Harker, Macku, Andersen, Moyer & Boston win during Mom’s Tribute

Harker, Macku, Andersen, Moyer & Boston win during Mom’s Tribute

By Greg Soukup

The hardy fans who showed up for Diva Dash-Mom’s Tribute sponsored by the Lincoln Saltdogs Saturday were rewarded for braving the chilly weather by great racing all evening long.

Nick Bryan flipped the #52 in the initial Budweiser IMCA Sprint Heat #1, but returned to compete in the A Feature. This was the only serious incident in the preliminary action.

Dana Deeke in the 36, Matt Boucher’s 5B, Cory Hutchison’s 96C and Gary Saathoff’s 96 were the first 4 at the end of lap #1 of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified Feature. Shawn Harker moved his #40 into fourth on lap #6 and vaulted into the lead shortly after that as Saathoff moved to 2nd, Laini Schwartz took over 3rd and Deeke fell to 4th. Jesse Osmon looped his 4A in turns 1 & 2 with 9 to go for the first yellow flag of the race. With 6 left Joe Schidler spun the K00 in turn 2. On the restart Nathan Kobus passed Deeke for fourth and from there to the flag the battle between he and Schwartz battle tooth and nail but Schwartz held on to third with Harker winning, Saathoff second and Kobus fourth.

Harker left before he could be interviewed.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next in the A Feature line-up. RJ Macku jumped forward quickly to move the #93 to the lead with Brandon Baker’s 7B, the 4W of Joe Wollenhaupt and Troy Dowty’s 17T close behind at the end of the first circuit. Baker went very high on lap #2 moving Wollenhaupt to second, Bill Woehler’s 2B to third and Dowty remained in fourth. Roy Armstrong jumped his 6R past both Dowty and Woehler on lap 3. Josh Kennell moved his 6A to fourth on lap #5 and he and Woehler swapped that spot several times over the next few laps. Armstrong moved up to second on lap 10 and Kennell passed Wollenhaupt for 3rd the next lap before getting past Armstrong for second with 7 circuits left but lost the spot back to Armstrong 2 laps later. The last position change in the top four came with just 3 to go as Woehler moved back into fourth.

“Happy Mothers Day to all of the moms out there, and especially to my wife!!” was Macku’s first comment. He continued by saying “It was great to get the win after breaking 2 weeks ago. I want to thank Tom Marsh for putting me in his car again”. He concluded the interview by stating “I want to say hi to my 5-month old daughter Skyler and to send our condolences out to Jim Sasse’s family. He was an important part of local racing, and we all miss him an awful lot”. Macku’s sponsors include Skylimit Remodeling, Orion Racing, AAMCO Transmissions, Speedy Steve’s, The Shop Inc. and B & B Lawn Service.

The next feature was for the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds. Dustin Andersen’s 8A, the 86 of Justin Wulf, Chris Ableson in the 1X and Johnny Saathoff’s 96J were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Wulf passed Andersen on lap 2 but Justin Jurgens spun the 22J in turn 1 and the yellow lights were lit. Ableson got under Wulf on lap #6 to set up what was arguably the best A Main of the young season. Moving high and low, Ableson used everything in his bag of tricks, but couldn’t make the pass for the lead. Saathoff advanced to third with 10 to go and Dylan Smith also passed Wulf with just 7 circuits remaining and then took over the third spot 3 laps later. The final top four were Andersen, Ableson, Smith and Saathoff.

Anderson began the interview by saying “The track was good tonight, and starting first always helps. I thought I’d never get win #2 since I last won in 2009”. He finished by relating “Racing with Chris is always awesome. Running door to door is what I like! I have to thank Robby and Ryan for all of the hard work that makes racing like that possible for me”. Andersen’s sponsors include Nebraska’s Best, Construction Specialist and Razor Chassis.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts moved out for their A Main next. Tanner Schmitz’s 10, the 21T of Brandon Thornton, Gabe Barclay’s 41B and the 25R of Pete Rogers led the pack and the end of the first circuit. Barclay grabbed second on lap 2 and Kevin Fearing moved his 48 to fourth on lap 3. There was a huge pile-up in turn 4 the next time around with several cars, including Rogers, heading to the pits. That made the running order Schmitz, Barclay, Fearing and the 29 of Matt Moyer. Moyer moved past Fearing on the restart, took over second with 9 to go and took the lead the next time around as Chad Bassinger put the 4X into fourth. Bassinger advanced to third with 6 laps left and grabbed second with 3 left. Moyer took the win with Bassinger second, Schmitz third and Barclay fourth.

“It sure was nice to get a win again, because it’s been over a year. And it’s even better to have the Cavalier ahead of the Escorts because it wasn’t that way last year. All that I owe to Chad Nick and Brandon” Moyer said. Matt’s sponsors include General Siding and Kinnersley Grading.

The last A Feature was for the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Clint Benson led lap #1 in his #100 with Frank Sheridan’s 9, the 1B of Brandon Horton and Dan Satriano’s 95 rounding out the top 4. Thornton and Satriano both advanced past Sheridan on lap 2 as Mike Boston moved the 51 into fourth. Boston jumped to second on lap 3. The next time around Lacey Tuttle got the #50 into fourth. The first caution of the race came on lap 5 when Chase Weiler suffered a flat right rear tire on the 21W and stopped at the top of turn 4. Boston snagged the lead on the restart with Tuttle moving to third the next lap. 2 more circuits were in the books when Gregg Bolte put his 00 in the fourth spot. It took 3 more laps for Bolte to snag the third spot putting Satriano in fourth with 7 to go. The final slowing in the action came with 2 to go when Terry Richards got the #18 sideways but recovered. The inadvertent yellow was disregarded and Richards put back into the spot he had held. Satriano made the last position change in the top 4 when he overtook Bolte for third on the final lap.

“I was really skeptical about this class last year when it was announced, I’ll admit. But when the owner of Woods Performance called me and asked if I’d like to run a 305 I started looking into it. After checking it all out I called and told him ‘I’m in!’” Boston stated. He continued with “It’s a great starter class and I think all of the drivers who are new to the class are doing great for having no experience in a sprint; there haven’t been any big wrecks. We might be going a little bit slower, but it’s still fast and I’m enjoying it”. Mike’s sponsors include Moock Trucking, Johnson Farms and Zoz Farms.
