Jackson, Densberger, Richards, Beckman & Boston win at Disco Fever

Jackson, Densberger, Richards, Beckman & Boston win at Disco Fever

It was Disco Fever Night at Eagle Raceway Saturday, presented by Speedway Motors and Southeast Community College as we threw it back to the 70’s. It also ended as a night of ‘Not the usual winners’. For the most part, it was a normal race night at America’s Home Track. A huge crowd filled the stands in anticipation of great racing with the fantastic fireworks show that was pushed back a week due to a lot of rain starting the week before. Other than the winners, the other thing that was out of the ordinary for a July night was that it wasn’t a scorcher; in fact, it turned out to be quite chilly by the time the A Features concluded. At intermission, the younger fans got to participate in the annual Color Run.

Despite some beatin’ and bangin’ throughout the preliminary action there were no serious incidents until the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver A Main.

A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars were up first for their finale. Lap 1 saw Dylan Haney’s 12X out front followed by Bob Ruisinger in the 7, Gary Laflin’s 9 and the 22 of Nick Beckman. Laflin passed Ruisinger for second on lap 2. Beckman got very loose the next time around but got lucky when the 5B of Matt Boucher stopped in turn 4 and Beckman retained fourth. Lap 4 saw Laflin get past Haney for the top spot and Beckman moved up to third. Marty Steinbach passed Ruisinger on lap 7 to put the 5ELI into fourth place but the pass was negated when Jerod Bussen looped the 71JJ in turn 2 as Travis Peterson’s 17TK stopped in the infield. 1 lap after the restart Beckman moved up to second as Steinbach followed him to take third the next lap, putting Haney in fourth. John Meyer cracked the top 4 with 9 to go in the 29. Bussen again spun out with 6 circuits remaining, this time in turn 1. There were just 3 laps left when Laflin suffered a flat tire and slowed. The ensuing jumble ended up with Beckman in the lead,  Steinbach second, Dillon Richards third in the 24R and Dan Jackson’s 3 in fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged through the last few laps with Beckman, Steinbach, Richards and Jackson the top 4.

Nick was just the first of the winners who had been awhile since they visited victory lane, and I kidded him about it. “Yeah, it’s been a long time coming, I can’t lie about that. We’ve had a lot of bad luck; we’ve had some good luck. We’ve been able to hang with them, we just haven’t been able to actually do it. I really feel bad for Gary Laflin because I think that was his race to win. He popped a tire and I was able to capitalize on it. I need to say thanks to a lot of people. First and foremost, my old lady. If it wasn’t for her I don’t know if we’d even be doing this anymore. We race Friday with all of the kids and then we come out here so I can race on Saturday. Also, Dave and Julie, the neighbors, Ron Fox Motorsports and the Havelock Hoodlums for helping me put everything together and my son. He’s actually starting to want to wrench on the car, so he’ll be racing one of these big ones soon”. Nick’s sponsors include Ace Electric, S&L Trenching, Performance 66, Otte Propane and Oil, Richards Machine and the Beverage Connection.

Next were the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Shawn Davis’ 77, the 18M of Mason Richards, Zachary Kucera in the 33K and Tyler Deeke’s 15 were the top 4 after the first lap. Noah Williams passed Deeke on lap 3 for fourth but Deeke spun in turn 2. Williams was sent to the rear of the field for rough driving. That made the top 4 Davis, Richards, Kucera and the 4Z of Zane Woodman. Adam Vrbka used the restart to get past Kucera for fourth, then moved up to third on lap 6. That same lap Richards grabbed the lead and Adam Armstrong put the 6A into fourth. Armstrong jumped all the way up to second the next time around, putting Davis in third with Vrbka holding down fourth. Vrbka passed Davis for third with 10 circuits remaining. The final change in the top 4 came 4 laps later when Woodman again moved up to the fourth spot. The final top 4 were Richards, Armstrong, Vrbka and Woodman.

This was Richards’ first win in this, his rookie season at Eagle Raceway and came after starting 8th. Given his racing lineage it should come as no surprise that he was in the winner’s circle. Long time fans will definitely remember both his father Terry Richards and his grandfather Terry Richards Sr. I asked him how it felt to get a win in his first season, to which he replied “It’s definitely special! Both my Dad and Grandfather have won here at Eagle, so being the third generation to win here just makes it all the more special; especially in my rookie year here. I couldn’t be happier! That last lap Armstrong put the pressure on me and I thought for a second that he was going to get me, but I’m glad that he didn’t. I want to thank my Dad for taking me to these races every week and my pit crew Jerry for coming with us as often as he can. To get this win with both of them here is really special”. Mason’s sponsors include Blackstone Builders, Leiting Motorsports, Riha Lawn Mechanix, Greder Law Office, C&L Automotive, Terry’s Tool Service and Dietz Wealth Management Group.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A’s first lap saw a caution as Clint Homan in the 27 and the 89B of Andrew Bowman came to a halt at the top of turn 1. Homan went off on the hook and Bowman went to the pits under his own power. Jeremy Baker led the first official lap in the 3J with Cole Wayman’s 18W, the 81 of Mike Densberger and Jared Deterding in the 13J close behind. Densberger vaulted up to the lead on lap 2  as Shawn Harker passed Deterding for fourth in the #40. Harker moved up to third the next time around. Lap 7 saw Anthony Roth take over the fourth position in his 60IV. With 12 to go Norm Ziegenbein spun the 1Z in turns 1 & 2. 2 laps later Chad Andersen passed Roth to put the 8C into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Densberger winning, Wayman second, Harker third and Andersen fourth.

This was Mike’s first win of the season. He walked up to me and said “Greg, it’s been a long time. I don’t think I got a win out here last year so the year that I won the Championship was the last time I won out here. The car was really good all night. We tweaked something before the races even started because we saw how heavy the track was and the car was really, really good from the get-go! Really good in the heat and really good in the feature and we swept both. I want to thank my Mom and Dad. He had a big health scare a few weeks back but he’s doing good and he’s here tonight to see the win. That’s awesome! This win was for him. A big thank you to my wife who is here week in and week out to support me, my sister and brother-in-law and their kids, nephews and nieces, my other sister and brother-in-law and their kids. Also, Johnny at Jet Racing for giving us this hot rod; it’s been a really fast one”. Mike’s sponsors include Jet Racing, McDonalds, Gana Trucking & Excavating. SkyTop Towers, Kramer Bar and Grill, Kutting Corner, Nieman Refuse and Schultz Home Services.

Spencer Pavey III put the 32 out front on the first lap of The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. The 21H of Kyle Schamp. Tanner Dowty in the 7T and Kenny Roberts’ 69 rounded out the top 4. Tyler Jackson made a HUGE move on lap 3, vaulting his 13T all the way up to second. Pavey III and Schamp got together on the backstretch and collected Roberts the following circuit for a caution. Pavey III and Schamp both headed to the pits. At that time, the top 4 were Jackson, Dowty, the 10 of Brad Schreiner and John Martinez in the 00J. Roberts and the 53T of Trenton Dowty tangled and spun out on the backstretch on lap 5. Baker took advantage of the restart to advance to second with Martinez moving up to third. Martinez looped it on the backstretch but kept going. The inadvertent yellow flag allowed him to hold on to second with Tanner Dowty moving to third and Roy Armstrong to put the 6R into fourth place. Armstrong got past Tanner Dowty for third with 4 to go and advanced to second the next lap as Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth. Martinez, Armstrong and Carter made contact with 1 lap remaining, spinning both Armstrong and Carter out on the backstretch. Tanner Dowty could not get his racer to stop in time and he ended up slamming head on into the pileup. None of the drivers were seriously hurt but were unable to continue. That made the top 4 Jackson, Martinez, Brandon Fisher’s 25 and the 66G of Kyle Gannon. The green/white/checkered finish saw no change in the top 4 with Jackson winning, Martinez second, Fisher third and Gannon fourth.

Tyler was the most recent winner at Eagle, having snagged a victory back on August 27, 2022. He said “We just got the car back from the frame shop 2 days ago and we’ve been working on it non-stop for 2 days. The car isn’t perfect, but I was able to get it done tonight. The track had plenty of character all night with all of this rain. I have to thank Don Hall”. Tyler’s sponsors include Ace Electric, Central States Hydraulics and Central Body Shop.

Andrew Jackson took advantage of his pole position starting spot to put the 5A out front of the first lap of the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature. Hot on his push bumper were the 20 of Tim Hilfiker, Cole Wayman’s 18W and Alex Salzman’s 2A. Shon Pointer passed Salzman on lap 2 to put his 20P in fourth. Wayman slowed dramatically the next time around and headed to the pits. That allowed Jason Danley to advance to fourth in the 4X. On the restart there was a jumble for position, ending up with Tyler Drueke’s 12 and the 8B of Jake Galusha flipping near the pit entrance. Neither was seriously hurt but both cars went to the pits on the hook.  Mike Boston had been slowly working his way forward, taking over 4th place from Danley on lap 13 and moving up to third with 11 to go. Hilfiker passed Jackson for the lead 3 laps later. Boston continued his march to the front, taking over second place the next lap and grabbing the lead with 3 to go. From there to the checkers Boston extended his lead and took home the victory. Hilfiker was second, Pointer third and Jackson fourth.

The victory came from 10th on the starting grid. I asked Mike what the heck had gotten into him. He replied “I have no idea!! We’ve had some bad luck most of the year, mostly mechanical problems but we finally had a night that went decently for a change. We were pretty good. We kind of got bottled up in that little melee on the front stretch. Unfortunately, it took out some good cars. I think it may have started with me because the car in front of me got loose, and you can’t pass anybody until the cone.. I kind of checked up so that I wouldn’t run into him and then it started. I feel really bad about the torn up cars but there wasn’t anything that I could do”. I asked Mike if he was going to just win one race every year, to which he replied “These dang races get tougher every year! It doesn’t matter how old you are or how young you are, when you win a race here at Eagle Raceway you’ve earned the dang thing. Roger Hadan is always saying that we’ve got some of the best drivers in the nation. Winning a weekly race here is like winning a national race anywhere else. We’ve had several guys who have won the IMCA Racesaver Nationals so you know it’s tough. I want to thank my crew, especially Nick Bryan for all of the leg work that he’s put in this year and everybody else for their help every week. Also my girlfriend Amber that owns Boss Cleaning. Zach Woods for fantastic engines. I’ve been with him for 30 years, since he worked for Jay Eckley. I followed him when he started Wood Racing and now to Speedway Motors”. Mike’s sponsors include Eagle Motorsports LLC, Boss Cleaning, Speedway Motors Race Engines, Speedway Shocks, 93.7 The Ticket, Nebraska Auto Detail, Schulz Logistics, Smokin Meats BBQ Treats, Sarah Chadd at Remax Realty, Rock Hopper Brewing Company and Mike Melbye at the Finish Line.
