Andersen, Danley, Wasserman, Cook & Jackson conquer the high banks of Eagle Raceway
By Greg Soukup
The scorching heat at Eagle Raceway Saturday night may have kept the crowd size down, but there were still 128 cars in the pits as Stumpy’s Custom Creations and A1 Iron presented Conquer the High Banks.
It was a rather nostalgic evening as the intermission entertainment was a frozen t-shirt contest and after the races concluded the annual Hillbilly Slip ‘N Slide was held in turns 1 and 2.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.
Dan Jackson took advantage of starting outside the front row of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car finale to lead lap 1 in the 45R with Nate Thompson’s 3T second, Jerod Bussen third in the 71JJ and the 51 of Mike Scheinost fourth as pole sitter Dylan Haney spun, going to the infield in the 12X. Bussen looped his 71JJ in turn 2 for a caution on lap 2, collecting Matt Boucher’s 5B and moving the 5A of Austin Boucher into fourth. Nathan Landauer got past Boucher on lap 3 to put the 11N into fourth. Landauer moved up to third on lap 9 and passed Thompson with 9 to go for second place. Eric Rempel moved up to fourth 2 laps later in the 21. Scheinost spun out in turns 3 and 4 the next time around after contact with the 99RE of Arie Schouten, bringing out the caution flag. Thompson headed to the pits under caution, making the top 4 Jackson, Landauer Rempel and Schouten. The restart saw Landauer running low and Jackson high as they were side by side at the flag stand. Schouten got past Rempel for third with 5 to go but gave the spot back the next time around. Three laps remained when Tommy Etherton put the 24T into fourth and moved up to third the following circuit. Tyler Jackson moved up to fourth on the final lap to make the top 4 Jackson, Landauer, Etherton and Tyler Jackson.
This wasn’t Dan’s first win at Eagle Raceway, but it was his first in quite a while. He said “I think I have to go back to the late 90’s here at Eagle Raceway in the limited Late Model Class on Friday nights when they had them. I haven’t won anywhere in a stock car since 2014. I wrecked my Cadillac race car at the Lucas Oil Late Model show a couple of weeks ago. We had just gotten this car when I traded a turnkey Super Late Model for it. This car is amazing! These DeVilbiss cars almost drive themselves. All you have to do is be willing to drive them. I’ve had a little bad luck with it though. Tonight, I won my heat race at half throttle because the carburetor would just flutter if I went more than that, so after I got lucky and won the heat race I tore it apart again, flushed everything out again and put in a new diaphragm and fuel accelerator. I didn’t even put new tires on the car because I wasn’t sure if the car was going to run or not. I want to thank Andy Mallory, my Crew Brad and my wife. She wasn’t here tonight”. Dan’s sponsors include A&M Contracting, Logan Supply and The Rock Place.
The A for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod saw Lauren Cook put the 9X out front, followed by the 413 of Beau Riffel, Josh Pfeifer’s 33J and Nick Morris in the 11H but Mason Richards spun the 18M in turn 4. A single file restart was called for, with the lap counted but Morris spun in turn 3 after contact with the 88F of Richard Flock. Flock went to the pits with damage to his left front. That moved the 13XL of PJ Conger up into the fourth spot. Pfeifer moved up to second on the restart with McClain Reed putting the #44 into fourth place. Reed advanced to third the following lap. Amber Cook spun her #9 into the infield coming out of turn 4 the next lap as did James Hines in the 31R for a caution. Cole Wayman moved up to fourth on the restart in the 18W. Reed passed Pfeifer for second place with 7 to go. Despite a furious battle for third through fifth the top 4 remained unchanged with Lauren Cook winning, Reed second, Pfeifer third and Wayman fourth.
This was Lauren’s very first win ever in her third year racing and she was all smiles as she stated “It does help starting on the front row. The track was really slick in 3 and 4 and really good in 1 and 2. I could get the car to turn and hit some good moisture but I was a little slow in 3 and 4 because it was so slick. I felt like I was going really slow like somebody should have been passing me, but they didn’t”. Lauren’s sponsors include Buxton Photography, Turn One Design, Spring Valley Homes, Dirt Drivers, RE Racing, Stumpy’s Custom Creations, SLMR and C&L Automotive.
Norm Ziegenbein put the 1Z out front on lap 1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified Feature with Jared Deterding second in the 13J, Chad Andersen’s 8C third and the 13T of Tyler Harr fourth. Andersen jumped to the lead on lap 2 as Nate Thompson put the 3T into fourth. Thompson moved up to third the next lap as Harr regained fourth. Harr passed Thompson for third the next time around and got past Ziegenbein for second the following lap with Mike Densberger putting the 81 into fourth place. Densberger then passed Thompson for second the next time around. Shawn Harker moved under and past Thompson for fourth with 9 circuits remaining. Densberger moved up to second with 6 laps left. Harker passed Harr for third with 3 to go and Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth the next lap. Andersen won by a half lap, Densberger was second, Harker third and Zoubek fourth.
I kidded Chad that he could at least make it look hard to win, to which he replied “Man, that was pretty good!! We’ve kind of struggled the past couple of weeks and I didn’t know what was going on. But we changed springs and put a bunch of new stuff on. Just normal maintenance stuff. Something just wasn’t right, so we changed all those things and the car was right back to where it should be. I think that the last 3 races we should have a pretty good car, knock on wood. If we can stay clean and stay out of trouble we should have a pretty fast hot rod! I was just kind of on go mode. Making sure that I hit my marks and hitting the right lines. We got into lapped traffic and anything can happen when you get into lapped traffic. I was watching those guys and making sure that they didn’t make a mistake, or that I didn’t make a mistake trying to watch them. I didn’t hear anybody, but you never know here at Eagle is little bit better than you and when you’re out front you’re kind of a sitting duck. I had a pretty good idea that my car was really good so I decided to ride the cushion around 3 and 4, hoping that we found something there”. Chad’s sponsors include Five Star Frameworks, Utility Trenching, Bobcat of Omaha, Countryside Contracting, Flatfoot Trucking, Logeman Carquest Automotive, Only Pro Decals, Paddy McGowens, Dinkers Bar and Grill, AFCO Shocks, Landrum Springs and Jerovitz Motorsports.
Tanner Dowty led the first circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature in the 7T with Khrysta Stransky’s 39, the 25 of Brandon Fisher and Kenny Roberts in the 69 rounding out the top 4. Roberts vaulted up to second on lap 3 with Adam Wasserman putting the 41 into fourth. Wasserman then passed Roberts for second the following lap. Dowty spun in turn 4 the next time around collecting Fisher. That made the top 4 Wasserman, Roberts, the 24R of Dillon Richards and Ben Becher in the B4. Richards got around Roberts for second the next lap. There were just 9 laps remaining when Colin Hein joined the fight, putting the 19H into fourth place. Matt Rotschafer spun out in turn 2 with 7 to go for a caution. Hein moved up to third with 5 to go but lost the spot back to Roberts the following circuit. Stransky and the 42C of Scott Santee spun out in turn 4 with 3 to go. From there to the checkers, it was a battle for first and second, as well as third and fourth. There was just 1 lap left when Hein again took over third. The top 4 were Wasserman grabbing the win, Richards second, Hein third and Roberts fourth.
This was Adam’s first victory of the 2024 racing season. He stated “At the start of the race there was a bunch of moisture on the bottom and I saw that. I had to make a couple of moves early on to get up to the front because once the moisture starts to go it gets greasy and hard to pass. With 8 to go Dillon got underneath me and luckily the caution came out. He showed me the bottom, so I started running the bottom in 1 and 2 and the top in 3 and 4. I just stayed out in front of him and it all worked out. I need to thank my Dad who comes up every week with us, my brother who helps keep tires on the car”. Adam’s sponsors include Black Diamond Exteriors, Warnke Tree Shearing, Dillon Frazier Racing, BA Wasserman Trucking, Miller Seeds, C&N Outdoors, Tilton Bar and Grill, Criner’s Corner Bar and Grill, Judd Martin and Hamilton Construction.
Bret Klabunde’s 77 made contact with the 1B of Brandon Horton on lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver A Feature, causing him to hit the backstretch wall, then catch the implement tire guarding the rear pit entrance and send him flipping. Mike Houseman’s 4L got caught up in Klabunde’s flip and likewise went for a nasty ride. Shayle Bade in the 03 got involved when her right rear was caught up in Houseman’s flip. Bade headed to the pits for repairs including both top and front wings, the front axle and other damage. Both Klabunde’s and Houseman’s rides were seriously damaged and went to the pits on the hook, but happily neither driver was seriously injured. Numerous crews from other teams gathered at the push off area to assist getting Bade back on the track and she managed to restart at the tail of the field. Cade Richards grabbed the lead on the restart in the 11B with the 12 of Troy Sanford second, Tige Jensen’s 24 third and Dusty Ballenger fourth in the 2D. Jensen moved to second on lap 2 when Sanford slipped and fell back to sixth with Jensen second, Ballenger third and Dan Nekolite fourth in the 22D. Nekolite went flipping through turns 1 and 2 on lap 11 after bicycling up onto the Armco wall, moving the 1B of Brandon Horton into fourth. Nekolite was not seriously injured. A lap after the restart Cody Ledger put the #47 into fourth and moved up to third the next time around. Another lap was in the books when Jason Danley advanced to fourth in the 4X before taking over third the following circuit moving Jensen back to fourth. Ledger passed Richards with 9 circuits left for the
lead with Danley following him into second the next lap. Danley passed Ledger for the top spot with just 2 to go and held on for the win. Ledger was second, Richards third and Ballenger fourth.
This was Jason’s second win this season after starting twelfth. He said “I got a good start and then I stayed on the bottom of 3 and 4 for too long because there was water down there after the red on the first lap. I lost about 4 or 5 spots, falling back to eighth or ninth. After the red came out again I was able to slowly pick them off one at a time. Once the rubber came in, if the 11R and 47 don’t slip up out of it one time then I don’t get by them. I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time”. Jason’s sponsors include Speedway Racing Engines, Speedway Shocks, Climatech Heating and Air, Neff Towing and Sunkist.
As hard as it may seem to be, there are just 3 nights of regular season competition left this year. Next Saturday is Work Hard, Play Hard Night at Eagle Raceway presented by Southeast Community College, Nebraska Septic and the Lincoln Stars.
Front gates open at 5 PM with adult admission being $35, youths 6-12 are $15 with children 5 and under free. Hot laps start at 5:30 with racing kicking off at 6:30 with racing at 6:30.
Pit gates open at 2:00 with pit passes costing $50.
In addition to the regular racing action, there will be Hooptie Hockey afterwards. You won’t want to miss that.
