Victories go to Grossenbacher, Richards, Harker, Saathoff & Jackson at Eagle Raceway’s High Bank Thunder
By Greg Soukup
If last week was the ‘Perfect night for racing’, then this Saturday at Eagle Raceway was even ‘Perfecter’!!! High Bank Thunder, presented by the Lincoln Stars and Coors Light saw a very large crowd in the stands thanks to temperatures in the 70’s and the promise of great racing followed by the annual School Bus Demo Derby!
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.
The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature’s first lap was led by the 6 of Trevor Baker with Bob Ruisinger’s 7, the 5B of Matt Boucher and Allen Zimmerman’s 83Z rounding out the top 5. Tim Horsham looped his #28 in turns 1 & 2 on lap 3 for a caution. Dan Jackson put the #3 into fourth on lap 4 but lost the spot to Shane Stutzman’s 22S the following lap before passing Boucher the next time around. Boucher and Stutzman made contact coming out of 4 the following circuit, taking both of them out of action. That put Cade Richards’ 1R in third and Jackson back into fourth. Horsham spun on the backstretch 1 lap after the restart. Richards moved up to second on the restart and Jackson followed him into third the next time around. Baker spun in turn 1 & 2 with 4 to go making the top 4 Richards, Jackson, Dylan Haney’s 12X and Ruisinger. Baker got back into fourth with 2 to go. Richards won with Jackson second, Haney third and Baker fourth.
Richards is the points leader not only at Eagle but holds the top spot in IMCA Rookie points and was in 5th overall for National points before tonight’s win. “I was just biding my time at the start. It got kind of crazy for awhile there for some reason in 3 & 4. I laid off for a lap or so because they were hitting each other, so I split them down the middle and got up to third. Then the top 2 got together and I moved to the lead. All I need is clean air out here because that’s what it takes to get a win. I’m just glad that we got through all of the wrecks and beating and banging because that’s what you need here at Eagle sometimes it’s just basically surviving. I wasn’t sure about Roger watering the track so much during intermission, but it came around. I’m not shocked at all because he really knows how to prep a track. It blew off pretty quickly and ended up really racy! I could run the bottom in 3 & 4 and through the middle towards the end. I moved up to the top to get the win, but you could run anywhere you wanted”. I told him that his mother probably had her hands over her eyes when he moved to the top the way he did because she gets nervous when he starts using the ‘Matt Richards’ line the way his father did and he said, “I’m sure”. Cade’s sponsors include Kosmos Racing, Filley Powder Coating, SCAT Cranks, CP Carillo, Qualcast, Bob Harris Enterprises, Billstein Shocks, Swift springs, J & K Trucking, McLaughlin Masonry, Thingstad Trucking, College View Auto Sales, RaceTech Info, Dynamic Drivelines, Richards Machine and ProCut Tires.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next. Roy Armstrong in the 6R and Jeff Ware’s 83 made contact on the first circuit causing Ware to go to the pits with a badly damaged front end, but Armstrong was able to continue. Tim LaPointe’s 18, the 39 of Khrysta Stransky, Jeff Watts in the 66 and Neil Pella’s 3N were the top 4 after a lap was officially in the books. Tyler Jackson joined the action on lap 3 when he put his 13T into fourth. Stransky made contact with Jackson on lap 5, sending her head-on into the front stretch wall and her car rolling over. That moved Cole Krichau into fourth in his 30K. Jackson passed Watts on lap 7 for second. Jackson got past LaPointe on lap 9 but Dillon Richards had spun in turns 1 & 2 for a caution. Jackson grabbed the lead again with 8 to go as Pella retook the fourth spot before advancing to third 2 laps later. Mike Hansen took his 94 into fourth the next time around and advanced to second after another circuit as Pella moved up to third. The final top 4 were Jackson, Pella, Hansen and LaPointe.
This was Jackson’s second victory on the year at Eagle, and in typical Tyler Jackson style, his interview was short and to the point. “I had cars get a little bit tight in front of me and that got me the lead. Once that happened it went really good to the finish”. Tyler’s sponsors include Horizon Spray Solutions, Conservative Car Sales, Richards Machine and Potts Tire Repair.
Jaxon Saathoff held the lead on the first lap in the #96 followed by Terry Hurt in the 24T, Brandon Verbeek’s 4B and Clint Homan in the 27. Homan passed Verbeek on lap 2 with Rik Gropp putting the V22 into fourth. Lap 3 saw a three-car pile-up in turns 3 & 4 with Aaron Pella’s 3A, Kyle Olberding in the 75 and Ryan Sample’s 97 involved. Lap 4 saw John Saathoff take fourth in the 96J. Homan passed Hurt on lap 6 for the second spot but the 33M of James Masonbrink had spun out in turns 1 & 2. Dustin Andersen took advantage of the restart to pass John Saathoff for fourth. The final change in the top 4 came with 3 to go as Homan advanced to second, making the final top 4 Jaxon Saathoff, Homan, Hurt and Andersen.
“I’ve had some good luck here the last few weeks after Dad talked me into going back to the set-up I ran last year. I got the win a couple weeks ago, then last week I started out on the front row and Adam kind of checked out but then we had a restart and I got up to second but the old man ended winning somehow. It was his 450th career win, so I’m really proud of him for that. This week I started front row again, didn’t have any bad restarts and kept it out front. The track was pretty gnarly tonight. The first part of the race I was sticking to the bottom because I knew that the top was going to be pretty rough. I was sticking to the bottom and middle the whole race until Homan showed me his nose. I tried to stay up top and leave him a lane and that ended up where I stayed for the rest of the race. Jaxon’s sponsors include Tom Lineweber at Lineweber Dirt Works, Bryan Clauson at Clauson and Sons, Kyle Vanover at Speedway Motors, Ricky Thornton and Jet Racing.
The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmod race rolled out next. Ahnna Schouten put the 0NA out front of the first lap with Rich Flock’s 88F, the 44D of Derek Hall and Gary Saathoff in the 96 close behind. Hall got past Flock on lap 2 but the yellow flag came out when 4 cars came to a tangled-up mess in turn 4. Hall and Saathoff both passed Flock on the restart to take second and third with Flock falling to fourth. Shawn Harker passed Flock the next circuit to put the 40 into fourth. Schouten spun out in 1 & 2 the next time around, moving Hall, Saathoff and Harker up one spot with the 31S of Jacob Swanson advancing to fourth. Harker advanced to second with 12 to go. There were 9 circuits remaining when Harker took over the top spot. Trevor Baker put the 25! Into fourth the next lap with Swanson moving to third the next time around. Tyler Nerud vaulted up to third in the 5T with Saathoff falling to fourth. Nerud moved up to second with 2 to go as Nerud again grabbed the fourth spot. At the checkers it was Harker, Nerud, Hall and Baker.
“I had a really good car tonight. I won my heat race to get into the feature, found a line where they weren’t and started to make up some ground. I got into the lead and never looked back!! The track had a good cushion up on the top, but if you hit it wrong it was like hitting a curb. If you hit it too hard with your right rear it would whip your front end over and if you hit it too hard with your right front it would turn the nose back down the track. There was plenty of moisture though, so you didn’t have to get up on it”. Shawn’s sponsors include Tex Cattle, Patriot Crane and Rigging, BP Race Fuels, BFC Performance and Team Keene.
Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 was first back to the flag stand on the initial circuit of the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car finale. Hot on his tail tank were the X of Nick Bryan, Adam Gullion’s 91 and the 57 of Mark Pace. Gullion passed Bryan on lap 2. Lap 3 saw Nate Weiler’s 4W and the 3G of Bill Garrow make heavy contact in turn 4. Both cars were unable to be repaired. Shon Pointer took over fourth in the 20P. Tyler Drueke got past Pointer after another lap to put the 12 into fourth and moved up to third with 8 to go. Joey Danley joined the fray on lap 14 to out the 14 into fourth. Drueke got up to second with 9 to go and set his sights on Grossenbacher. He kept closing the gap but ran out of laps. At the end it was Grossenbacher, Drueke, Gullion and Danley.
“We got a really good start there. Everybody was running below my usual line that I normally run, and I got a really good run. I was surprised myself when I had the lead coming out of 4 but I kept thinking to myself ‘I can’t screw this one up now’ but it’s kind of hard being out front without anybody to chase because you don’t know what line to run or how fast to go. I know I didn’t run a perfect race for sure, because I messed up a couple of corners. But I got the job done and kept the momentum rolling. I didn’t hear anyone coming, but I knew that somebody had to be. I had trouble getting by some lapped cars. I would screw up and the field would gain a little on me, but I finally got by and thought I was okay then. I didn’t know how close Tyler was, but I knew he was coming!”. Trevor’s sponsors include Rick Forbes Motorsports Stop ‘N Shop, True North Construction, Skytop Towers, WC’s South and Restore A Muscle Car and Jet Racing.
The candle on the night’s cake was the school bus demolition derby. Five racers took shot after shot at each other’s bus to the constant cheers, OOHS and AHHS of the crowd. The competitors were Mike Densberger, Nate Thompson, Jaxon Saathoff, Cole Wayman and Cade Richards. Densberger, Thompson and Saathoff were the first 3 out, leaving Richards and Wayman to battle it out for supremacy. In the end Wayman came out on top.
“It was fun for sure!! It was definitely a new experience for me, but it was really cool of Roger to let us do that. I want to thank all the fans for getting me voted in to drive. I got into his radiator and took it out and his bus was done”.
Next week is the season points finale as A1 Iron, Empire Fence, Casey’s General Store and Coors Light present the Eagle Shootout. The 50/50 raffle will benefit Wounded Warriors.
