Well, after last week’s Icebreaker Challenge was cancelled, this week’s Start Your Engines presented by A1 Iron and Empire Fence could have been deemed the Windbreaker Challenge. The strong southerly winds didn’t seem to keep many fans from showing up, however. Those who came saw 180 cars filling the pits and providing some really great racing all night.

There were no significant incidents in the preliminary racing.

The A Main for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars saw Cade Richards lead lap 1 in the 1R with Mike Nichols’ 63 second, Jeff Ware in the 83 third and Shane Stutzman holding fourth in the 22S. Lap 2 saw Stutzman jump up to second, then take the lead on lap 5. Kyle Vanover joined the lead pack on lap 6, moving to fourth. The final change in the top 4 came with 8 to go when Nichols passed Richards for second. The final top 4 were Stutzman, Nichols, Richards and Vanover.

Shane’s victory came from the 5th position on the starting grid. “It took me a few laps to get up front, but it wasn’t easy to hold the lead for a long time. It wasn’t too bad out there tonight if the wind would have just settled down”. Shane’s sponsors include Bob’s Service, Imperial Manufacturing, Goldfuss Racing and Fab, Nielsen Blasting, Jackson Fries Construction, Troyer Concrete, Morgan’s Lawn Service, Skytop Towers, Dirt Outlaws, B & D Racing and Jet Racing.

Adam Vrbka’s 7V, the 35 of Spencer Galaway, the 6A of Adam Armstrong and Gary Saathoff’s 96 were the first four back to the flag stand after lap 1 of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod Feature. Matt McAtee looped the 6M in turn 4 for a caution on lap 2. Tommy Etherton moved his 24T to fourth on lap 4. He then took over the third spot with 6 to go and Joe Feyen followed him into fourth. 2 laps later Tyler Nerud jumped up to third in the 5T after coming through the B Feature. With 2 lap left Steve Devitt looped the 11X in turn 4 for the final caution of the race. Etherton passed Nerud on the final circuit for third, making the final top 4 Vrbka, Galaway, Etherton and Nerud.

Due to the extreme conditions Vrbka left before being interviewed.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next up on the track. Dillon Richards led lap 1 in the 24R followed by Bredon Stigge in the 69S, Dave Carter’s 2C and the 13T of Tyler Jackson. Brint Lemke took over 4th in the 26L on lap 3. Lap 8 saw a huge 4-car pileup in turn 4 for a red flag. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkers with Richards winning, Stigge second, Carter third and Lemke fourth.

Richards also left before being interviewed.

Then it was time for the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds A Feature. Nate Thompson put the 3T out front of lap 1 with Rik Gropp’s V45, the 81 of Mike Densberger and John Saathoff’s 96J rounding out the top 4. Saathoff jumped up to second on lap 2. Bob Zoubek’s 5S spun in turn 1 on lap 3 for a caution. Saathoff used the restart to snag the lead, Jordan Grabouski made a big move on the next lap, moving up to third and putting Gropp back to fourth. The next time around there was a huge pileup at the top of turn 1 including 4 cars and the red flag flew. At that time, it was Saathoff, Thompson, Grabouski and Gropp the top 4. Grabouski moved up to second 1 lap after the restart as Shawn Harker put the 40 into fourth. Harker took over third with 9 to go. 3 laps later Chad Andersen grabbed the fourth spot. From there to the checkers Grabouski used every trick in the book but couldn’t pass Saathoff. The finish saw Saathoff with the win, Grabouski second Harker third and Andersen fourth.

John requested to come into my vehicle because of the cold and the fact that he’s an old man of 59. “It turned out to be a pretty good night! I started on the front row of the heat and won it, started second row in the feature and took the lead shortly after the start. When we were sitting there under the red, I heard that the 30 car was in third and I figured I had better change my line to see if I could pick it up and I pulled out the win. I couldn’t believe it. You know, I won the last race of the year and then come back to Eagle and win the first race of the year. I just turned 59, been racing for 43 years and I still can get a win. Thanks to my sponsors and others like Zach at Speedway we are still winning, Jaxxon and I can still get wins and get it done while still having fun”. The last race of the evening was for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. The first lap saw Tyler Drueke do a 360-degree spin in turn 1 but kept going. The inadvertent flag was taken back and a complete restart ensued. Joey Danley led lap 1 in the 14, Drueke held down second, Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into third and Jacob Dye’s 20D rounded out the top 4. Drueke passed Danley for the lead on lap 5 as Jason Danley passed Dye for fourth in his 4X. The next time around Grossenbacher moved past Joey Danley and took over the second spot with Dye regaining fourth. Dye slipped and had to go through the infield with 12 to go, allowing Mike Houseman Jr. to take fourth in the 4L. Through heavy lapped traffic the field tried to catch Drueke but could not. The final 4 were Drueke, Grossenbacher, Joey Danley and Houseman.

Tyler, like Saathoff had won the final race last year, capturing the crown in the IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car Nationals and followed it up with this win. I knew that with the track the way it was Joey was going to have the preferred line at the start. He kind of got out there a little way, so I had to get my car rotating right around the corner so that I could build a run on him. Once I did that, I just took my opportunity when it came. It was pretty cool winning the Nationals and then getting the win at the first race of the season. We need to keep working on the race car and keep it dialed in. Keep it right for how the racetrack is. Whoever does that the best ends up out front. But it’s not me, it’s my crew; I just guide the thing around. A special thanks to everyone who helps us out! Next Saturday is Salute to Blue, presented by Avid Realty and Rotellas. Front gates open at 5:15. Adult admission is $15, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.

Pit gates open at 3:30 with pit admission being $30. All 5 classes will be in action, including Twin Rivers Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, Avid Realty SportMods, Valentino’s Hobby Stocks & A1 Iron Stock Cars.
