Sobbing, Grabouski & Borgman celebrate wins at Topless Nationals
By Greg Soukup
Finally!!!! Local dirt track fans had a chance to see some racing Sunday as Leiting Motorsports presented the Topless Nationals at Eagle Raceway. A beautiful afternoon with temperatures in the mid-70’s greeted the teams and fans as they showed up at America’s Home Track. All three classes Late Models, the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds and Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods removed their roofs for the evening. This gave fans a rare opportunity to see the drivers doing their work in the cars as they battled on the high banks.
There were two serious incidents in the preliminary racing, both occurring at the initial laps of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod C Main. On the first attempt at a start Ray Harrington’s 70 ended upside down at the rear pit entrance and the red flag was displayed. On the restart the D38 of Michael Towle did a harrowing set of high-flying barrel rolls high in the air over turns 1 and 2. Neither driver was seriously injured but their rides were too badly damaged to continue.
The Late Model A Feature saw Jesse Sobbing in the 18S jump out to the lead on lap 1 followed by the 36 of Jim Johnson, Drew Baker in the 136 and Jake Bridge in the 83. Lap 3 saw Daniel Hoevet’s 53 stop on the front stretch with engine problems causing a caution. 1 lap after the restart Zach Zeitner jumped up to third in the 76, with Johnson falling to fourth. Zeitner moved up another spot the following circuit to second putting Baker in third with Johnson holding onto fourth. Lap 9 saw Brdige vault up to second with Zeitner third and Baker fourth. With 10 laps remaining Bridge smacked the armco surrounding turns 1 & 2 hard while Johnson made contact with the front stretch wall. Both cars went to the pits. That made the top 4 Sobbing, Zeitner, Baker and Johnson. On the restart Mike Collins put the #3 into third. Zeitner ended up dropping out with 7 to go, moving Kale Kosiski to fourth and Baker up to third. Collins passed Johnson for second with 4 to go but Johnson got back past him on the final circuit to regain second. From there to the finish the top 4 remained unchanged with Sobbing winning, Johnson second, Collins third and Kosiski fourth.
Sobbing started on the inside of row 2 and quickly got to the lead. He stated “I’ve raced a lot of cars a lot of places, but this is the very first time I raced in a topless race. It was really neat. I like sitting down in the car, feeling like you’re down underneath something. It feels so different without a roof over your head, almost like you’re sitting out in the middle of nowhere. I get the pleasure of running this car a few times during the year. Karl from All Makes Collision Center out of Council Bluffs Iowa has an extra car and they give me the opportunity to run it. Their son Jared is an up-and-coming racer and runs in the area and I’m sure that he will be here the next time the Late Models race here. They have some really great people working on the car and the pit crew is second to none. My wife and kids got to come along tonight, making the win extra special”. The car’s sponsors include All Makes Collision Center, Thrifty and Hertz.
The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods then came out for their A Main. Lance Borgman used his outside front row starting spot to put the 76 out front on lap 1 with Tyler Nerud’s 5T second, Ahnna Schouten in the 0AN third and Derek Hall rounding out the top 4 in the 44D. Lap 2 saw the 5D of Devyn Peterson stop coming out of turn 3 for a caution. Hall moved to third on lap 3. Lee Horky passed Schouten the next time around to put the 7 into fourth but lost the spot back to her after another lap. A restart following a caution on lap 10 saw Hall pass Nerud for second before being repassed by Hall the following circuit. One more lap was in the books when Horky advanced to third with Adam Armstrong taking the fourth spot in his 6A. Armstrong got past Horky with 5 to go for third. Adam Vrbka also passed Horky, this time with 3 to go moving the 7V to fourth. A big move on the final lap allowed Horky to move back to fourth. That made the top four Borgman, Nerud, Armstrong and Horky.
Lance said “I really don’t like starting on the front row! I would prefer to start in the second row to see where the leaders are running and figure out the track. When I did get the lead I knew that I just needed to mind my business and hit my marks. I did see Tyler’s shadow a few times in the corners, so I knew I had to buckle down to stay out front. I want to thank Dad and my pit crew for all they do for me”. Lance’s sponsors include Hergott Farms, Coordsen Farms and Warnke Tree Shearing.
The last race of the evening was the A Feature for the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds. Jeremy Mills was first back to the flag stand in the 10 with Chad Andersen’s 8C second, Ryan Jenkins’ 6 third and Jordan Grabouski fourth in his 30. Bob Zoubek’s 5S slowed on lap 2 and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Grabouski took advantage of the ensuing restart to move past Jenkins for third. Grabouski continued his march forward the following circuit, taking over second place from Andersen but the pass was negated when Mike Densberger looped the 81 in turns 3 & 4. Grabouski successfully passed Andersen on the restart. Jenkins passed Andersen on lap 8 to grab third. The 127 of Drew Janssen joined the top 4 on lap 10, taking over fourth. Rodney Stopak looped the number 1RS at the bottom of turn 4 on lap 12 causing another caution. He also spun out in the same corner on the restart and was sent to the pits. Janssen moved to fourth on the restart. Aaron Pella spun out the 3A with 13 to go at the top of turn 3. Grabouski finally got past Mills with 6 to go. Mills’ engine went up in smoke with 2 laps left and he retired from the race. The top 4 remained unchanged with Grabouski first, Jenkins second, Cole Wayman passed Janssen for third and Janssen fourth.
Jordan related “That’s not the way that I want to win, especially since Mills was running one of our hand-built cars. It was a lot of fun, running topless. It gives you a whole new perspective. Roger did his usual great job prepping the track. That’s another reason I love racing here at Eagle; we always have a great surface to compete on. My crew guys like Josh, Merle, Durham and Scooter give me a great car every time, making it possible for me to run up front”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Crate Engines and Integra Racing Shocks by CPD
