Swarthout, Kracht, Richards, Gannon and Snyder grab wins at Dads Rock Night
By Greg Soukup
Dads Rock! Night at Eagle Raceway Saturday night, presented by Bud Light and Ball Park started under cloudy skies but by the time racing began the large crowd was graced with sun and great competition. The preliminary events were run without serious incident.
Dustin Thayer’s 10T led the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A feature at the end of the first lap followed by Kevin Jochum’s 90, the 5B of Matt Boucher and Marty Steinbach in the #5. The yellow flag was shown on lap #2 when Randy Archer spun the 20A in turns 3 & 4. Steinbach headed to the pits with broken suspension on the rear of his racer. That moved the 23 of Steve Swarthout into the fourth spot. The restart was aborted when debris was discovered in turn 1. Swarthout advanced into third on lap 3 and took second the next lap. It took Swarthout only two more laps to grab the lead from Thayer. Max Harder moved the #34 into third on lap 9 as Boucher regained fourth. Harder snagged second on lap 13 as Nelson Volbrecht gained fourth in the 11X. Lap 15 saw another yellow for debris. The top four remained unchanged to the finish with Swarthout winning, Harder 2nd, Thayer 3rd and Volbrecht 4th.
“It’s been a long, bad year for us with LOTS of bad luck. I’m thrilled to finally get my first win here at Eagle” Swarthout said. “I need to thank the employees at Twin Rivers for making it possible for me to race. Also Max Harder and Russell Harms for working on my car all night, as well as Nick Warnke and Matthew Keller for keeping the car fast on the track. Also, Jet Racing for making sure that Max and I can get to the track weekly. And, there’s Rev Honey for keeping the guys in the shop awake during those late nights” Swarthout continued. Steve concluded by stating “I’m so glad that I get to come to a setting like Eagle to race with 40 cars. Here it’s hard enough to just make the A, let alone get the win”.
Lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Derick Noonan’s #21 out front with Robbie Hobus’ 83, the 12 of Dan Noonan and Don Kros in the 53 close behind. Lee Kracht jumped up to third on lap 3 in the 10K as Josh Kennell took fourth in the 71K. Roy Armstrong moved his 6R into third on lap 5, putting Kracht back to fourth. Kracht repassed Armstrong the next time around. The next time around Armstrong blew a front tire coming to turn 1, pushing his racer up into Kennell who ran headlong into the large implement guarding the pit entrance. A long red flag condition ensued as Kennell was extricated from his car and the guardrail was repaired. Kennell was able to walk to the ambulance for a ride back to his pit. That made the running order Noonan, Hobus, Kracht and RJ Macku’s 1R. Lap 10 saw Chad Fegley spin the 13F in turn 2 and Ben Becher clipped Fegley’s rear bumper resulting in Becher coming to a halt on the back stretch. Kracht and Macku both advanced one spot on lap 15 and 2 laps later Kracht snared the lead as Macku came up to second. Hobus moved up to third on lap 18. Hobus spun in turn 4 that lap, but kept going after losing 2 spots. That moved Don Hall Jr.’s 92 into fourth. Macku passed Kracht in turn 3 of the final lap for the apparent win, but was moved back one position for not holding his line. In the end it was Kracht, Macku, Noonan and Hall Jr.
“We’ve been 2nd a lot, even though we’ve been running good. But, we finally got the car hooked up and got a win” Kracht stated. “I have so many people to thank; ‘Downtown Brown’, Tunnissel Farms, Jay’s Tire, Hardford Glass, Skrdla Ranch, Big Johnson Trucking, Diamond Farms, Jansing Truck and Tractor and Sieh Trucking” he continued. He concluded the interview by relating “I want to say thanks to my Mom & Dad for driving 4 ½ hours to see me race, and my aunt and uncle for driving 6 hours also. And there’s Justin, Ed and Eric for the truck and trailer. A big thanks to my wife and baby boy Ryan for allowing me to race. Last I want to say thanks to Roger for the great facility and great track tonight. This is a really fun place to come and compete”.
The beginning of the Rev Honey IMCA Modified Feature saw Nathan Landauer’s 11N get out of shape going into the first turn, resulting in a melee in turns 1 & 2. 3 cars that were caught up in the mess drove to their pits with significant damage. They were Chris Ableson’s 1X, the 95 of Dylan Smith and Lance Borgman’s 76. Landauer was towed off the track. As the red lights were turned off the first official lap saw Shane Hiatt’s 21H in front with Dustin Anderson’s 8A 2nd, Doug Deterding’s 13 third and the18 of Terry Richards fourth. Richards moved up one position on lap 2 as Bob Zoubek moved the 5S to fourth. Anderson grabbed the lead on lap 3. The next lap saw Richards and Zoubek both advance one position to second and third. Chad Anderson got the 8C into fourth on lap 6. Dustin Anderson, who had been running the high line, got too high going into turn 1 on lap 8 and caught the tire at the pit entrance. The 8A rolled several times, coming to a stop on its top. The car was righted and Dustin emerged unhurt but his evening was over. That made the top four Richards, Zoubek, Chad Anderson and Deterding. Johnny Saathoff moved the 96J into fourth on the restart and then into third on lap 10. Saathoff passed Zoubek for second shortly after that. On the last lap Deterding also got past Chad Anderson to grab fourth. At the finish the top four were Richards, Saathoff, Zoubek and Deterding.
“I like seeing you come to talk to me” Richards said. He continued by stating “I can’t believe we won two weeks in a row. Hopefully we can keep having good luck, like the luck we’ve had avoiding accidents”.
Next up was the A Main for the Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts. The top four at the end of the first circuit were Kevin Fearing’s #48, the 4A of Jesse Osmon, Amanda Rhiley in the 51 and Fred Johnson’s 69J. The yellow lights were lit on lap 2 when Travis Shellpeper’s 45S and the 56 of Blake Haas spun. Osmon went to the pits. That moved Kyle Gannon’s 66G into fourth. Gannon passed Johnson on lap 8. 10 more laps were in the books when Gannon took second and Johnson advanced to third. Gannon passed Fearing on the final lap to take the win.
“Thanks to everyone who helped me. Dad, Gary Bradley and Brian Haller. Of course, the 2 best girls in the world; Cara and Hailey; and Paragon Sanitation for all of their help. Last, thanks to the fans for cheering so loud every week”.
Although Stu Snyder’s 23S and the 17 of Gage Dorr banged wheels at the start of the Budweiser 360 Sprint Feature Snyder managed to hold the lead with Tige Jensen’s 71, Mike Boston in the 51 and the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher rounding out the top 4. Nick Bryan spun the #6 in turn 4 on lap 10. Bryan spun again in turn 4 of lap #12 as did Terry Holliman in the 23. Boston got past Jensen on the restart. The yellow lights were lit again on lap 15 as Jay Russell’s #76 stopped in turn 4 with a flat right front tire. Grossenbacher got past Jensen on lap 17. Holliman brought out the yellow flag again as he did a 360 degree spin in turn 4 on lap 17. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Snyder, Boston Grossenbacher and Jensen the top 4.
“I want to thank my sponsors for making it possible for me to race. This win goes to them” Snyder said. Stu’s sponsors include Shakers Gentleman’s Club, Davidson Plumbing and Welding, DFS Fabrication, Source One Powder Coating and Justin Haase.
