Pella, Homan, Bohlmeyer, Legg & Jensen conquer Jr. Fan Club Night

Pella, Homan, Bohlmeyer, Legg & Jensen conquer Jr. Fan Club Night

By Greg Soukup

Buckets of Candy Night-Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Mammoth Station, Avid Realty and S&L Trenching was held Saturday at Eagle Raceway. The very large crowd that flowed through the front gates were greeted by a fabulous day and evening with mid-80’s temperatures, a cloudless sky and a slight northerly breeze.

There were 3 serious incidents in the preliminary action. In fact, one of them occurred before the racing even got started. Gunnar Pike flipped the #25 Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver sprint in turn 3 during his hot lap session. His racer was towed to the pits where repairs were made, allowing him to return for his heat. Next, in Heat 3 for the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds, Tyler Harr got sideways going into turn 3. His right side tires dug in and he snap-barrel rolled several times into turn 4. His vehicle was too severely damaged to return.  Tyler’s dad, Tracy Harr ended up lending his car to Tyler for him to be able to compete in the B Feature and A Feature. Lastly, in the second heat for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars, Dan Jackson went very high coming out of turn 3 and ended up smacking the turn 4 wall and rolling over slowly. His car was damaged badly enough that he did not return. None of the three drivers were significantly injured.

Intermission saw a melee of young fans on the front stretch where the Sam’s Club Candy Dash was held. The entire front stretch was strewn with candy and the kids were unleashed to grab as much as they could.

The first A Feature of the night was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Tyler Jackson’s 13T, the 5B of Matt Boucher, John Meyer in the 29 and the 55X of Tim Drake were the top 4 at the end of lap 1. Lap 2 saw Jeremy Down leap all the way up to third in the 6 with Drake holding onto fourth. The yellow flag was thrown on lap 6 when the 5J of Jakob Boucher came to a halt at the bottom of turns 1 and 2. Arie Schouten joined the top 4 on lap 8 when he put the 99RE into fourth. He lost the spot back to Drake the next time around. Schouten again passed Drake with 10 laps to go to retake fourth. The following circuit saw Down do a 360 degree spin on the front stretch after contact with Schouten. That allowed Schouten to take over the third spot with Drake moving to fourth. The yellow lights were lit again with 6 laps left when Dana Deeke spun the #36 to a halt at the bottom of turn 3. On the restart Jackson and Matt Boucher made slight contact coming out of turn 4, causing Boucher to spin to the infield. Drake and Schouten were also caught up in the incident and also spun to the infield. That made the top 4 Jackson, Benji Legg in the 84, Nick Beckman’s 22 and Down. Down passed Beckman for third on the restart. Legg took the lead from Jackson the next time around as Beckman moved back to third. Austin Boucher grabbed the fourth spot after another circuit in the 5A. The final changes in the top 4 came on the final lap when Tommy Etherton put the 24T into third and Down held onto fourth. It was Legg winning, Jackson second, Etherton third and Down taking home fourth.

Benji said that he hadn’t won a race at Eagle since 2015. He stated “I won a lot of races in a sportmod here, and then quit racing after 2015. I came back in 2020 in this stock car when Johnny Saathoff and I hooked back up. I really haven’t raced the stock car up here that much but we had a really good run at the Icebreaker, finishing second. We had an off week down at Beatrice so that gave me some extra time so I thought I would come up here and try again. I knew it was going to be tough starting 11th but we got lucky and missed some wrecks. I got up to second and I feel really bad because I got in there way too hard and kind of rubbed up the 13T a little bit. But that got me the lead and they said I was pulling away after that. It was tough because I don’t race here much and we’re trying to figure out the setup. I can’t thank Johnny enough. I’ve raced for him a lot of years and we’ve had pretty good success. It’s a real joy racing for him” Benji’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Northeast Auto, Claussen and Sons and Hardin Farms.

Next up were the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. There was a big jumble on the first attempt at a start with Joe Feyen’s 25X receiving heavy damage, sending him to the pits. Breanna Pfansteil put the 33B out front of lap 1 of the restart with Aiden Floyd’s 7A second, the 11H of Nick Morris third and James Hines’ 31R fourth. Hines moved up to third on lap 2. Derek Hall made a huge jump up to third in the 44D the next circuit and took over second the following lap with Hines retaining third and Floyd holding onto fourth. Lap 4  saw Jacob Swanson put the 31 into third with Floyd in fourth. Mason Richards put the 18M into fourth the next lap. Lap 10 saw Drake Bohlmeyer put the #24 into fourth and advance to third the following circuit with Cole Wayman taking over fourth in the 18W. Bohlmeyer jumped up to second with 8 laps left and passed Pfansteil for the lead the next time around. Hall and Wayman both got past Pfansteil the following lap for second and third. Wayman advanced to second with 5 to go. Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth with 3 to go and moved up to third the next lap. Noah Williams cracked the top 4 with 2 laps remaining to put the 27W into fourth. At the checkers it was Bohlmeyer, Wayman, Vrbka and Williams.

Drake had started in twelfth on his way to just his second A Main victory at Eagle Raceway in the sportmods. He said “That felt pretty good! I fell back to somewhere around 18th at the start and said to myself ‘This ain’t gonna be good’. I just started picking them off one at a time. I didn’t even know that I won until after the race. Then I was like ‘Hell yeah!!’. I just started passing cars and I guess I won. I want to thank Taylor, my Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa Evert”. Drake’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Tomlinson Motorsports, Northeast Auto, Elliot Sasse Farms, City Auto Supply, NAPA, The Rail, Five Two Customs, Big Blue Rentals, Harden Farms and Nelson Tree Service.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A saw Clint Homan take off from third on the starting grid to put the #27 out front of lap 1 with the 33M of James Messenbrink second, Sean Manning’s X52 third and fourth going to Nate Thompson in the 3T. Dustin Andersen jumped the 8A up to third on lap 2 with Thompson holding onto fourth. There was a caution on lap 3 when Shawn Harker headed into the infield in the 40. Andersen moved to second on the restart but the pass was called back when Norm Ziegenbein spun in turn 4. The yellow lights came on in the corners again a lap after the restart for debris in turn 4. Andersen again moved to second on the restart with Mike Densberger getting past Thompson for fourth. Densberger wasn’t going to settle for fourth though, advancing to third the next lap and taking second from Andersen after 1 more lap. Scott Bivens joined the top 4 the next time around, putting the 21H into fourth. Chad Andersen passed Bivens with 2 to go, taking the fourth spot in his #8C but lost the spot back to him on the final lap. The final top 4 were Homan, Densberger, Dustin Andersen and Bivens.

Clint related “I think it’s been 2 years since we won a feature here. It was well overdue for sure! I started inside row 2, so we started towards the front. I was told that when I got the lead that I was checking out but we were in lapped traffic a lot. They were 2 wide or 3 wide so I made it 4 wide at times. Overall, we’re getting it figured out and getting this brand  new GRT car rolling. I want to dedicate this win to my Dad. I lost him in October and this is my first race season without him and my first win that he wasn’t here to see. It means a lot to me to get it done. I put a sticker on the front of my car for him just this week, so he was with me tonight”. Clint’s sponsors include Berkshire Hathaway with Julie Daugherty-Brown, PMD Sports, Pierce Family Racing, BW Ag, 5 Star Wood Frames, Behnke Lawn Care, NAPA Auto Parts, Homan’s Auto, GRT Race Cars and Speedway Shocks.

Cody Muth put the Z00M out front of the field on the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale with Brad Schreiner’s 10, the 3N of Neil Pella and Dan Markham’s 6 in hot pursuit. Schreiner and Pella both passed Muth on lap 3 for first and second with Adam Wasserman also putting the 41 into fourth. Pella snagged the lead the next lap with Wasserman moving up to third the following circuit and Muth retaining fourth. Tanner Dowty passed Muth the next time around to put the 7T in fourth. Ryan Gilland attempted to pass Dowty coming out of turn 4 on lap 10 but the 2 made contact and the 41 of Gilland went barrel rolling down the front stretch. He was not seriously injured, but his race car was done for the evening. Dowty, Muth and the 00J of John Martinez all headed to the pits. At that time, the top 4 were Pella, Schreiner, Wasserman and Markham. Wasserman managed to get past Schreiner with 10 to go. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Pella winning, Wasserman second, Schreiner third and Markham fourth.

Neil stated “I was trying to get to the front without having an issue with a wreck. I was kind of worried with the 2 front row starters so I was trying to be cautious until I got around them. Then it was just finding a line and getting out front and hopefully take off from there. Other than that, it was all a good race. It was fun seeing Adaam Wasserman beneath me because it’s always fun racing against him no matter where we are. It was cool to see him come in second behind me”. Neil’s sponsors include Gilland Electric, Gilland Builders, JTR Logistics, Kuehl Trucking, Trade Center Automotive, Southwest Auto, , TCA Outdoor Power, Adams Repair, Fossler Family Trucking, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, The Beverage Connection, Five Two Customs, and Shoneweis Trucking.

The final race of the evening was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. The first 4 back to the flag stand were Alex Salzman’s 2A, the 53L of Ty Ledger, Josh Riggins’ 14J and the 91 of Adam Gullion. Riggins grabbed the lead on lap 2 with Ledger also passing Salzman to grab the second position with Salzman and Gullion third and fourth. The next lap saw Ledger get very high in turn 4, come down and make contact with Gullion and end up spinning to a stop coming to the front stretch. That made the top 4 Riggins, Gullion, Tige Jensen in the 24 and the 77 of Bret Klabunde. Gullion passed Riggins on the restart for the lead only to lose it back to Riggins the following lap. Jensen passed Gullion for second after another circuit and grabbed the top spot on lap 8. Lap 11 saw Mike Boston move up to fourth in the 51. The final change in the top 4 came with 3 to go when Gullion advanced to second, making the top 4 Jensen, Gullion, Riggins and Boston.

Last week marked Tige’s return to competitive racing after his horrible accident at Junction Motor Speedway. I kiddingly asked if he thought he was his father, the Black Bandit back in the day to which he replied “Once in a while. I mean, it was his idea to get the car back going, so yeah! The last time I raced was back in 2013, so it’s been a while. It was great to get the old crew back together and it’s been a bonding time for all of us. It’s been a long time coming. The car was quick tonight. Toby Chapman helped us out tonight setting the car up and said to just rip the lip and that’d what we did. I just had to keep it on top. It was fun to race like that, but I’m out of shape. I need to get back to the gym or something. Last week I just wanted to finish because we had some steering issue so I was just putting around the bottom out of everyone’s way. But tonight, we let it all hang out. Big thanks to my Dad. This was his idea and he helped get everything together ”. Tige’s sponsors include Carpetland, Studio 48, Mahlco, Wolfgang Body Shop and Mark Burch Motorsports.
