Jackson, Bartels, Hall, Snyder & Saathoff are victorious at Jr Fan Club Night
By Greg Soukup
If you looked in the racing dictionary under ‘Perfect Night For Racing’ you would see it described as Junior Fan Club Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Colby Ridge and Duros Dent Works. Sunny skies and mid-80’s turned to a cloudless sky with temperatures dropping into the 70’s with a nice breeze. 111 cars filled the pits, running 15 heats, 2 B Features and 5 A Mains over the course of the evening.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.
The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car finale’s first lap saw Trevor Baker’s 6, the 21 of Eric Rempel, Eric Bartels in the 25B and the 16W of Jeff Whiting out front. Bartels moved up to second on lap 2. Shane Stutzman put the 22S into fourth on lap 5. Bartels grabbed the lead the next time around as Stutzman moved up to third with Rempel holding onto fourth. Stutzman took the second spot the next circuit, Rempel advanced to third with Whiting moving to fourth. Cade Richards passed Whiting the next lap to put the 1R into fourth and got past Rempel with 4 to go. The top 4 were Bartels, Stutzman, Richards and Rempel.
Bartels left before being interviewed.
Kyle Gannon led lap 1 of the A for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks, with Mike Hansen’s 94, the 13T of Tyler Jackson and Dave Carter in the 2C rounding out the top 4. Tim LaPointe spun the 18 out in turn 4 on lap 2 to slow the action. Jackson took over the lead on the restart with Carter second, Gannon third and Hansen fourth. Jeff Ware put his 83 into third on lap 5 with Hansen holding onto fourth. Scott Santee’s 42C stopped on the front stretch on lap 7 for a caution. Ware headed to the pits but came back to rejoin the action. At that time, it was Jackson, Carter, Hansen and the 10 of Brad Schreiner the top 4. Roy Armstrong passed Schreiner a lap after the restart, putting the 6R into fourth. Carter slowed with 7 laps remaining and fell to fourth, allowing Hansen and Armstrong to move up. Schreiner passed Carter for fourth. Ware had gotten himself back through the field and got around Schreiner for fourth with 2 to go. The final top four were Jackson, Hansen, Armstrong and Ware.
Jackson also had left before being interviewed.
The Nebraska Lotter IMCA Modified Feature saw Terry Hurt in the 24T, Jaxon Saathoff’s 96, John Saathoff in the 96J and Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z the first four back to the flag stand. Jaxon Saathoff grabbed the lead on lap 2. Justin Wulf put the 86 into fourth on lap 8. Ziegenbein stopped at the top of turn 4 on lap 10 and the yellow lights came on in the corners. Wulf took advantage of the restart to move up to third. John Saathoff past Wulf for third with 9 to go but lost the spot back to Wulf the next circuit. With Jaxon Saathoff and Hurt battling tooth and nail it ended badly when Jaxon failed on a slide job with 7 to go and the cars got locked together. After they were extricated from each other it was Wulf, John Saathoff, Nate Thompson’s 3T and the 8A of Dustin Andersen. Clint Homan used the restart to pass Andersen for fourth. John Saathoff snagged the lead with just 4 to go. Mike Densberger passed Homan for fourth with 2 circuits remaining making the top 4 John Saathoff, Wulf, Thompson and Densberger.
This victory marked a milestone in John’s career as it was his 354th win in IMCA competition and his 450th overall. He said “I started racing here at Eagle Raceway in 1980, and I definitely call this my hometown track. The last couple of weeks we got the car going pretty good. I thought that Jaxon was going to get another win tonight and I was happy running third. But, a slide job gone bad that went bad for him and Terry Hurt, but I just turned up the wick a little bit. I wasn’t going to settle for second! The top was working good for me. I’m running a Speedway open engine which not very many people are doing here at Eagle. They build a heck of a motor. Kyle Vanouver has been building our Bilstein Shocks at Speedway. It just seems that everything worked out great for us tonight”. John’s other sponsors include Northeast Auto, Northeast Towing, Jet Racing, Penner Insurance, Brad Coordsen, Jerry from Independent Equipment and I-70 Auto Auction.
The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmods were up next. Derek Hall led the first circuit in the 44D followed by Mary Hahn’s 17, the 18 of Dion Kovar and Jacob Swanson in the 31S. Scott Bivens slowed on the back stretch in the S56 on lap 2 to slow the action and he headed to the pits. Gary Saathoff jumped up to third on lap 4 with Swanson holding on to fourth. Saathoff moved to second on lap 6 but lost the spot back to Kovar the next time around. Swanson got past Saathoff the next lap, but Saathoff regained the spot after 1 more lap was in the books. The final top 4 were Hall, Kovar, Saathoff and Swanson.
His victory was his first ever at Eagle Raceway. “It was definitely a long time coming. We started this deal in 2012 and didn’t know much about it. I’d worked on a couple of race cars. I’m just happy to be here and finally getting the win was awesome!!! I need to thank my family for sure. My Mom and Dad, my wife and daughter because I spend a lot of time in the shop and my crew guy Jared”. Derek’s sponsors include ABC Printing, Omaha Mail, Goldfuss Racing and Fabrication, Custom Countertops and Ben and Cassie.
The Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars were the final A Main of the evening and saw Dennis Engelhaupt’s 30, the 14 of Joey Danley, the 5 of Stu Snyder and Ryan King in the 93 out front of lap 1. The 91 of Adam Gullion stopped at the entrance to the pits on lap 3 for a caution. Snyder jumped up 2 spots on the restart with Danley second, Gene Ackland third and Engelhaupt fourth. Jason Danley in the 4X and Nate Weiler in the 4W battled back and forth to the checkers with Jason Danley taking the spot for good. Snyder held off everyone with the top 4 being Snyder, Joey Danley, Ackland and Jason Danley.
“It was a good run for sure. I told everybody as soon as soon as I got out of the car that it was the most patient and most boring I think I’ve ever been around here on the bottom. But it worked out. We got into lapped traffic, and I had to start searching because they were running the bottom too. So, I tried the top and it was pretty decent, but I thought I was doing better on the bottom. I thought that the top was just going to be too far around. It ended up paying off pretty good, running the top and the bottom. Hopefully, we’ll have something going into Nationals in a few weeks. At the start I was hoping that King and a couple of other guys would get excited going into turn one and drift up a little bit. I learned in the heat race not to let the car drift up there too far off the bottom because you get out of the moisture. You don’t have any momentum to get you across the slick back to some moisture on the back stretch. So, that taught me right there to bide your time and be super, super patient getting it in, getting through the center of the corner and then hammering it in the moisture coming off. That just worked super well. I really want to thank all of the people who back me and my racing. They’ve backed me for a long time now, and I keep trying to make them happy and make them proud of me; put the car where it’s supposed to be, make smart decisions and hopefully in a few weeks we’ll be standing on the front stretch with the really BIG check. Just winning the Nationals is something that we’ve been close at, but it seems like something always happens and we end up having to start at the back of the thing. We have to work our way up towards the front, getting top 5’s. It would be nice getting locked in on Friday with no issues and having a real shot at winning the thing on Sunday. That’s the plan and what we’re looking forward to. I can’t thank Meyers Racing Engines enough for giving us a heck of a motor, JR1 Chassis, Momentum Shocks, BullyBrandGear.com, Smith Repairs, Hozby Tire, Mister Yards and More and Simpson Racing Products for keeping me safe. A big thank you to the whole KRL/SLS Motorsports team. Roger, Bob, Katie, Allie my wife, Robin, Kellen, Big Tony and Kenny are always pitching in and making sure we keep this thing up front and always working hard at the shop”.
