Driver Appreciation/Show Your Tattoo Night wins go to Legg, Langenbers, Saathoff, Haller and Boston
By Greg Soukup
A near-capacity crowd rolled through the gates for Ink Machine’s “Show your tattoo Night” sponsored by Miller and the Nebraska Lottery at Eagle Raceway Saturday night. Overcast skies and warm temperatures provided a great environment for the thousands of fans who made their first trek to “America’s Home Track”. The party atmosphere was in full swing the whole evening from the first heat to the final feature race. The racing provided a great show for one and all.
The only serious incident happened in the 2nd heat for the Rev Honey IMCA Modifieds when a tie-up in turns 1 and 2 ended up with Mike Densberger’s #81 rolling over completely. Densberger suffered no serious injuries, but his racer damaged too badly for repairs on the evening.
Shelly Anderson’s 5V led the pack after lap 1 of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A with Joey Danley in the 14, Kevin Jochum’s 90 and the 6 of Denny Berghahn Jr. next. Danley, Jochum and Berghahn all passed Anderson on lap 2 with Sean Manning moving the 52M past her the next lap. Gary Saathoff looped his #96 on lap 4 to bring out the yellow flag. Anderson retook 4th on lap 7, with Berghahn grabbing 2nd the next time around. Benji Legg moved his 25B into fourth on lap 10, and wasted no time passing both Jochum and Berghahn the next circuit. Berghahn jumped into the lead with 1 more lap in the books as Danley grabbed third. 2 more laps had been run when Legg took the lead for good. The top 4 were Legg, Berghahn, Danley and Marty Steinbach who advanced to fourth in the closing laps.
“We finally did it after 2 seconds this year. It’s always great to get that first win of the year” Legg said. Legg’s sponsors include Jet Racing, The Bus Stop, Coors Light, The End Zone and The Rail.
Next up were the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Mark Saathoff’s 97M, the 1J of Colby Langenbers and Derick Noonan in the 21 were the first 3 at the completion of the first lap. Lap 2 saw Chad Fegley’s 13F crack the top 4. Langenbers snared the lead on lap 4. Roy Armstrong vaulted up to third on lap 6 with Fegley also getting past Noonan. Armstrong spun on the next lap. At that time the top 4 were Langenbers, Saathoff, Fegley and Noonan. Defending points champion Nick Beckman passed Noonan after 2 more circuits, and despite furious competition among the leaders the running order remained the same until the checkers. Langenbers, Saathoff, Fegley and Beckman were the top 4.
This was Colby’s first win at Eagle in this, his 3rd year racing. Colby stated “It was fantastic getting the win. After I got out front in the first couple of laps I just tried to hold off everyone and watch to see who was coming. I backed off a little at the end, just trying to be smooth and steady and almost ended up getting passed”. Colby’s sponsors include Langenbers Farms, Dan Lau Farms, Boutique Express, Jaeger Seeds, Hoskins Motor and Ag Specialties.
The Rev Honey IMCA Modified Feature then came out onto the track. Clint Homan’ 27 was in the lead on lap #1 with Dan Nelson’s 94, the 8C of Chad Anderson and Doug Deterding in the 13 rounding out the top 4. Terry Richards jumped past both Deterding and Anderson the second lap and Anderson took the lead on the next circuit. Dustin Anderson looped the 8A the following lap and the yellow lights were lit. At that time the top 4 were Chad Anderson, Homan, Richards and Nelson. Homan dropped back 2 spots on lap 4 with Deterding again moving to fourth the next lap. Rik Gropp got his V45 past Deterding the next time around and grabbed third 2 laps later with Deterding holding fourth. Johnny Saathoff passed both Deterding and Gropp the next circuit, moving Gropp back to fourth. 3 more laps were in the books when Chris Abelson got the 1X into fourth. Saathoff took the lead after 1 more circuit. Three laps later the caution flag was brought out for Justin Wulf’s 86 which had spun on the back stretch. The top 4 at that time were Saathoff, Chad Anderson, Nelson and Abelson. Nelson and Abelson both got past Anderson on the restart. Abelson advanced another position the next lap. The last change in the top 4 came after another 3 circuits when Chris Alcorn got the #3 up to fourth. At the checkers it was Saathoff, Abelson, Nelson and Alcorn.
Saathoff left the grounds before he could be interviewed. I spoke to him before the A Mains began however, and he said “The track is getting nice and slick” to which I replied “Isn’t that the way you like it?”. He merely smiled and walked off. I would say I was correct. Saathoff’s sponsors include JR Motorsports, Jet Racing and 96KX.
The leaders on the first lap of the Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts were Tim Horsham’s #3, Brian Haller in the B32, Chad Bassinger’s 4X and the 00 of Barry Kinnersley. Bassinger moved around Haller for 2nd on lap 3 and Kyle Gannon got his 66G into fourth the next time around. Lap 7 saw Bassinger pass Horsham for the lead but he slowed coming off turn 4. Haller could not avoid him and ended up spinning him, collecting another racer. That put Horsham back at the point followed by Haller, Maynard Kinnersley in the 18 and Barry Kinnersley fourth. Matt Moyer moved his #29 into fourth on the restart lap and Haller snared the lead the next lap as Maynard Kinnersley took second. Moyer moved up to third the next lap and then took second after 3 more circuits. Barry Kinnersley slowed 2 laps later, catching Gannon who spun and hit the wall very hard on the back stretch. After the red lights were turned off the top 4 were Haller, Moyer, Maynard Kinnersley and Larry Cronin who inherited fourth. One lap after the restart saw Maynard Kinnersley spin in turn 1 but keep going as Ole Olsen moved up to fourth in his #23. Olsen would move up to second shortly thereafter. When the checkers waved it was Haller, Olsen, Cronin and Moyer.
“My first A win was a long time coming; 7 years in fact. And I did it all with a shattered foot” Haller stated. He continued by saying “I have an awful lot of people to thank; the two greatest daughters in the world, Coral and Sarah and my mother for putting up with me. Also Rick Scholl, Gary Campbell, Cody Harrington and Bill Sabin”. He ended the interview by stating “My closing quote would be ‘Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, because if the dream and desire are big enough and bad enough, the facts don’t count’”. Haller’s sponsors include Wicked Smoke, WRE, DSA Performance, Hillis 66, Elder Jewelry, M & N Sandwich Shop, M & L Painting, Hot Doggin’, DeLeons and Mojo Tattoos.
The final A Feature saw the Budweiser 360 sprints on the track. Jason Danley’s 82 was in the lead on lap one with Mike Boston’s 51, the 77 of John Klabunde and Jordan Boston’s 57 right behind. Both Bostons advanced 1 position on the next circuit and Danley dropped out the next lap, putting the 14G of Gene Ackland into fourth. Danley’s sprinter was smoking heavily with what turned out to be a blown seal on a brand new oil filter. Ackland passed Klabunde the next time around. The caution lights were lit on lap 7 when the 91 of Mitchell Moore slowed to a stop on the back stretch. One lap after the restart Jordan Boston passed Mike Boston for the lead. Mike Boston got the lead back 5 laps later but Jordan got back by him the next time around. The next circuit saw Zach Davis’ 3Z and the 6B of Frank Sheridan spin coming out of turn 4. The top 4 at that time were Jordan and Mike Boston, Ackland and Klabunde. Jeff Osborn spun his 0 on the restart lap and the yellow flag was displayed again. Mike Boston again snagged the point 2 laps after the restart. Lee Bowes spun the 57B in turn 2 after 3 more circuits and again the caution lights were lit. JR Topper spun his 92J in turn 2 on the restart and the field was bunched up again. Klabunde again grabbed third with 7 to go. The final caution came on the next lap when Tige Jensen spun the #71 in turns 1 and 2. The top 4 at the finish were Mike and Jordan Boston, Klabunde and Acklund.
Boston stated simply “It’s been too long, to say the least. I do want to thank my sponsors, because without them it wouldn’t have been possible”. Mike’s sponsors include Mook Trucking, Zoz Farms, Johnson Farms and Eckley Racing Engines.
