Alley, Zoubek, Wayman, Wasserman & Jackson conquer Eagle Raceway

Alley, Zoubek, Wayman, Wasserman & Jackson conquer Eagle Raceway

By Greg Soukup

It seemed almost chilly Saturday night as Nebraska Septic, Southeast Community College and The Lincoln Stars presented Work Hard, Play Hard night at Eagle Raceway. Temperatures in the mid-70’s greeted the very large crowd that filled the grandstands in anticipation of a great night of racing.

I personally want to thank Roger Hadan and the whole Eagle Raceway staff for the fabulous job that they do every week. What other dirt track can pack the pits with 120 teams, throw the first green flag at 6:25, have a 15 minute intermission for track rework and see the final checkered flag thrown at 9:30??

After the races were done there was a battle of Hooptie Hockey on the front stretch to give everybody a little bonus action.

There was one very scary incident in the preliminary action, occurring in the first heat for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Robert Salts in the 10-4 slid up the track in turn 2, made contact with the 39 of Khrysta Stransky that got him sideways and sent him barrel rolling twice before coming to a halt on all 4 wheels. Salts was not seriously injured but the same could not be said for his car.

Nate Thompson led the first lap of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A Feature in the 3T with the 1C of Scott Carlson second, John Meyer’s 29 third and the 6 of Jeremy Down fourth. Meyer passed Carlson on lap 2 for second place but lost the spot back to him the next time around as Dan Jackson put the 45R into fourth. Jackson passed Meyer for third the following lap and moved up to second the following lap as Tommy Etherton put the 24T into the fourth position. Etherton then advanced to third the following circuit. Lap 8 saw Carlson move back up to fourth. Jackson grabbed the lead from Thompson with 7 to go. The final change in the top 4 came with 3 circuits remaining when Etherton passed Thompson for second, making the top 4 Jackson, Etherton, Thompson and Carlson.

Dan’s victory backed up his win last week at Eagle. I kidded Dan by saying “Now, you’re just showing off!”, to which he replied “It was a pretty good run. The car was great again. I started seventh and came right through there and just rode it. The track was beautiful! This year I can not say how awesome it is that the track is smooth. It was racy. In our A you could run the top and the bottom was almost as fast as the top. The track was just awesome! I can’t believe that after 10 years I managed to get 2 in a row. I want to thank my sponsors, my wife and my crew”. Dan’s sponsors include AM Contracting, The Rock Place, Woodhouse Ford, Platte River Concrete and Super C.

Next was the A Main for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. The lead on lap 1 went to the 7 of Shawn Davis, second to Beau Riffel’s 413, third was Breanna Pfanstiel in the 33B with fourth place being Justin Bell in the 8X. Zane Woodman passed Bell on lap 2 to put 73Z into fourth. Woodman then moved up to third and Pfanstiel advanced to second as Riffel fell back to fourth the next time around. Gary Saathoff got around Riffel on lap 5 to put the #96 into fourth. Lap 7 saw contact between Pfanstiel and Woodman, forcing Woodman and Pfanstiel to fall back and allowing Cole Wayman to vault all the way up to second with Adam Vrbka putting the 7V into third and fourth going to the 44 of McLain Reed. Wayman grabbed the lead the following lap. Vrbka got past Davis for second with 10 to go and Reed also passed Davis the next lap for third. 1 more circuit was in the books when Noah Williams moved around Davis to put the 27W into fourth. Wayman held on for the win with Vrbka second, Reed third and Williams fourth.

This marked Wayman’s fourth victory of the season at Eagle Raceway, coming from 12th on the starting grid. He said “Being high in the points inversion I started 12th with Adam right next to me in 11th. At the beginning I told myself ‘You might have to ride around in seventh or eighth place’ because I couldn’t go anywhere. There were cars bunched up right in front of me and there’s no point in taking yourself out. So, we just stayed patient and made the middle groove work in turns 3 and 4. It all worked out. I need to thank my Mom and Dad, Steve Devitt for all of his help, Steve Hatfield, my girlfriend and all my family and fans that support me”. Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer High Plains, Fox Automotive, Zoz Farms, Hertz Car Rental , Kings Auto Supply , Cherney Enterprises, LLC and Uribe Refuse.

Cameron Thompson’s 2T was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified main event, followed by the 75 of Kyle Olberding, Tyler Harr’s 21T and the 21H of Scott Bivens. Chad Andersen got past Bivens on lap 2 to put the 8C into fourth. Olberding snagged the lead on lap 4. Andersen passed Harr on lap 6 to move up to third. Harr regained the third spot the next lap and moved up to second on lap  9. Olberding slowed dramatically with 10 to go because of a flat right front tire. That made the top 4 Harr, Thompson, Andersen and the 5S of Bob Zoubek. Andersen got past Thompson for second the next lap with Zoubek following him into third the following circuit. Clint Homan cracked the top 4 with 6 circuits remaining. Andersen got past Harr for the lead with 5 to go and Zoubek also passed Harr the next lap to move up to second. Homan moved past Harr the next time around for third. Andersen was the first to the checkers but was put back 1 position for rough driving. That made the top 4 Zoubek, Andersen, Homan and Harr.

Bob stated “I actually finished second but Chad got put back one spot because of rough driving. Not the way that I like to win, but I’ll take them any way that I can. The track was very racy tonight. When Roger went out at intermission and knocked the cushion down and didn’t work the bottom I thought that he was crazy but I guess he actually knows what he’s doing. Thanks to my wife and kids for all of their support and for buying my tires for the car”. Bob’s sponsors include Mahloch Motorsports, Noonan Motorsports, Baker Boys Racing, Kohmetscher Roofing, Schweitzer Farms, Pracheil Farms and City Slickers Bar.

Cody Muth’s Z00M led the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A with Tanner Dowty’s 7T second, Ben Becher third in the B4 and Matt Rotschafer’s 14R fourth. Rotschafer passed Becher for third on lap 3 with Adam Wasserman also getting past Becher to put his #41 into fourth. Wasserman then passed Rotschafer for third the following lap. Colin Hein joined the top 4 the next time around, putting his 19H into fourth place. Wasserman advanced to the second position the following lap. Hein moved up to third with 9 to go as Dillon Richards put the 24R into fourth. Austin Bruhn brought out the red flag with 8 circuits remaining when he rolled the #55  after hitting the back stretch wall and then the implement tire guarding the rear pit entrance in turn 3. That turned him sideways and sent him rolling. He was not seriously injured. At that time, the top 4 were Muth, Wasserman, Hein and Richards. A lap after the restart the top 4 were three wide coming out of turn 4 with Wasserman taking the lead, Hein second, Richards third and Muth falling back to fourth. Richards got past Hein for second with 5 to go but Hein got the spot back two laps later and lost it back to Richards the following circuit. There was just 1 lap to go when Rotschafer looped it in turn 4, setting up a green/white/checkered finish. Richards eked out a half car length pass at the flag stand to make the top 4 Wasserman, Richards, Hein and Muth.

This marked Adam’s second consecutive visit to victory lane this year at Eagle Raceway. He related “I started a little far back in the field in the fifth row and didn’t really know what to expect. The car worked good the first lap the first place I put it. The seas kind of parted so I took advantage of it and got to the front. I just tried to keep my line and stay steady. The track was absolutely racy. There was a big cushion up top and plenty moisture down low to keep the finesse drivers in the race. It was kind of hammer down in three and four and nice and steady through one and two and it all worked out. I need to thank Chris Hamilton, my Dad and brother, my girlfriend Regan and everyone else that helps me out”. Adam’s sponsors include Black Diamond Exteriors, Warnke Tree Shearing, Dillon Frazier Racing, BA Wasserman Trucking, Miller Seeds, C&N Outdoors, Tilton Bar and Grill, Criner’s Corner Bar and Grill, Judd Martin and Hamilton Construction.

Billy Alley’s 7C, the 14J of Josh Riggins, Mike Boston’s 51 and the 14T of Tyler Hendrickson were the top 4 after 1 lap of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature. Jack Thomas passed Hendrickson on lap 2 to put the 63 into fourth and moved up to third the next lap. Lap 8 saw Adam Gullion’s 91 and the 47 of Cody Ledger make contact with Ledger parking his right it sideways near the pit entrance in turn 1. Gullion headed to the pits with a flat right rear tire but Ledger pushed off to rejoin the battle. Gullion also came back out to tag the rear of the field. Boston passed Thomas for third on the restart but Thomas got back by him the next lap. Hendrickson spun out in turns 1 and 2 on lap 10 for another caution. The restart saw Shayle Bade do a 360 degree spin and keep going but the caution flag flew to slow the action. A lap after that restart Cole Vanderheiden put the 15V into the fourth spot. Stu Snyder passed Vanderheiden for fourth the next lap in his #5. One more lap was in the books when Ledger spun again, this time in turn 4 and the yellow lights were lit in the corner. Snyder passed Thomas and Riggins on the restart to take over the second position with Riggins falling back to fourth. Vanderheiden again moved up to fourth the following lap but lost the spot to Gene Ackland’s #14G the next time around. Ackland advanced to third the next lap. Riggins passed Thomas with 9 circuits remaining to grab third. Thomas slowed dramatically with 8 to go, allowing  Jason Danley to take over the 4th spot. Hendrickson spun in turn 4 with 1 lap left and a green/white/checkered finish was set up. Alley pulled away from Snyder for the win, relinquishing Snyder to second, Ackland held on for third with Danley fourth.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Billy Alley, he was a fixture at Eagle Raceway and other tracks until his father passed away in 2020. Billy decided to step away from the sport he loved and just came back to Eagle last week, finishing 11th in the B Feature. But Saturday proved to be the triumphant return of ‘Rock and Roll’ Billy Alley. I’ve known Billy and his father Stewart for many, many years and seeing the smile on his face when I interviewed him is a memory I will hold dear forever. He said “It’s a tough deal out here, racing against the cars at Eagle Raceway. When I stepped away I never thought I would be back. I tried to figure out how many years I’ve been away from Eagle but I never thought  I was going to win a sprint car race again in my life, let alone here at Eagle Raceway. It’s a pretty proud moment for me. I’m happy and grateful that Toby Chapman drug me out and said, ‘Let’s go do it’. I think I fed the itch and we’ll get after it a little more next year”. I asked if he planned on sticking around the rest of the season and taking on the IMCA Racesaver Nationals, and he replied “I think so. I’m taking it one race at a time. There’s no plans, but Toby’s having fun I think and we haven’t torn much up yet so we’ll just keep going as it comes”. Billy’s sponsors include Buda Concrete and Toby Chapman Painting.

There are just 2 regular season race nights left this year. Next week is Buckets of Fun Night, presented by Mom’s Popcorn and Great Clips. It’s also Junior Fan Club Night and those fans 12 and under receive free admission. There also will be free race car rides for the kids at intermission.

Front gates open at 5:15 with hot laps starting at 5:30, Adult front gate admission is just $15.

Pit gates open at 3:00 with pit admission being $30.

All 5 classes will be competing, including  Nebraska Septic Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, Avid Realty SportMods, A1 Iron Stock Cars & Valentino’s Hobby Stocks.
