Freedom Fest wins go to Steinbach, Fegley, Saathoff, Haller and Dover

By Greg Soukup
For the second week in a row, rain fell Friday night to try and dampen the racing at Eagle Raceway. But, the track prep crew worked long and hard and racing went on at Freedom Fest presented by Jack Daniels Saturday evening. In the end, the weather benefited the festivities as several visitors stopped by “America’s Home Track” after their usual tracks were rained out.
All preliminary events were run without serious incidents.
The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature’s first lap saw a pair of 5’s out front as Shelly Andersen’s 5V led with the 5 of Marty Steinbach second, Joe Schidler’s K00 third and the 14 of Joey Danley in fourth. Danley took third on lap 2 but ended up back in fourth as Rick Rohr’s 74 moved into third. Danley again took third on lap 8 and Gary Saathoff took his #96 to fourth the next lap. 8 more circuits had been run when Danley snagged second, only to have the yellow flag fly. Andersen fell back in the closing laps and the last lap was the most exciting of the race as Danley took second, Saathoff grabbed third and the 5K of Kyle Prauner rounded out the top four.
“I’m so happy to finally get a win this year, after a LOT of bad luck this year. We’ve lost 2 motors and broken 2 transmissions” Steinbach said. Steinbach’s sponsors include Jonno’s Race Engines, Long Truck & Trailer, Farmers Insurance and O’Reilly Store #397.
Khrysta Stransky’s 39 led the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature followed by Justin Busboom’s 62, the 93 of Thom Marsh and Ben Becher in the B4. Becher passed Marsh on lap 2 but was repassed by Marsh the next time around as Busboom took the lead. Marsh got loose on lap 4 as Chad Fegley rocketed the 13F into second and Nick Beckman took the 22 into third, relegating Marsh to fourth. Fegley and Beckman both moved up another spot on lap 6 into first and second. Roy Armstrong got past Marsh on lap 10. The yellow flag flew the next lap for debris on the track. Armstrong jumped up to second on the restart lap. The yellow lights were lit again the next lap as Keith Dragoo’s 77D stopped at the entrance to pit road. At that time the top 4 were Fegley, Armstrong, Beckman and Busboom. Lap 13 saw Beckman get past Armstrong, but Armstrong retook the spot the next lap. Beckman slowed with a flat right front tire and eventually went into the pits. That put Becher back into fourth. The next lap saw the 4W of Joe Wollenhaupt and the 99 of Jason Tadlock come to a halt in turns 3 & 4. Becher managed to get around Busboom on the white flag lap. At the end Fegley was the winner, Armstrong held on for second, Becher took third and Busboom rounded out the top 4.
Fegley started the interview by stating “The car felt really good after we changed some stuff from last week. I was just protecting my position against Beckman, but when I saw Roy, I had to move up. I should have moved up earlier because it was nice running up there”. He concluded the interview by saying “I want to thank Keith Dragoo for letting me drive his car, and my wife and kids for putting up with the racing”. Chad’s sponsors include The Shop Inc., FRE Racing Engines, Sapp Brothers and National Lock and Safe.
The Rev Honey IMCA Modifieds were the next A Main. Doug Deterding’s 13, the 00 of Tim Pickens, Chris Ableson’s 1X and the 8A of Dustin Andersen were the top four on lap 1. Ableson and Anderson jumped to first and second on lap 2 and Clint Homan moved into fourth. Chris Alcorn’s 3 spun on lap 3 and the cars slowed under caution. On the restart Dylan Smith took his #95 past Homan for fourth. 2 Laps later Johnny Saathoff’s 96J got around both Homan and Smith for third. On lap 8 Justin Wulf’s 86 and the V45 of Rik Gropp tangled and stopped in turn 4 to cause the yellow to come out again. Lap 9 saw Saathoff and Smith move up to second and third. 2 more laps were in the books when Saathoff took the lead and Homan moved back into fourth as Andersen went to the pits. Ableson slowed and stopped in turn 4 a couple of laps later. That made the running order Saathoff, Smith, Homan and the 5S of Bob Zoubek. The last change in the top 4 was on lap 15 as Zoubek overtook Homan for third.
“I brought the kids tonight to see the fireworks, and I think that’s what helped me get the win” Saathoff said. “Roger puts on an awesome show every week. The track was a little rough, but with all the rain that we had, I thought it was pretty good” he continued. He concluded the interview by stating “The Jet Mod, NC Auto, 96KX car worked really well tonight in the rough. It’s always nice to win here at Eagle, and that’s #3 on the year”.
Jesse Osmon in the 4A, Kevin Fearing’s 48, the 66 of Trevor Noonan and Fred Johnson in the 69J led the first lap of the Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact A Feature. Amanda Rhiley spun the #51 on lap 2 and the yellow lights were lit. Osmon got loose on lap 3, allowing Fearing to take the lead, Noonan to take second and Brian Haller to get third in his B32. That left Johnson fourth. Haller snagged the lead on lap 5 as Noonan moved to second. The caution came out the next circuit for debris in turn 4. The action was fast and furious with 3-wide racing throughout the pack. Kyle Gannon got the 66G into third on lap 6 as Noonan fell to fourth. Chad Bassinger’s 4X cracked the top 4 on lap 10. 2 laps later Johnson lost his right front wheel & tire and the field again slowed under caution. Gannon took advantage of the restart to take the second spot. The last circuit saw Gannon spin, collecting Bassinger. Haller held on for the victory, Fearing was Second, Kenny Roberts was third and Ole Olsen was fourth.
Haller left before being interviewed.
The final A was for the Budweiser 360 Sprint cars. Lap #1 saw Mike Boston in the 51 out front followed by the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher, Mitchell Moore’s 91 and the 82 of Jason Danley. Danley passed Moore on lap 6, and Moore also fell to the 28 of Ken Klabunde the next lap. Lap 9 saw Ryan Kitchen’s 21 slow to a stop in turn 3. Jay Russell’s #76 suffered a flat right rear on lap 11 after contacting the Armco barrier in turns 1 & 2. Stu Snyder moved the 23S into fourth on the restart lap. Grossenbacher moved past Boston the next time around as Klabunde again moved to fourth. Klabunde moved up to third on lap 17. Shortly after that, Jack Dover moved the #53 into fourth. Billy Alley’s #22 stopped in turns 1 & 2 on lap 18. The yellow flag flew again on the restart as Jordan Boston’s 4 stopped in turns 3 & 4. Grossenbacher and Boston tangled as they came to the flag stand at the end of the restart and both racers were finished for the evening. The incident also collected the 77 of John Klabunde. That made the top 4 Ken Klabunde, Dover, Danley and Moore. The red lights were lit 2 laps after the restart for a medical emergency in the pits. Dover took the lead 2 laps after the action resumed and Danley moved up to second shortly after that. The top four at the checkered flag were Dover, Danley, Ken Klabunde and Snyder.
“I had to start way in the back after transferring from the B Feature, so I decided to use the tire rule to my advantage again. I waited until about half way and then gave it all I had” Dover said. He continued by stating “I knew I had to tighten up the car for the conditions, but that made it nice and free in 3 & 4. I wasn’t sure if I could get past Ken or not, because he was so good on the bottom. But, after I decided to go high in 3 & 4 I just set sail”. Dover’s sponsors include Thorpe’s Body Shop, Home Pride, Butlerbuilt, Trail Performance Coatings, Oil Medics and Ledger Motorsports.
