieds for the only serious incident in the preliminary heats. His team would make repairs however, allowing Chris to advance to the A Feature through the B.
The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature saw Anthony Kobus’ 13K lead the first lap followed by the 25 of Buddy Ray Jones, the 12K of Ron Karpisek and Denny Berghahn’s 6. Berghahn moved up to third on lap 2 and Jones took the point on lap 3. Rick Rohr moved the 74 to fourth on lap 6. 2 laps later Karpisek and the 07L of Logan Jessen spun to a halt in turns 3 & 4 and Benji Legg took the #25B to the pits but returned before the action restarted. At that point the top 4 were Jones, Kobus, Berghahn and Rohr. Rohr moved to third a lap after the restart but the yellow flag was thrown for debris in turns 3 & 4 as Todd Sanford had the 7R pushed into the pits. Three more laps were run as Berghahn grabbed 2nd and Rohr took over third again. Rohr spun in turn 4 on the next lap, putting Kevin Jochum’s 90 into fourth. Jochum advanced to third three laps later and Nathan Kobus got the #15 into fourth a couple of laps later only to lose the position to Max Harder in the 34 shortly after that. At the finish the top 4 were Jones, Berghahn, Jochum and Harder.
“FINALLY!! After 18 years of racing I got my first win!!” said Buddy Ray. “When I got the lead I kept telling myself ‘stay smooth’, and I did for awhile. But, I hit a rut and dropped to 5th for a little bit but came right back and got the lead back. So, again I told myself ‘just stay focused’ and I guess I did” he continued. “All of the guys were starting to call me B Feature Buddy because I had to run the B every week to get into the A. I always got there, but could never get up front in it. When I actually finally qualified for the A I got the win” he stated. Buddy Ray went on to relate “I owe so much to my sponsors, and also have to mention the Holiday Horsepower Drive. But, my biggest thanks go out to the staff here at Eagle, the fans and my fellow racers. As I said in my on-track interview, this is the classiest and greatest track ANYWHERE! And that is why I said ‘Eagle, where dreams come true’. I probably won’t sleep for 3 days!!”. Jones’ sponsors include Buffalo Wild Wings, Joe’s Karting, Dave Foote Hauling and Sybesma Graphics.
Thom Marsh’s 93 led the initial circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A with Garrett Bolander’s 98X, the 20T of Steve Shepard and Tim LaPointe in the 18 rounding out the top 4. LaPointe moved up one spot on lap 3 and Josh Kennell moved his #71K to fourth. The next time around LaPointe got very loose, allowing Kennell to take third and Shepard sat in fourth. RJ Macku grabbed fourth in his 1R on lap 7. Bolander advanced to 2nd the next time around, only to lose the spot to Kennell after another lap. Macku moved to third on lap 10, then up to second on the next circuit. The 1R got past Marsh with 3 left and Kennell got around Marsh on the next lap as Mark McKinney moved into fourth the next lap. At the checkers it was Macku, Kennell, Marsh and McKinney.
“Well, I missed the tires this week, so I didn’t DNF. I’m glad that they put the tire back” Macku kidded to open the interview with a big smile. He concluded the interview by stating “I was being patient and taking my time this week. I especially wanted to be sure I passed Tom Marsh cleanly, since he’s a good friend. So, I took my time and got the win”. RJ’s sponsors include Big Johnson Race Chassis, The Shop Inc, FRE Racing Engines, Chris High Painting and Red Line Grafix.
Next on the track was the A Main for the Rev Honey IMCA Modifieds. Shane Hiatt in the 21H, Brian Cudly’s 57, Scott Bivens’ S56 and Justin Wulf in the 86 were the top 4 at the end of lap #1, but lap 2 saw both Bivens and Wulf move up a spot as Terry Richards moved into fourth. Richards got past Wulf the next lap. Richards moved up again into second on lap 5 with the 95 of Dylan Smith cracking the top 4 the next time around. Smith advanced into third 2 laps later. The action continued on lap #9 as Bivens again moved to third, only to be passed by Wulf the next lap. Another 4 circuits were in the books when Chris Abelson came up to fourth, but Bob Zoubek’s 5S and Cudly spun in turn 4. At that point the top 4 were Hiatt, Smith, Richards and Wulf. Wulf got back into third on the restart. Smith moved into the lead 3 laps later but Hiatt retook the lead the next time around. On the next circuit Richards and Wulf passed Smith, but the next lap saw Smith retake third as Johnny Saathoff’s 96J grabbed fourth and Wulf snagged the lead. Smith moved into second the next lap and then into first before the lap was completed. Saathoff moved to third to put Hiatt into fourth the next time around. Saathoff continued his charge and moved to second, moving Wulf to third. At the end it was Smith, Saathoff, Wulf and Hiatt.
“It was great to get my first win in quite awhile here at Eagle. The car ran really good and fast. The track was really fast too, but I had to manhandle the car. After losing the lead I had to just work my way back to the lead” Smith related. He finished by saying “I want to thank Mike and Lisa Goeke, my Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, Damian and the girls”. Dylan’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Active Life Chiropractic, Icon Racing Pistons, DSR, Eckley Racing Engines, Pinnacle Agency, Vrbka Ag Solutions, Circle Racing Wheels, Bilstein, Hypercoil, Moser Engineering and ISP Seats.
The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact A Feature saw Barry Kinnersley’s 00 lead the first lap followed by Chad Bassinger’s 4X, Erica Cronin’s 30 and the B32 of Brian Haller. Haller got past Cronin on lap 2 and Maynard Kinnersley moved his #18 around Cronin the next lap. The 18 got loose going into turn 4 and ended up flipping onto its side before coming down on its wheels. A lengthy red flag occurred as Maynard was cut out of his car and then transported to the hospital for observation. As of this time, no further details on Kinnersley’s condition are known. When the cars started up again it was Barry Kinnersley, Bassinger, Haller and the 26 of Nick Linblad. Three laps after the restart Bassinger took over the lead, Haller moved into second and Linblad also passed Kinnersley for third. Three laps later Kinnersley lost his right rear tire and went to the pits. At that time the order was Bassinger, Haller, Linblad and the #5 of Larry Cronin. Six laps later Linblad overtook Haller to snag second.
“I just hope that Maynard is okay. He’s one of my heroes, and I grew up watching him race” Bassinger said. He concluded the interview by stating “It was great to get my first win here at Eagle. I won the points last year, but never got a win. I want to thank my Mom and Dad, my step-parents and everyone else who comes out to watch me. And, I did it all with ‘Old Faithful’ after not being able to keep this year’s car running”. Chad’s sponsors include Kreifels Plumbing, Shipley Flooring, Higley Chiropractic, WARA and Charlie White.
The final feature was for the Budweiser 360 Sprints. Mike Boston’s #51 led the first lap with the 22 of Billy Alley, the 4 of Jordan Boston and Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 close behind. Jordan took the lead on the second lap but Mike got back by him on lap 3 as Alley also passed Jordan. Jordan and Alley battled for second on lap 7 with Alley holding the position at the flag stand. Lap 11 saw Jordan take second and Alley dropped into the infield 2 laps later. Gage Dorr spun the #17 on lap 14, causing the yellow flag to fly. At that time it was Mike Boston, Jordan Boston, Grossenbacher and the 71 of Tige Jensen the top 4. On the restart lap Jensen moved into third as Stu Snyder’s 23S also passed Grossenbacher. Snyder advanced another spot on the next lap to take third. 2 more circuits were in the books when Jordan Boston slowed to a stop in turn 2 for another caution. Tige Jensen stopped on the restart with a flat rear tire. Jensen got the tire changed and returned to the fray. That made the top 4 Mike Boston, Snyder, Grossenbacher and the 14G of Gene Acklund. Grossenbacher stopped on the back stretch on the restart, moving the 91 of Mitchell Moore into fourth. One lap after the restart Terry Holliman stopped in turn 2, also with a flat rear tire. Moore moved into third on the restart lap. 3 laps later Lee Bowes spun the #56B in turns 3 and 4. One lap after the restart Jensen got back up to fourth only to hit the Armco in turn 1 giving fourth back to Acklund. At the checkers the top four were Mike Boston, Snyder, Moore and Acklund.
“All I want to say is thank you to Roger and the track prep crew for giving us a good track for all of the classes to run on. I’d love to take the win next week again; that would be great! Also, a big thanks to my wife; it’s her motor in the car” Mike related. Mike’s sponsors include JKL, Wojo Painting and MTO Clean.
