Andrews, Jackson, Benson, Grabouski & Andersen are victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Season Points Finale

There is a female deity that dirt track fans are all too familiar with that I refuse to glorify her by using her name. She took a REALLY good shot at cancelling The Final Countdown, presented by A1 Iron and Mammoth Station at Eagle Raceway Saturday evening. With a heavy shower right before race time and lighter rain and drizzle that continued off and on through the night, the track prep crew worked doggedly to get the racing surface back into shape. Nothing was going to keep the races from being run, with all but 1 points championship on the line. Finally, 2 hours late the racing kicked off.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.

The first A was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Gary Laflin led lap 1 in his #9 with the 25 of Austin West, Bob Ruisinger’s 7 and the 3T of Nate Thompson rounding out the top 4. Jordan Grabouski passed Thompson for fourth on lap 2. Nick Beckman looped the 22 at the top of turn 2 the next time around for a caution. Grabouski took advantage of the restart to jump up to second. Cade Richards cracked the top 4 after another circuit to put the 1R into fourth place before moving to third on lap 5. Kyle Vanover moved the 19 to fourth the following circuit as Grabouski took over the lead. Richards and Vanover both advanced 1 on lap 7 as Laflin fell to fourth. Vanover got past Richards for second with 6 laps left. 2 laps later Laflin pulled to the infield with steam coming from under the hood, allowing Thompson to regain fourth. The top 4 were Grabouski, Vanover, Richards and Thompson.

The victory gave Jordan another track points championship. As always, he was all smiles when I caught up with him. He said “It’s always great to win here at Eagle, but to get another championship is just fantastic!! I really had my doubts about getting the races in tonight, but as usual Roger kept at it and gave us one of the best tracks of the year. I got a great start and moved up quickly. When I finally got out front I just had to keep hitting my marks and do my best to hold them off. I can’t thank my crew enough for their hard work! If it wasn’t for them and my sponsors it never could have happened”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod main event saw Mike Scheinost lead the first circuit in the 51 with Shawn Hein’s 5H, the 77 of Shawn Davis and James Hines’ 31S the first four back to the flag stand. Lap 2 saw a caution for debris in turn 2. Davis passed Hein for second on the restart as Roger Sluka put the 5S into fourth. Lap 5 saw another caution for debris, this time in turn 3. Matt Andrews took over fourth place from Sluka on the restart , moved up to third 2 laps later and jumped into the lead with 10 to go. There were just 8 circuits remaining when Adam Vrbka’s 7V got over the right front tire of the 18 of Dion Kovar but kept going as a 3-car pileup consisting of Amber Cook’s 9, the 27W of Noah Williams and Hines in 3 and 4 caused the yellow flag to be displayed. Adam Armstrong put the 6A into fourth place with 6 to go. Drake Bohlmeyer spun the #24 at the top of turn 3 the next time around for yet another caution Hein looped it in turns 3 and 4 with 6 to go, collecting the 7V of Adam Vrbka, Kovar and Davis. That made the top 4 Andrews, Scheinost, Hein and Adam Armstrong’s 6A. Armstrong jumped up to second on the restart. One lap after the restart saw Bohlmeyer make contact with Dana Deeke in 3 and 4. Deeke kept going but Bohlmeyer spun out. There were no changes in the top 4 with Andrews winning, Armstrong second, Deeke third and Scheinost fourth.

Like Grabouski, Andrews’  third win on the season cemented his championship in the class. He stated “That was a good way to cap it off I think, especially after starting seventh row outside. I told myself before the race started that I was going to be patient, and then 2 laps in when the car was digging the way it was I said ‘Well, we already have it as far as I know, so I’m going for it!”. It just worked out for us. I usually don’t listen to myself anyway, and it either hurts or helps me. I’ll give Roger credit because I was sitting here while it was raining and I was NOT happy because we were staying here. But all in all, that’s probably the smoothest track we’ve had all year in my opinion. When anybody wins they always say, ‘That’s the best track I’ve seen’, but I truly think that was one of the good tracks. It somehow slickened off more that I thought it would. Actually, I was a little too free; but hey, it worked”. Matt’s sponsors include John Bonta Skytop Towers, Raymond Contracting,  Big Red Lawn Care, JM Billiards, All Pro, PBS Rentals and Strategic EMS.

Lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature was led by Don Hall Jr.’s 92, followed by the 20A of Dawson Possenecker, Ben Becher in the B4 and the 94 of Mike Hansen. Hansen vaulted up to second the next time around as Tyler Jackson put the 13T into third and Dillon Richards advanced to fourth in the 24R. Jackson passed Hall for the lead the following lap as Hall began to lost brakes and fell back with Hansen second, Michael Wade’s 12 third and Richards fourth. Lap 7 saw  Roy Armstrong’s 6R hit the implement tire on the berm of turn 2 for a caution. Tim Horsham spun out the #3 in turn 2 on lap 9, collecting the #6 of Dan Markham  and again the yellow lights were lit in the corners. On the restart Ryan Gilland’s 46 made contact with another racer in turn 1 and ended up spinning and eventually got stuck on the berm. Richards advanced to third with 10 to go and moved to second the next lap. He got extremely loose on the final circuit and fell back, allowing Wade to move to third with Neil Pella putting the 3N into fourth. Although not winning the race, Richards made enough points to he crowned the champion for 2022.

Tyler related “I kind of got shuffled back really quickly at the beginning and I knew I’d better get back up front quick, so I tried my best and it worked. The track had the normal Eagle character, but it was smooth. Roger did a hell of a job getting it back together after what he had to deal with. A big thanks go to Shawn Slezak for his help with the car”.

The initial circuit of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A main saw Brandon Verbeek’s 4B in the lead with Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 33M of James Mesenbrink and Dustin Andersen’s 8A close behind. Lap 2 saw a huge melee in turns 1 and 2 with Terry Hurt’s 24T the only one coming to a halt. Andersen moved to third on the restart as Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth. Andersen advanced to second on lap 5. The following circuit saw both Rik Gropp’s v45 and the 8C of Chad Anderson spin out in turn 4. Dustin Andersen moved to the lead on the restart with Pella taking second and Shawn Harker putting the #40 into fourth. Chad Andersen and Gropp both came to a halt a halt on the inside of the front stretch the following lap for yet another caution. Jordan Grabouski headed the 30 pit side with an unknown problem as did the #3T of Nate Thompson. Shawn Harker leapt into third on the restart and moved to second the next time around in the 40. 1 more lap was in the books when Mike Densberger moved into fourth in the 81. Bob Zoubek got past Densberger for fourth  with 9 to go and jumped up to second the next time around as Pella fell to fourth. Densberger took over third with 4 to go. The final top 4 were Dustin Andersen, Harker, Densberger and Zoubek. Although he dropped out mid-race, Jordan Grabouski picked up his second points championship of the year.

He said ”It was an elbows up kind of night. I had a little bit of  a carburetor problem and nan electrical issue and I just about gave away the race in turn 3 one time, but all in all it was a good race and a great track tonight. It was a little slick getting into the corners, but it was all hammer down getting out. Coming down here we were getting off of the interstate and I told myself there was no freaking way that we’re going to be racing! Only this track would break free and by golly, that’s what happened”. Dustin’s sponsors include Flatfoot Trucking, Legendscape, Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape, Razor Chassis, Neon Clean Bins and Bodies by Project Pat.

The Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars rolled out to complete the regular season racing for 2022. Clint Benson in the 100, the X of Nick Bryan, Toby Chapman’s 11 and Josh Riggins’ 14J led the field after 1 circuit was in the books. Riggins passed Bryan for third on lap 3 but slowed the next lap after nearly spinning and hitting the Armco barrier in 1 and 2, allowing Jake Bubak to move into fourth in the 74B. Bubak advanced to third on the restart with Adam Gullion taking the 91 into fourth. Bubak moved to second with 7 to go. There were 5 circuits remaining when Gunnar Pike’s 25G slowed in turn 4 for another caution. The final change in the top 4 came when Stu Snyder put the #5 into fourth making the top 4 Benson, Bubak, Chapman and Snyder.

I kidded Clint that this must be an alternate universe where he won twice in 1 season. He responded “We were really rolling tonight! There was grease on the bottom and you  had to drive it in just right and get through lapped traffic just as quickly as everyone else. That was the trick tonight. Having Jake Bubak right on your tail is a great motivating factor to not let up and keep on the gas!! I had that little scuffle with a rut last week and that made me go through the whole car and check everything out. Usually when we’re on, we’re pretty good”. Clint’s sponsors include Clint Benson Motorsports, Sundown Homes, Green Beans Coffee, Acme Auto and Fistful Of Bourbon.

Although this was the last regular season race, we aren’t done as beginning Thursday September 1st the world’s largest IMCA Racesaver race begins; the IMCA Sprint Car Racesaver Nationals, powered by Sunbelt Rentals. Thursday will be a practice night to allow the out of towners to get reacclimated with the high banks of America’s Home Track. Following that, will be qualifying races for the Precise Racing Products Race of Champions.

The front gates and pits will open at 5 PM with adult front gate admission being just $3 with those 12 and under free. A pit pass will cost just $15 for all ages.

Where else can you see sprint car drivers from all over the country hurtling around a 1/3-mile bullring, billed as the world’s fastest for just $3?? Nowhere but Eagle Raceway.
