50th Season opener sees Harker, Kennell, Ward, Johnson & Edgington win
by Greg Soukup
After last weekend’s Eagle Raceway Icebreaker Challenge fell to Mother Nature, Saturday’s 50th season opener presented by the Nebraska Lottery was held under clear skies and before a good-sized crowd. After a very long and cold winter, fans and drivers alike were ready for a great night of racing and they got that and more as 164 cars checked in for the event. There was just 1 noteworthy incident in the preliminary action as Cory Hutchison went high in the 2nd Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprint heat and rolled his mount after contacting the turn 4 wall.
The first A Feature of the evening was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. The first lap was called back as Joe Schidler’s K00 stopped. In the ensuing scramble Max Harder’s 23, the 96 of Gary Saathoff and Nathan Kobus’ #15 all headed to the pits. The top 4 after the first official lap were Laini Schwartz’s 18, the 21 of Josh Blumer, Shawn Harker in the 40 and Steve Swarthout in the 23X. The yellow flag was shown on lap 3 as Evan Nemitz’s #71 hit the tire inside the berm of turn 2. Lap 6 saw Harker jump to 2nd place and grab the lead with 12 to go. Blumer took over second the next lap as Swarthout headed to the pits moving Mike Morton Jr.’s 71M to fourth. With 9 laps remaining Blumer went high in turn 4 and then went into the pits. That moved the 5K of Kyle Prauner into fourth. Prauner moved to third with 6 to go. The final yellow of the race came when Saathoff spun in turns 1 & 2 with 4 laps left. The final position change came when Prauner got past Schwartz with 2 to go. The top 4 at the end were Harker, Prauner, Schwartz and Morton, Jr.
“That was a good race and the track was decent for the first night of the year” Harker said. Although he’s been racing for 15 years this was only his second in a sport modified. “It was great getting a double after winning last night. I have to thank my wife Amy for letting me race. Also my crew for giving me the winning car tonight and of course my kids for being there for me”. Harker’s sponsors include All American Painting, Liberty Safe, Tex Cattle and Midwest Custom Concrete.
Next up was the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. RJ Macku led the field back to the flag stand in the 93 followed by Tim LaPointe’s 18, the 6A of Josh Kennell and Shawn Slezak in the 35S. Slezak jumped past Kennell and LaPointe for second on lap 2 with Kennell also passing LaPointe for 3rd. John Cain moved into 4th the next lap before Macku lost his right rear tire in turns 1 & 2. That made the running order Slezak, Kennell, Cain and the B4 of Ben Becher. On the restart Roy Armstrong got around Becher to take over the fourth spot. The final position change in the top 4 came when Kennell moved past Slezak for the lead which he held to the checkers.
“I have to thank Adam Armstrong for giving me the chance to drive this fast car for him. This is my first time in this car, and the car’s first win!” Kennel related. He continued by stating “I really didn’t think I’d win tonight on this dry-slick track, but I guess you could say that ‘I made it happen, Captain’. Thanks again Adam”. Kennell’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Icon Pistons and Scat Crankshafts.
The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds then came out for their finale. Hunter Marriott’s 62, the 86 of Justin Wulf, Shane Hiatt in the 21H and Tim Ward’s 4TW were the first four at the end of lap one. Tim Ward took the high line on lap four to jump up to second with Hiatt taking third and Chris Alcorn moving to fourth. Ward took over the lead with 8 to go. Dylan Smith moved to fourth with just 2 laps left after coming through the B Feature. At the finish it was Ward, Marriott, Hiatt and Smith.
Ward has made the trip from his home in Gilbert, Arizona again this year to race at Eagle and surrounding tracks. When asked the reason for this Ward said “I want to race against good cars on good tracks. And tonight’s race was a good one on a tough track. It wore me out for sure”. Ward’s sponsors include Jet Racing, DSR, Rip’s, LaFrance Motorsports and Pratt Wraps.
Josh Johnson put his #25 in the lead at the end of the first lap for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts A Main with Brian Haller’s 2CS, the 29 of Matt Moyer and Ole Olsen in the 23 close on his rear bumper. Moyer and Olsen both passed Haller on lap 2 and lap 6 saw Chad Bassinger move his 4X past Haller on lap 6. Bassinger got past Olsen with 7 to go making the final top 4 Johnson, Moyer, Bassinger and Olsen.
“This new car finally got me my first win after 4 years of racing. My main goal was to get a win here at Eagle, because I love racing here. I owe a lot to my family for helping me come out and of course my fiancé Shannon for understanding my racing habit” Johnson related. Johnson’s sponsors are Belmont Husky Service and Into Metal.
Last onto the high banks for their A Feature was the new class this year; the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Jeff Edgington put the 4E out front at the end of lap #1 with Matt Richards’ 44, the 1B of Brandon Horton and Dan Satriano’s 95 were in hot pursuit. Richards spun in turns 1 and 2 on lap 4. Most of the racers managed to avoid him, but both Richards and the 100 of Clint Benson went to the pits. That moved Mike Boston in the 51 to fourth. Boston moved up to second on the restart and then advanced to second the next time around. Boston was sent to the rear of the field when he lost his nose wing on lap 5, making the top 4 Edgington, Horton, Satriano and the 18 of Terry Richards. Terry moved up to third 2 laps after the restart. Greg Bolte put his 00 in fourth with 10 to go and jumped to second the next lap. Boston again cracked the top 4 after another circuit, moving back to second shortly after that with Terry Richards taking third the same lap. At the checkers it was Edginton, Boston, Terry Richards and Bolte.
When asked how it felt to win the first ever 305 Racesaver A Feature at Eagle Jeff stated “It’s kind of nice to be #1, but I was just glad to get a good finish. After running a 305 for the last 7 years I still love doing it” Jeff said. He continued with “I actually slowed down because I knew Boston would be coming up from the back. When I heard him I got going again. You had to be careful because like most tracks the first few nights it was soft and got some ruts. But, the win makes it all well worth it”. Edgington’s sponsors include Rafter H Trucking, BTE Trucking and Wizard Air Brushing.
“50 years of slingin’dirt” continues next weekend as the wingless wonders of USAC return to America’s Home Track to tackle the high banks in their 410 sprinters for The Rumble in the Bullring presented by Coors Light and Sam’s Club. The Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprints and the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds will serve as support classes for the evening. The front gates swing open at 5:30 with racing at 6:30. Adults are just $15, youths 6-12 are only $5 with children 5 and under free. Pit gates open at 4.
