10 A Feature Victories were claimed at Eagle Raceway at July 24th’s Fan with a Can Event

Although the heat index cleared 100 Saturday night, a good-sized crowd showed up to brave the temperatures at Eagle Raceway as Modern Real Estate and Empire Fencing and Netting presented Fan With A Can night. Double features were run since the previous week’s were interrupted by rain.

First were the make-up features.

The Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver sprint A’s first circuit saw Nate Weiler in the 4W out front followed by Jay Russell’s 76, the 100 of Clint Benson and Ryan King in the 93. Lap 11 saw Russell grab the lead. 2 laps later Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth making the top 4 Russell, Weiler, Benson and Danley.

I said it was rather a penthouse to the outhouse moment, winning this race and crashing out in the second feature on the second lap. Jay said “Hero to zero real quick! The track in the first feature was kind of narrow and it took me a little bit to get by Nate. Once I did though, I tried to set a pretty good pace. The track was about all that you could ask for, starting that early in the lineup. For as many cars as there were here, I thought the track was really good considering”. Jay’s sponsors include Klein Motors and RV, Fatcat Motorsports, Goodwin Tax Preparation, Ken Smith Auto Body, Deluxe Truck Stop, T&T Motorsports and Chuck’s Hair Center.

The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmods were up next. Lap 1 saw Roger Sluka in the 5S in first with Amber Cook’s 9, the 27W of Noah Williams and Trevor Baker’s 25!  Williams moved to second on lap 4 with Baker advancing to third. Lap 6 saw a caution as Tyler Nerud’s 5T came to a halt at the bottom of turn 1 and Williams also stopped. That made the top 4 Sluka, Baker, Cook and Shawn Harker’s 40. Harker passed Cook on the restart for third and Cole Wayman followed him, putting the 18W into fourth. There were just 2 laps to go when Baker moved to the lead. The last change in the top 4 came on the final circuit as Wayman moved up to third. Baker won, Sluka was second, Wayman third and Harker fourth.

I told him that it was a heck of a run for him. He responded “It was! Roger Sluka had a really, really good car. I was trying all kinds of things to get up to him, but I couldn’t seem to get by him. But I finally figured out the line that would work, used it and got the win”. Trevor’s sponsors include BBR, Shaw Race Cars, PM Manufacturing and BSB Manufacturing.

The next make-up A Main was for the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds. The top 4 after the initial lap were Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z, the 13J of Jared Deterding, Aaron Pella in the 3A and Chad Andersen’s 8A. Andersen passed both Deterding and Pella for second on lap 2 with Bob Zoubek putting the 5S third and Nate Thompson grabbing fourth in the 3T. A debris caution with 10 to go to slow the action. On the restart Andersen moved to the lead. Zoubek went to the infield the next lap but rejoined the action. That made the top 4 Andersen, Thompson, Shane Hiatt’s 21H and the 81 of Mike Densberger. Densberger passed Hiatt on the restart for third, but Hiatt got back past him making the final top 4 Andersen, Thompson, Hiatt and Densberger.

“That worked out pretty good. We figured that since we were starting off third row outside, we should get to the front fast and then just hold our own!”. Chad’s sponsors include Bobcat of Omaha, Utility Trenching, Flatfoot Trucking, Big Red Towing, Battery Systems, Sardeson Racing Engines, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decals, Razor Chassis and CPD Racing.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks rolled out next. Cole Krichau’s 30K, Albert Kiihne in the 85, Ryan Gilland’s 46 and the 18 of Tim LaPointe were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Tyler Jackson put the 13T into fourth on lap 4. Gilland passed Kiihne for second on lap 6. Jeff Dodd’s 55J stopped at the top of turn 1 the next time around for a caution. At that time, it was Gilland, Jackson, Dillon Richards in the 24R and Jeff Ware’s 83 the top 4 after Krichau dropped out of the race. Richards and Ware both passed Jackson on the restart. Ware moved to second the next lap as Richards went to the pits with a flat tire. That put Jackson third and Kiihne fourth. Gilland won followed by Ware, Jackson and Kiihne.

“It was a good race. We were patient at first and waited for a couple drivers to mess up and when they did, we took advantage of it. We got to the front and just stayed there”. Ryan’s sponsors include Ironwood Builders, Winlectric, Gilland Builders, Gilland Electric and Extreme Motorsports.

The final make-up feature was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Lap 1 saw the 7D of Daniel Holt lead lap 1 with Christine Holt’s 11, the 3AM of Dan Jackson and Gary Lafflin’s 9 close behind. Cade Richards put his 1R into fourth on lap 2. Bob Ruisinger’s 7 and the 6 of Trevor Baker stopped at the bottom of turn 4 on lap 6. Richards advanced to third on the restart but debris on the track forced another restart. Richards again took the third spot on the restart with the 25B of Eric Bartels grabbing fourth. Scott Brown passed Bartels the next time around putting the 2 into fourth. Richards moved up to second with 8 to go as Brown followed him into third and Shane Stutzman moved the 22S into fourth. Ruisinger and Holt spun in turn 2 with 7 circuits remaining.  Brown took second from Richards on the restart. Holt spun out in turns 1 & 2 after contact with Brown and Brown went to the pits. That made the top 4 Richards, Stutzman, Jackson and Ruisinger. The final pause in the action came with 2 to go as Lafflin spun at the bottom of turn 4. The top 4 were Richards, Stutzman, Jackson and Ruisinger.

“I was able to get up through the field and then I found the top there. I got it figured out that even though it wasn’t my kind of track because I don’t like running against a big cushion that it was slick enough the way that I like it and we were able to get it done”. Cade’s sponsors include Kosmos Racing, Filley Powder Coating, SCAT Cranks, CP Carillo, Qualcast, Bob Harris Enterprises, Billstein Shocks, Swift springs, J & K Trucking, McLaughlin Masonry, Thingstad Trucking, College View Auto Sales, RaceTech Info, Dynamic Drivelines, Richards Machine and ProCut Tires.

After preliminary heats and features it was time for this week’s features.

Nick Beckman led lap 1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A in the 22 followed by the 25B of Eric Bartels, John Meyer in the 29 and the 22S of Shane Stutzman. Bartels grabbed the lead on lap 2 as Stutzman moved to third and Bob Ruisinger put the 7 into fourth. Stutzman advanced to second the next lap with Cade Richards passing Ruisinger for fourth before taking the third spot after another circuit. Marty Steinbach put the 5ELI into fourth with 9 to go. Beckman passed Steinbach for fourth with 5 to go. The final top four were Stutzman, Bartels, Richards and Beckman. Stutzman left before being interviewed.

Roy Armstrong was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature with Albert Kiihne’s 85 second, the 41 of Adam Wasserman and Ryan Gilland’s 46 rounding out the top 4.  Jeff Ware spun the 83 at the bottom of turn 4 on lap 7 and the yellow flag flew. Kiihne looped it with 11 laps to go for another caution. That made the top 4 Armstrong, Wasserman, Gilland and Dillon Richards in the 24R. Dillon passed Gilland with 9 to go and got past Wasserman the next time around as Gilland held onto fourth. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Dillion Richards, Wasserman and Gilland. Armstrong had also departed before being interviewed.

Aaron Pella in the 3, Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z, the V22 of Rik Gropp and Nate Thompson’s 3T were the top 4 on lap 1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A Main. Justin Wulf spun the 86 in turns 3 & 4 on lap 2. Gropp took advantage of the restart, passing Ziegenbein for second. Thompson passed Ziegenbein on lap 4 for third. Shane Stewart grabbed the fourth spot with 14 to go as Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth. Hiatt jumped up to second the next circuit. Mike Densberger cracked the top 4 with 10 to go in the 81. Densberger moved to third with 7 to go and Chad Andersen put the 8A into fourth. Hiatt took the lead with 5 circuits remaining but Ziegenbein and Brandon Verbeek’s 4B spun in turns 3 & 4. Densberger and Andersen moved up a spot on the restart to third and fourth. A spun car in 3 & 4 slowed the action with 2 to go. On the restart Densberger took over the lead with Bob Zoubek putting the 5S in fourth before moving up to third the next circuit. Hiatt spun in 3 & 4 with 1 to go. The top 4 for the green/white/checkered finish were Densberger, Zoubek, Andersen and Gropp. There were no changes in the top 4 at the finish.

“It’s been too long coming. The final race of 2019 was my last win out here. We had a lot of seconds and thirds; top 4’s but just couldn’t seem to pick up the win until tonight. I think I got to fourth with about 10 laps to go and then got up to second with 6 to go. I knew that I had a pretty good car, and it was going to be a great race with Shane. We were running 2 different lines so it would be a good clean race. I don’t know if he spun out or broke something or what happened. It was an awesome race. We had a lot of cautions, and that gets on your nerves a little bit. I want to thank my Mom and Dad for all that they do. Also, my brother-in-law Matt. He texted me some set-up suggestions. We tried them and they made the car a rocket! My nieces and nephew. They’re always my biggest fans every week.  Most of all my fiancé Lindsay. Unfortunately, this was the first race that she missed all year. I do want to say one last thing to Roger. Please, don’t work the track anymore because that thing was PERFECT!!” Mike’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Gana Trucking and Excavating, Skytop Towers, Neeman Refuse, Cutting Corner, Kramer Bar and Grill and Alfred Ward and Son.

Bobby Draper’s 62, the 6SJ of Shawn Pospisil, James Hines in the 31R and the 11H of Nick Morris were out front on lap 1 of the Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmod finale. Steffen Oaks leaped into third on lap 2, moving Hines to fourth. Shawn Harker got past Hines the next lap to put the 40 into fourth. Hines stopped at the top of 1 for a caution. Oaks took second on the restart. Harker moved up to thud after another lap with Trevor Noonan putting the 66 into fourth. Harker took over second the next time around. Mary Hahn spun the 17 in turn 1 on lap 10. Trevor Baker jumped all the way up to third in the 25! With Noonan retaining fourth. There were just 9 circuits remaining when Harker took over the lead with Baker moving up to second the next lap and Noonan advancing to third. Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth with 6 to go. Noonan moved up to second with 2 circuits left making the final top 4 Harker, Noonan, Baker and Vrbka.

“The car ran pretty good tonight. The track was kind of hammer down in the make-up feature, but the second A we just were rocking around the bottom. I tried to keep my nose clean and do what I needed to, and we were victorious. First off, I want to thank my wife Amy for all that she does for me. Also, my family and my 2 sons. They are a huge part of my racing. Johnny at Jet Racing for building me such great cars. I want to thank Zach Woods at Speedway Motors for building the power plant and Kyle Vanover at Speedway Motors for my shock program”. Shawn’s sponsors include Tex Cattle, Patriot Crane and Rigging, BP Race Fuels, BFC Performance and Team Keene.

Jay Russell’s luck after winning the make-up feature earlier turned bad when his right rear caught the cushion in turn 3 on lap 1 of the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature. He was not severely hurt, but his car was too badly damaged to continue. When a lap was officially in the books Mark Pace led in the 57 with 5A of Andrew Jackson, Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 and Doug Lovegrove’s 55 in hot pursuit. Lovegrove leapt all the way up to second on lap 2 but lost the spot back to Grossenbacher the next circuit with Dan Nekolite moving to fourth in the 22D. Grossenbacher moved to the lead the next lap. Lovegrove regained second the next lap. Joey Danley made hard contact with the turn 3 wall on lap 7, causing the red lights to be lit in the corners. Clint Benson put the 100 into fourth on the restart before moving up to third on lap 13. Tyler Drueke took over fourth in the 12 with 7 to go and moved to third with 5 laps left. The final top 4 were Grossenbacher, Lovegrove, Drueke and Pace.

“My 2 DNF’s in the last 2 features sort of helped my starting position. It was nice starting in the third row instead of the sixth. I knew I had to get out early and go. I didn’t know where I was at or how close they were behind me, so I just kept on going. I got kind of caught behind a lapped car running the top and I didn’t have any brakes because we lost the left front rotor in the first feature. We had to change the whole front end and I knew I really didn’t have brakes, so it was kind of nerve-wracking running the cushion, so I had to be careful. Once I got behind that lapped car that was running my line, I sort of backed off a little. I had a perfect car, and it couldn’t have been any better, except for having some brakes”. Trevor’s sponsors include Rick Forbes Motorsports Stop ‘N Shop, True North Construction, Skytop Towers, WC’s South and Restore A Muscle Car and Jet Racing.
