Armed Forces Night victories to Schwartz, Armstrong, Andersen, Bassinger and Benson
Armed Forces Night, presented by Miller High Life saw a large crowd turn out to honor those who serve and have served our great country. The weather was beautiful, the racers were anxious to show their stuff and the track was prepped to make the racing fantastic.
There were no significant instances in the preliminary action.
The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature saw Rusty Montagne’s T1 out front of lap 1 followed by Kevin Anderson in the 22K, Gary Joens’ 68J and Bob Ruisinger in the 7. Nathan Kobus spun his #15 in turn 4 on lap 4 to slow the action. Shawn Harker moved the #40 past Ruisinger on the restart to take fourth and then got around Joens the next time around. The next circuit saw Derek Hall loop the 44D in turn four. That made the top 4 Montagne, Anderson, Harker and Joens. When the racing resumed Harker spun to a stop in turn 1, moving Laini Schwartz’s 18 into the fourth position. Schwartz wasted little time, jumping to second on the restart, and then taking over the lead on lap 12. Joey Danley cracked the top four with 6 laps left, moving to third 2 laps later in the 14. The final position change of the race came with 2 circuits left as the 25B of Benji Legg took over fourth. Schwartz held on for the victory, Montagne was second, Danley third and Legg fourth.
“It was my third win, and it seems like it was a long time coming” said Schwartz. “The bottom of the track was the place to be in our race, and I love the bottom!” she continued. Lastly she related “Thanks to my Dad, Chad, Alan, Pork, John and Derek. They prepped this brand new 2013 GRT car for the win”. Laini’s sponsors include DTSI, RACCCE and Protech.
Garrett Bolander’s 98X, Justin Busboom in the 62, Rob Brown’s 42 and the 12 of Dan Noonan led the field of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A after lap #1. Brown, Mark McKinney in the 23 and passed the 69 of Brandon Stigge all Busboom on lap two. Josh Kennell spun his 6A at the top of turn 4 on lap 4 for a caution. Roy Armstrong jumped his 6R up to third on the restart, with Stigge regaining fourth 2 laps later. Armstrong took over second on lap 9. Busboom advanced back to fourth the next time around. Armstrong got past Bolander with just 5 laps left. The next time around Stigge stopped at the top of turns 3 & 4. At that time the top four were Armstrong, Bolander, Brown and Busboom. Busboom moved up to third with 3 left. The next circuit saw Brint Lemke take over fourth in his 26L. The final position change in the top four came on the final lap when Busboom passed Bolander to snag second.
Armstrong stated “It was great to finally win here at Eagle again. It’s been a year and a half I think. But, you expect that here. The competition is just as great as always”. He finished his interview by saying “I need to thank John for his help in the pits, and of course my son Adam for everything he does on my car”. Roy’s sponsors include B & D Motorsports and NEAPCO.
The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds then took to the track for the A Main. Justin Jurgens in the 22J, Justin Wulf’s 86, Dustin Andersen in the 8A and Chris Alcorn’s 3 were the first four to the flag stand on lap 1. Andersen passed Wulf on lap #3. The next round saw Alcorn also pass Wulf, but the caution lights were lit when one of the implement tires guarding the inside berm of turn 2 got knocked out onto the track. Alcorn again passed Wulf on lap 6, but again was set back as there was a caution for debris. Lap 8 saw Roger “Chevy” Hadan move his #4 into the third spot and he was followed by the 96J of Johnny Saathoff who grabbed fourth. Saathoff passed Hadan for third the next time around. Bob Zoubek got his 5S around Hadan on lap 12, but was put back when Jurgens spun in turn 4. Zoubek made the pass for fourth stick on the restart however. Saathoff moved up to second with just 8 to go. Zoubek spun to the infield the next circuit, moving Hadan back to fourth. With 3 laps remaining Doug Deterding’s 13 and Alcorn stopped in turn 4. Both Zoubek and Alcorn went to the pits. The running order at that time was Andersen, Saathoff, Tim Ward’s 4TW and Hadan. Shane Hiatt made the last change in the top 4 when he took the 21H past Hadan for fourth.
Andersen was elated when he said “Back to back is AWESOME! My crew really has this car on a roll. I just hope we can do it again next week”. Andersen’s sponsors include Nebraska’s Best, Construction Specialist and Razor Chassis.
The next Feature was for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts. Cole Kircheau in the 30K, Melissa Cronin in the 5M, Amanda Rhiley’s 51 and the 23 of Ole Olsen were the first four of lap one. Rhiley and Olsen both passed Cronin on lap 2 and Olsen move past Rhiley the next circuit. Chad Bassinger took the 4X past Cronin on lap 4. Sydney Yost’s 20 stopped in turn 4 on lap 6. Bassinger took over third on lap 7 and Matt Moyer followed him, putting the 29 into fourth. Olsen took over the top position on lap 8. Bassinger finally passed Kircheau with just 3 to go and made a last lap pass of Olsen for the win.
“I was tired of being beat by a Cavalier, so I brought my A game tonight” Bassinger stated. “I need to thank my family first. Also Nick, Matt, Brandon and Jeremy”. Bassinger’s sponsors include Higley Chiropractic, Kreifel Plumbing, Warehouse Antiques, Shipley Flooring and Landis Engine.
The Budweiser IMCA Sprints then came out to cap off the evening. The 73 of Lee Bowes, Nick Bryan’s 52, Clint Benson’s 100 and the 03 of Shayle Bade were out front at the end of the first circuit. Gregg Bolte vaulted up to 2nd in the 00 on lap two with Benson also passing Bryan to retain third. Matt Richards spun the 44 in turn 4 the next time around. Bade moved back to fourth briefly on lap 6, only to lose the spot to Mike Boston’s 51 that same lap. Richards spun out again on lap 7 to bring out the caution. Boston grabbed second the restart. Benson moved up to third on lap 8. The yellow lights were lit again the next time around when Terry Richards slowed dramatically on the front stretch in the 18. Boston, in his attempt to pass the leader had taken to the extreme high line on the track, but it bit him when he made contact with the barrier in turn 2 on lap 10 causing his right rear to go flat. The top four at that time were Bolte, Benson, Bowes and Bade. Bade got around Bowes on the restart and with 8 to go Benson snagged the lead and Eric Reichwaldt passed Bowes for fourth in his #13. Bade passed Bolte for second with 5 to go. Boston spun to a sideways stop at the top of turn 1 with 4 left and Dwight Carter’s 4U slammed into Boston’s front end to bring out the red flag. Neither driver was badly injured. The race went green, white, checkered to the end with Benson winning, Bade second, Bolte third and Reichwaldt in fourth.
When asked about his first sprint car win, Benson related “This was only my third night in a sprinter, and after taking second last week it’s really great! The track was really smooth this week, and I loved it”. He concluded his interview by stating “I’m really enjoying this class, and I know that with more seat time it will only get better”. Clint’s sponsors include J & T Auto Body and MB Motorsports.
