Boston, Andersen, Armstrong, Schouten & Vanover celebrate Memorial Day weekend with Wins!
By Greg Soukup
Saturday’s Memorial Day Extravaganza, presented by Twin Rivers and Pepsi had some marked differences from the past few weeks. First of all, even though it was breezy the temperature was nicely into the 80’s probably resulting in the crowd being much larger. The track was in great shape, allowing 3-wide racing through the heats. After intermission, the prep crew worked their magic and made the surface even better.
There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary racing, both in the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. In the second heat, Doug Lovegrove’s 55 and the 4L of Mike Houseman made contact after a part broke on Lovegrove’s mount, sending both cars flipping down the front stretch. Both cars were damaged too severely to return to racing but neither driver was seriously injured. In the B Main, Tim Hilfiker flipped his #20 in turn 2. Again, the car was badly damaged, but Tim was not seriously injured.
Matt Boucher’s 5B led lap #1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A, followed by Matt Fralin in the 7P, Travis Patterson’s 17TK and the 2X of Hunter Wergin. Lap 2 saw a 5-car pileup on the front stretch and the yellow flag came out. The restart saw Kyle Vanover jump up to third in the 19 followed into fourth by the 22S of Shane Stutzman the next time around. Another5-car pileup happened on the front stretch the following circuit. Vanover moved to second on the restart with Stutzman third and Fralin fourth. Lap 10 saw Cade Richards put the 1R into third with Jordan Grabouski taking fourth in the 30. Stutzman jumped back up to third the next lap and Grabouski followed him into fourth. Vanover snagged the lead the following circuit with Richards passing Grabouski for fourth. Stutzman advanced to second with Grabouski again moving to fourth. Richards made a big move with 3 to go, vaulting up to third with Grabouski holding onto fourth. The final top 4 were Vanover, Stutzman, Richards and Grabouski.
Kyle stated “It was definitely a ‘let it all hang out’ kind of night. There were a couple of dips in the track, but there was a ton of moisture in it after all the rain. Our motor’s tongue was really hanging out, but it showed the kind of horsepower we have with this Speedway Racing engine. I need to thank everyone who helps out on the car; Trevor, Brandon and Angela who were all here tonight Also my kids who put up with my being away so much”. Kyle’s sponsors include Big John’s Race Cars, Speedway Race Engines, Speedway Shocks, Green’s Plumbing & Heating, Jordan Grabouski Racing, Salon Nuveau, AndenBruns Construction and Schlake Farms.
The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods rolled out next for their A Main. Noah Williams in the 27W, Steve Devitt’s 11X, Gary Saathoff in his 96 and the 25X of Joe Feyen were out front of the first lap. Saathoff passed Devitt for second on lap 2 with Arie Schouten putting the 99RE into fourth. Feyen grabbed the fourth spot back the next time around, Schouten leapt his mount up to second with 10 to go and took the lead for good with 5 circuits remaining, The final top 4 were Schouten, Williams, Saathoff and Feyen.
Schouten’s victory came from the 6th starting position. Arie related “The car was good! We just had to stick it on the bottom and be patient, plugging away little by little. We got around Gary, and Noah was next and I finally was able to work my way around him. That did take a while, but patience was key. The track had a lot of character, but I love a track like we had tonight. I know lots of people don’t, but it creates a lot of racing, forces a lot of mistakes and causes things to happen or not happen, depending on the situation. The track dried up in the heat races, but once Roger reworked the track the moisture started to come back up, and that’s when everything started to shape into my favor. I have to thank my Mom, my girlfriend Amber, Donald and Cooper and Mickey who was here tonight ”. Arie’s sponsors include C & H Construction, Drew’s United Roofing of Nebraska, Bodies by RE, Barry Racing Engines, Barry Race Chassis and Jervis Shock Service.
The initial lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale saw Kyle Gannon in the 66G, Kenny Roberts in the 69, Don Halls; 92 and Jeff Watts’ 66 the first four back to the flag stand. Hall passed both Roberts and Gannon for the lead on lap 2 with Roy Armstrong putting the 6R into fourth on lap 3. Armstrong wasted no time at all, jumping to second the next circuit. Lap 5 saw Mike Hansen move up to third on lap 5 with Tyler Jackson moving to fourth in the 13T. Dillon Richards passed Hansen on lap 9, putting the 24R into fourth and moved to third the next time around. The following circuit saw Richards advance to second. Jackson regained the third position with 7 to go. Richards headed to the pit with 3 to go with a flat right rear tire. From there to the checkers the top 4 remained unchanged with Armstrong winning, Jackson second, Brad Schreiner’s #10 third and Hansen fourth.
Roy was very excited over his win as he hasn’t been to victory lane at Eagle for a while. “It’s such a special night to win on Memorial Day weekend! Not just to win the feature but to remember all of those that we’ve lost, especially the veterans and those in the Armed Forces who fought for our freedom. It’s just awesome to win here. It’s been a while since I won up here, but we are only running one night a week. Beatrice cancelled last night so we headed up here tonight. That’s kind of how our schedule will be this year. We probably won’t be here every week, so we’ll just be hit and miss. It’s always great to win here with the great competition every week. I need to give a special thank you to my girlfriend Bonnie” he said. Roy’s sponsors include BA Motorsports, Mark and Kerry Wasserman, Scat Enterprises, Icon Pistons and Schmidt Machine.
Shawn Harker led the first lap of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified main event in his #40, followed by Dustin Andersen’s 8A, the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein and the 6 of Ryan Jenkins. Terry Hurt passed Jenkins on lap 2 to put the 24T into fourth. Bob Zoubek snagged fourth on lap 7 in the 5S, only to lose the spot to John Saathoff in his 96J the next time around. Saathoff advanced to third the next circuit. Jordan Grabouski put the 30 into fourth with 9 to go before advancing to third the next lap as Ziegenbein moved back into fourth. Aaron Pella looped the 3A in turn 3 with 6 laps to go. Andersen used the restart to grab the lead for good with Zoubek moving back to fourth on the last lap. The final top 4 were Andersen, Harker, Grabouski and Zoubek.
Dustin wanted to keep the interview short so he and his friends could celebrate. He said “It was a good night, an elbows up night. Just a good night of racing for us! On Memorial Day weekend I want to give a big shout out to all the service men and women for letting us do what we love. This win goes out to my old man who passed away in April. It’s a pretty emotional one. We got it done though, so I hope he’s up there smiling down on us. Hats off to Roger for everything he does for the track. Thanks to Jim, Pat and everyone else who helps us get around the track”. Dustin’s sponsors include Flatfoot Trucking, Nebraska’s Best and Legend Scapes.
The Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature’s first circuit saw Mike Boston’s 51 out front. Chase Weiler was second in the 0, Gene Ackland third in the 14G with Gunnar Pike’s 25 fourth. Clint Benson got past Pike on lap 3 to put the 100 into fourth. Lap 8 saw Toby Chapman get past Benson for fourth in the #11 and move up to third on lap 13. Josh Riggins took over the fourth position with 11 laps remaining in his 14J. The final position change in the top 4 came with 5 to go as Chapman snagged second. The top 4 were Boston, Chapman, Weiler and Riggins.
I told Mike that I had almost forgotten that he raced to which he replied “I’d probably do the same!! I know it’s been a while since we talked, with me taking last year off from racing. I started a different job, a different career with Speedway Motors building race cars, and we’re just getting back into it. We’re just running Eagle Raceway and maybe a few special events. I’m getting old enough where I’m going to be retiring here one of these days, I hope. Our car has been good every night out, but one week we broke 2 driveshafts! It’s bad enough to break one driveshaft a year, let alone two in one night! We had a power steering line that had just 5 shows on it that sprung a leak. We even had a header come off. In all the years I’ve been racing I’ve never had that happen!!!! We’ve just been having some bad luck, but that’s part of racing. Taking last year off really helped me learn to deal with that. Any racer will tell you that sometimes you lose but if you’re happy with losing you shouldn’t be out there on the track. I was disappointed early in the season, but I didn’t go home and kick the dog or whatever. I knew that we would come back because we’re fast enough. It’s what I wanted to do! We’re not racing for points; I just want to come out and win some races. First and foremost, I want to thank Zach Woods at Speedway Racing Engines. Not just for me, but he does an awesome job for the Racesaver teams. He bends over backwards to not miss a race and make sure he has the parts to fix your motor if you have a problem. He builds a ton of engines, but doesn’t just specialize in the Racesaver engines. He’s built Jack Dover’s 360 and 410 plus Tyler Drueke’s which won the IMCA Racesaver Nationals last year. My girlfriend owns Boss Cleaning and she supports me 110%. Also, my Dad who I wish could be here, but he’s in a retirement home and I sure wish he was here tonight. I need to thank my pit crew; my daughter Shelby, my son Jordan and Nick Bryan Without them I couldn’t do this”. Mike’s other sponsors include Moock Trucking, Johnson Farms and MTO Clean.
Next Saturday is ‘Schools Out for the Summer” night, presented by Southeast Community College and the Nebraska Lottery. There will be school bus races following the A Features.
