Vanover, Pella, Gullion, Wayman & Feyen let the good times roll with wins at Eagle Raceway

Vanover, Pella, Gullion, Wayman & Feyen let the good times roll with wins at Eagle Raceway

By Greg Soukup

It was a typical spring Saturday night at Eagle Raceway Saturday evening with cool temperatures and a brisk wind. But that didn’t stop the good sized crowd from enjoying the action as H&M Trucking and Rotella’s presented Let The Good Times Roll with 136 cars in the pits.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing action.

The 21X of John Anderson stopped at the bottom of turn 2 on the first attempt at a start of the A Main for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, causing a complete restart. Neil Pella led the first official lap in the 3N with Bob Ruisinger’s 7 second, Gary Laflin’s 9 second and the 19 of Kyle Vanover fourth. Vanover jumped up to second on lap 2, putting Ruisinger in third and the 22 of Nick Beckman advancing to fourth. The 10J of Jeremy Bohlen stopped at the bottom of turns 1 & 2 on lap 6 for a caution. Beckman passed Ruisinger on the restart for third. Dillon Richards jumped the 24R up to third the next time around before taking over second place after another lap. Anderson joined the top 4 with 9 laps remaining. Bohlen again stopped the following lap, this time in turn 4. Anderson moved up to third on the restart. A final slowing of the action came with 3 to go as debris was found on the track. Dan Jackson took over the fourth spot in the 3. From there to the finish the top 4 remained unchanged with Vanover winning, Richards second, Anderson third and Jackson fourth.

Kyle started the feature in the 8th position. Kyle stated “I started out in survival mode for a little bit, but then everything kind of fell into place. We were able to pick it apart, get out there and get rolling and the yellows helped to keep the field backed up. Dillon really made it interesting there at the end, but we held on”. Kyle’s sponsors include Cadillac Race Cars by Big Johnson, Speedway Race Engines, Speedway Shocks, Green’s Plumbing and Heating, Anders Bruns Construction, Icon Pistons and Novotny Ag.

Next up was the finale for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. There was a huge pileup coming out of turn 4 on the initial start, causing the red lights to be lit in the corners. Joe Feyen put the 25X out front on the restart with Drake Bohlmeyer’s 24, the 22 of Matt Andrews and Breanna Pfansteil’s 33B rounding out the top 4. Adam Armstrong looped the 6A in turns 1 & 2 on lap 2 to slow the action. The restart saw the 8X of Justin Bell spin out in turns 3 & 4. A lap after the restart Steve Devitt spun out in 1 & 2 in the 11X. Andrews moved up to second on lap 6 but lost the spot back to Bohlmeyer the next time around. Adam Vrbka took over fourth the next lap in the 7V. Mason Richards’s racer went up in smoke, dropping to the infield the following lap. The yellow lights came on with 7 to go for debris on the track and then again with 6 to go, slowing the action. Andrews took over second place on the restart. Tyler Nerud’s 5T and the 31S of Jacob Swanson stopped at the entrance to turn 1 with 2 to go. Vrbka took advantage of the restart to advance to third making the final top 4 Feyen, Andrews, Vrbka and Bohlmeyer.

Joe said “I started out in fifth, but after the big wreck I got moved to the front row so that helped out. The car worked really good in turns 1 and 2. There was the feature in turn 1 but I missed it and there was a couple of them in 3 & 4 that I hit a couple of times. There was a ton of cautions, and that helped a lot, but I was really nervous about them. When you’re out front you just put it to the wood and hope that nobody gets around you. You’re not sure if you’re going too hard or not hard enough”. Joe’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Nick’s Lawn Care, DCI Construction, Club 11 and Top Quality Construction, Stone Cold Restorations, Tom and Wendy Shea, Fossler Machine and Fossler Family Trucking.

Neil Pella’s 3N, the 69 of Kenny Roberts, Ben Becher in the B4 and Brad Schreiner’s 10 were the top 4 after 1 circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Schreiner passed Becher for third on lap 4. The next lap saw Adam Wasserman also get by Becher to put the 41 into fourth. Wasserman moved up to third with 8 to go. Schreiner advanced to second with 6 to go. The next lap saw Roberts make contact with Wasserman at the bottom of turn 4, allowing Ryan Gilland to take fourth in the 46. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkers with the victory going to Pella. Schreiner, Roberts and Gilland rounded out the top 4.

Neil’s victory came from the outside pole position. Neil stated “I managed to lead all 20 laps. It was pretty slick, with the usual feature in turn 1, so you had to go above it or put 1 tire through it and hope it didn’t mess you up. There was some good tack coming off of the corners though. I need to send a big thank you out to Ryan Gilland. After last week’s engine mishap he lent me a motor”. Neil’s sponsors include Gilland Electric, Gilland Builders, JTR Logistics, Kuehl Trucking, Trade Center Automotive, Southwest Auto, , TCA Outdoor Power, Adams Repair, Fossler Family Trucking, Jet Racing and Extreme Motorsports.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A Main’s first circuit saw Cole Wayman’s 18W first, Shawn Harker second in the #40, Aaron Pella third in the 3A and Brandon Verbeek’s 4GB fourth. Verbeek passed Pella for third on lap 2 with Clint Homan also getting past Pella to put the 27 into fourth. Jaxon Saathoff moved past Homan for fourth in the 96 on lap 7.The 99W of Hunter Weber spun in turns 1 & 2 with 9 to go. Saathoff moved up to third on the restart. Mike Densberger looped the #81 in turn 1 the next time around for another caution. Anthony Roth moved up to fourth in the 60IV with 6 to go and took the third spot with 2 circuits remaining. The final top 4 were Wayman, Harker, Roth and Saathoff.

He said “I got to start on the front row tonight because of having to pull off the track last week, so that always helps. It was definitely a tricky track tonight. It was a super good night for us though. The track was top dominant. We had the car running super good for the feature. Thankfully, the car wasn’t too tight. Other than a couple of holes the track wasn’t bad at all, considering the rain we got and it being super windy today. Props to Roger because he did all that he could, giving us a decent track after doing his best”. I asked Cole when he had decided to also run a Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint and he replied “We had talked about it the last couple of years, but last year we decided that we needed to try and find ourselves the right deal and give it a shot to see how it goes. We did find a good deal and it ended up pretty good tonight for us. I want to send a big thank you to my Mom and Dad, all of my friends and family and everyone that helps support us”, Cole’s sponsors include Hertz Car Rental, Ashley Terry with Woods Brothers Realty, Uribe Refuse Services, Jet Racing Chassis, Baker Boys Racing Suspensions

Cole Wayman jumped out of his modified and into his #18W Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car, taking his place on the pole of the A Feature. He led lap #1 followed by Adam Gullion’s 91, the 14J of Josh Riggins, and Clint Benson in the #100. Benson passed Riggins for third on lap 2.Gene Ackland also got past Riggins, putting the 14G into fourth. There were 9 laps left when Benson passed Gullion for second, only to lose the spot back to him the following circuit. There were 5 to go when Tyler Drueke passed Ackland to move the #12 into fourth before advancing to third the next time around. Gullion also made a big move that lap to take the lead for good. Gullion took the win, Wayman was second, Drueke held third and Ackland was fourth after regaining the spot in the closing laps.

Adam said “It’s been a while; it’s been a minute. We struggled last year and I started to wonder if I was missing something, if something was wrong with the car, or maybe I was just washed up. Then I had someone tell me that I was washed up and I got really angry!! That’s when we went over and won the Front Row Challenge at Oskaloosa in Iowa. We really stumbled onto something the last half of last year, not just on the car but as a team. Usually in the wintertime we try to improve little things here and there, but not this year. We didn’t go down any rabbit holes, We left everything the way it was, took it apart and put it right back together the way it was. We left the shock package the way it was, the motors the same. That makes it a lot easier on me to drive it, We’re really solid right now; not just with my stuff but with Ryan Kitchen’s stuff even with the motor issue I had last week; Ryan also had a good night tonight and I think it was better than it showed. We’re building on a lot of really solid stuff right now. I didn’t get quite a good enough start in the A and Cole surprised me a little bit in 1 and 2. I thought he was going to do a slide job and I should have kept my foot in it on the top, but I went to the bottom and followed him for a little bit. I thought I could throw a bomb on him in 3 and 4 but he went motoring right by me. I thought “OKAY! Cole came to play!!! Here we go! I’m going to just settle in and let the race come to me and let the car come to me”. He was really, really good early and I was hoping that he would fall off a little more. Late in the race, about midway to three quarters of the way through the race I found a line in 3 and 4 that was a lot better than the one he had been running. We were fairly equal in 1 and 2 but in 3 and 4. I stumbled onto something that made all of the difference for us in the race. I don’t know if he was getting tired or if his car was going away but you could tell that he was struggling a little bit because he wasn’t able to dispose of lapped cars. I saw the 5 to go and I really buckled down and started going harder than I had the first 20 laps. I got to him with a few to go and got a pretty good run on him down the front stretch. I decided that now was the time and threw a pretty good slide job on him, making sure that I could get to the cushion really quickly so that he didn’t have the opportunity to get back by me. I didn’t want to hit him and take him out, but I knew that if we came out of 2 really close or side by side that I could beat him to the cushion in 3 and have a good shot at the win. I was able to do that and from there to the finish I could check out a little bit for the win. It was just a solid night for us. We were able to keep our nose clean in the heat race, capitalizing on that. It helped us to start up front, but you’ve got to really take advantage of it”. Adam’s sponsors include Midwest Petroleum, Precise Roofing, Speedway Engines, Speedway Shocks, AL Driveline, Ultrashield Racing Products, Simpson Racing Products, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Swirlfire Screen Printing, 91 Bar Service, 91 Trucking, Big Pickle Trucking and Brenning Painting.
