Sobbing, Richards, Danley, Stigge & Armstrong are the 60th Season Opener Winners

By Greg Soukup

It was a chilly day Saturday as A1 Iron and Empire Fence presented the 60th Season Opener at Eagle Raceway. Temperatures were around 50 at the start of the evening and a cold north wind greeted the sparse crowd who braved the elements. The fan count may have been down, but the car count was at 130. The track prep crew did their usual great job providing a great racing surface throughout the evening.

There were 3 serious incidents during the preliminary contests. In the third heat for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods the 26 of AJ Oaks made contact with another racer on the backstretch and ended up flipping just past the rear pit entrance. He was not seriously injured and was able to make sufficient repairs to compete in the B Feature. In the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car heat 1 Jake Galusha got loose and ended up flipping down the front stretch. In the same heat Nate Johnson’s 97 bicycled going into turn 1 and ended up rolling over. Neither of them were significantly injured but their cars were too badly damaged to continue.

In the A Main for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars Matt Boucher’s 5B and the 9 of Gary Laflin ended up spinning to a stop in turn 3 on the initial restart and the red lights were lit in the corners. On the complete restart Shane Stutzman’s 22S was first back to the flag stand followed by Nick Steier’s 8, the 7 of Bob Ruisinger and Dillon Richards in the 24R. Lap 2 saw Richards jump up to second with Ryan Harris putting the 49 into fourth. Harris spun in turn 2 the following lap causing a yellow. That moved Ruisinger back up to fourth. Lap 5 saw Nick Beckman pass Ruisinger to put the 22 into fourth. Richards got past Stutzman for the lead the next time around. A debris caution slowed the action with 10 laps to go. Another 2 laps were in the books when yet another debris caution occurred. Harris cracked the top 4 again on the restart and advanced to third the next circuit. Jeremy Bohlen looped the 10J in turn 2, bringing out the yellow flag. Beckman passed Harris on the restart but lost the spot back to him the following lap. The final top 4 were Richards, Stutzman, Steier and Harris.

This was Dillon’s first Eagle Raceway win in a stock car and came from the fourth starting spot. Dillon said “I can’t thank Jordan Grabouski and JGR enough. They give me a great car and I just drive it. I started fourth and I love starting outside so I wasn’t going to complain about that! We’ve been struggling a little bit trying to make the transition from hobby stock to the stock car. I just needed to get going and I should be good to go now. A big thanks also to my step-dad Wade, Buck and everybody else who works on the car”. Dillon’s sponsors include JGR, CPD Shocks, S&L Trenching and Fester’s Bait and Tackle.

Next was the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod feature. Dana Deeke was out front of lap 1 in the 36 with Derek Hall’s 44D, the 6A of Adam Armstrong and Bobby Draper’s 62 rounding out the top 4. Armstrong passed Hall on lap 2 for second. Lap 3 saw Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth place. Ryan Arbogast spun his #2 in turn 2 on lap 5 for a caution. Armstrong took advantage of the restart to move into first as Vrbka advanced to third. Vrbka managed to pass Deeke for second shortly thereafter with Deeke third and Hall fourth.

He related “I started third row inside which is a good spot. Normally if you’re higher in points you start around the sixth row. Especially here at Eagle where there’s 5 heat races just getting through your heat is really hard. It was a good run, I got up to the high side and was able to get around Deeke who was having a good run”. Adam’s sponsors include Theron Ahlman from Avid Realty, Jet Racing, Icon Pistons, S&L Trenching, Brookelyn’s Hair and Replacement and Tracy Motorsports.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks rolled out next for their main event. Jeff Watts in the 66, Tanner Dowty’s 7T, the 21H of Kyle Schamp and Tyler Jackson in the 13T were out front on lap 1. Jackson passed Schamp for third on lap 2. Brendon Stigge also passed Schamp the next time around, putting the 69S into fourth but lost the spot back to Schamp after another circuit. Schamp jumped up to second the following lap as John Martinez took over fourth in the 00J. Stigge passed both Jackson and Martinez to put the 69S into third place, moving Martinez to fourth. Stigge continued his march to the front, advancing to second with 10 laps left before taking the lead after another circuit. That same lap Schamp grabbed second, Martinez moved to third with Watts falling to fourth. Adam Wasserman moved around Watts the next time around to put the 41 into fourth. Martinez grabbed second with 6 laps to go. Schamp got back to fourth with 3 circuits remaining, making the top 4 Stigge, Martinez, Wasserman and Schamp.

This was Stigge’s initial victory at Eagle Raceway after starting fifth. He said “The track was a lot better than I had figured on, it being the first race of the regular season and with the weather. It had the normal feature in turn 1 which was a lot better tonight. You could get through it really well. I really enjoyed tonight! It’s always great to race here”. Stigge’s sponsors include Smitty, Coordsen Farms, Criner’s Corner, Sidetrack Bar and Grill, Wasserman Trucking and Schmidt’s Inc.”.

Jesse Sobbing was running John Saathoff’s 96J tonight and lead lap 1 in it. Nate Thompson’s 3T was second, Anthony Roth in the 60IV was third with Terry Hurt’s 24T fourth. Hurt passed Roth for third on lap 3 with Jordan Grabouski also getting past Roth for 4th in the 30 after another circuit. Grabouski moved up to third the next time around and  grabbed second on lap 8. There were 9 laps remaining when Cole Wayman’s 18W stopped at the top of turn 4. He headed to the pits with a flat right rear tire. Bob Zoubek cracked the top 4 with 7 to go, putting the 5S into fourth. The following circuit saw Dustin Andersen’s 8A stop in turn 2 for another caution. Zoubek got past Roth for third with 5 to go but lost the spot back to him the next time around. The final change in the top 4 came the following lap when Chad Andersen moved the 8C into fourth before advancing to third in the closing laps. The final top 4 were Sobbing, Grabouski, Chad Andersen and Roth.

Sobbing left before being interviewed. The car’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Northeast Auto, Penner Insurance and Speedway Racing Engines.

Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 was out front after 1 lap of the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car finale with Shayle Bade in 03 second, Jason Danley third in the 4X and Stu Snyder’s #5 fourth. Joey Danley passed Snyder on lap 2 in his 14, lost the spot back to Snyder on lap 3 before regaining the position on lap 4. 2 more laps were in the books when Jason Danley moved up to second. Bade spun out at the top of turns 1 & 2 on lap 8 to slow the action. At that time, it was Grossenbacher, Jason Danley, Joey Danley and Snyder. Joey Danley passed Jason Danley on the restart to take the second spot. Snyder also got past Jason Danley on lap 9 to grab third. Joey Danley moved past Grossenbacher on lap 11 to snag the lead. Snyder moved up to second with 10 to go  but the pass was negated by a debris caution. Brandon Bosma looped his #23 in turn 2 on the first attempt at a restart. When another lap was official Snyder had again taken the second spot from Grossenbacher. There were just 8 circuits left when Gunnar Pike put the 25 into fourth but lost the spot to Tyler Drueke’s 12 with 3 laps left. The final 4 were Joey Danley, Snyder, Grossenbacher and Drueke.

Joey is of course the 2022 Eagle Raceway track champion and continued showing his abilities during this race. Danley’s win came from the 8th spot on the starting grid. “I got a really good start, getting up to I think fourth in the first couple of laps and just picked them off one by one after that. I was really skeptical about the track at the beginning of the night. It looked really hard but it held up great and ended up nice and wide for the feature. I had a real blast in the A. I need to thank my sponsors; Empire Fencing, The Wave, My Salesman, Nissen Hardwood  Floors, Onyx Digital Group and High Performance Lubricants. Of course, I couldn’t do it at all without the people who are there for me every week. My Dad, Cole, Mark, Kyle and Terry”.
