Hall Jr., Dover, Swarthout, Woehler, Ward, Kinnersley & Dover snag wins at Superganza-Driver Appreciation Night
By Greg Soukup
Very warm temperatures and a strong south wind greeted the near capacity crowd that came out for Superganza-Driver’s Appreciation Night sponsored by the Nebraska Lottery and Busch Light.
The make-up features from May 19th were run before the regular sho. The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A was up first and began on lap 3 where it was called the week before. Chad Fegley in the 13F, the 29 of Tim Kozak, Garrett Bolander’s 98X and Don Hall Jr. in the 92 were the first 4 back to the flag stand. Bolander and Hall Jr. both advanced 1 position on lap 5 before Hall Jr. got past Bolander the next lap and RJ Macku put the 1R into fourth. Macku advanced one spot on lap 9 and then another on lap 12. 4 laps later Fegley spun in turn 4 but restarted in time to salvage the 4th spot. Hall Jr. passed Macku shortly thereafter and held on for the win. At the finish it was Hall Jr., Macku, Bolander and Fegley.
“This was my third win altogether, but my first clean sweep. It took me 2 weeks to do it, but I won my heat last week and then the feature this week” Hall Jr. said. He continued by relating “I’m glad to race here. Roger busts his ass to keep the track growing, and it makes me proud to race here”. He concluded the interview by stating “I’m glad I made my sponsors proud. My thanks go out to them and of course my wife, daughter, father and all of my friends who make this possible. Especially Dad who has been a really big help this year”.
Hall Jr.’s sponsors include Ogden Insurance, Techmasters and the Beverage Connection.
The other make-up feature was for the Budweiser 360 Sprints. The first lap leader was the 23 of Terry Holliman, Jack Dover’s 53, the 14G of Gene Acklund and Mike Boston in the 51. Dover grabbed the lead on lap 3 and Trevor Grossenbacher moved the #35 into fourth. There was a medical emergency in the pits which caused the red lights to be lit to allow the medical personell to attend to them. This ended up being a lengthy red and the crews were allowed to attend to both the cars and drivers in the heat. After the race resumed the running order remained the same with Dover winning, Holliman second, Ackland third and Grossenbacher fourth.
The regular night’s racing then was started. In the fourth heat for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks Don Hall Jr. ended up barrel rolling his racer coming out of turn 4. He suffered a minor injury to the ankle, but was his usual “Captain Smiley” self when interviewed after the races. He did say “Penthouse to outhouse in 5 seconds” though.
In the second heat for the Nebraska Drive Shaft and Radiator IMCA Modifieds Chris Ableson got too high coming into turn 1, hit the cushion hard and ended up rolling the 1X. He would make repairs and return to the track later.
There were no other significant instances in the preliminary races.
The first regular A Main was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. The 2R of Don Rinke, the 98 of Dan Jackson, Steve Swarthout’s 23 and the 7 of Bob Ruisinger were the top 4 at the end of the first circuit. Swarthout passed Rinke for the lead on lap 2 and Ruisinger moved to 3rd the next time around. Swarthout grabbed the lead on lap 4 as Dustin Thayer cracked the top 4 in his #10T. Thayer got to 3rd the next lap and Benji Legg moved the 25B to fourth on lap 6. Both Thayer and Legg moved up a spot the next lap as Ruisinger again took fourth. The running order remained the same to the finish with Swarthout winning, Thayer 2nd, Legg 3rd and Ruisinger fourth.
Swarthout started the interview by saying “Tonight’s win is dedicated to Damon Swarthout and Isaac Corter, 2 kids that are battling cancer. In fact, Isaac was my crew chief tonight and is probably the youngest crew chief to win an A Feature at 13”. He concluded by saying “I need to thank all of the guys who work on my car. Barry Schomberg, Max Harder, Russell Harms and Matthew Keller do a great job on the car”. Swarthout’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Fairbury Journal News, Slim’s Body Shop and Maximum Performance.
Next was the 2nd A Main of the evening for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tim LaPointe led the pack on lap 1 in the 18 followed by the 42 of Rob Brown, Ben Becher’s B4 and the 2B of Bill Woehler. Becher passed Brown on lap 2 for second and Lee Kracht moved the 10K to fourth. Josh Kennell moved the 71K to fourth the next time around. Woehler took 2nd after 2 more circuits and Kennell moved to third as Kracht took the fourth position. Woehler snagged the lead on lap 7 and RJ Macku’s 1R moved up to fourth. The next lap Macku’s racer lost a wheel and went to the pits on the hook. Kracht also went to the pits during the caution. That made the running order Woehler, LaPointe, Kennel and the 94 of Mike Hansen. Kennell spun into the infield on lap 10, moving Becher to fourth. John Cain took the #44 past Becher the next time around but lost the spot back to him before they reached the flag stand. Reigning points champion Roy Armstrong suffered heavy damage to the front of the 6R on lap 14 and Bolander lost his left front tire. Hansen moved to fourth on lap 14 and then up to 3rd the next circuit. At the checkers it was Woehler, LaPointe, Hansen and Becher.
“This win was a long time coming! I come all the way from Sioux City, Iowa every Saturday, but the long drive is worth it. The track is always smooth and clean” Woehler stated. “We had a really bad week last week, but managed to come back and win” he continued. He finished the interview by saying “Thanks to Dave Rhiley, John Cain and my brother Richard for making it possible to race here every week”.
The Nebraska Drive Shaft and Radiator IMCA Modifieds were up next for their feature. Dustin Andersen’s 8A was in front at the end of lap 1 with Nathan Landauer’s 11N, the 77G of Dustin Gray and the 8C of Chad Andersen close behind. Dustin Andersen passed Gray on lap 3. Lap 4 saw the 4TW of Tim Ward also pass Gray to take fourth. Next time around Ward moved up to third. Landauer misjudged his entrance to turn 1 on lap 8 and struck the implement tire guarding the pit entrance broadside. Landauer was uninjured but his badly bent race car went to the pits behind the wrecker. At that time the top 4 were Dustin Andersen, Ward, Chad Andersen and the 86 of Justin Wulf. Ward took the lead for good on lap 19 and held on for his first victory at Eagle Raceway.
“The track was good and smooth with a nice cushion on top and it was a really fun race. The racing was great” Ward said. “The racing was great, but everybody was running the top so I knew I had to get by on the bottom. When I did, I just had to hang on to the finish” he concluded.
Ward’s sponsors include France Motorsports, Fry’s Food Stores, Sims Metal Management and Pratt Wraps.
The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact then came out for their A Main. The first four back to the flag stand were the 69 of Kenny Roberts, Barry Kinnersley in the 00, Maynard Kinnersley’s 18 and Amanda Rhiley in the 51. Barry took the lead from Roberts on lap 2. Rhiley and Maynard both passed Roberts on lap 4. Roberts spun in turn 4 2 laps later, moving the 45SX of Travis Schellpeper to fourth. Nick Lindblad got his #26 past Schellpeper on the restart and got past Rhiley the next lap. Schellpeper passed Rhiley also, but Rhiley got him back before the flag stand. At the end it was Barry Kinnersley, Maynard Kinnersley, Lindblad and Rhiley.
Barry began his interview by saying “It’s really nice to win in front of 10 thousand people!!”. He concluded the interview by stating “I owe a lot to Nick Lindblad, Matt Moyer, Chad Bassinger and Maynard ‘The Hammer’. Actually, I’m the new generation…Hammer 2.0, and it’s nice to beat my dad; AGAIN!”.
The finale was the regular Feature race for the Budweiser 360 Sprint Cars. The first four to the flag stand on lap 1 were the 53 of Jack Dover, Billy Alley in the 57, Mark Pace’s 31 and the 28 of Ken Klabunde. Jason Danley spun the 82 on the back stretch on lap #3. Klabunde took third from Pace on the restart, but lost the position back to Pace on lap 5. Trevor Grossenbacher got the #35 past Klabunde on lap 6. Pace passed Dover on lap 10 for the lead. Gossenbacher moved up to third on lap 13 and Dover regained first 3 laps later, but Gage Dorr’s 17, the 77 of John Klabunde and Roger Sluka’s X29 stop at the top of turn 1. The top four at that time were Pace, Dover, Grossenbacher and Alley. Dover got a good run on the restart, getting back past Pace. With 8 laps remaining Grossenbacher took second from Pace. The next lap a car hit one of the implement tires in turns 1 & 2 to bring out the caution. There were 5 laps left when Nick Bryan’6 and the 23 of Terry Holliman made contact and stopped coming out of turn 4. Ken Klabunde retook fourth on the restart. Dorr stopped with just 3 to go. Grossenbacher did a 360 degree spin on the restart but kept going, and the yellow flag was displayed again. Pace was put back to fourth with Ken Klabunde moving up to third. It was Dover, Grossenbacher, Klabunde and Pace at the end.
“These wins would never be possible if it wasn’t for the people who help me get them. I owe a lot to Will, Wolfie, Mom and Dad, Zach and Wyatt” Dover related.
Dover’s sponsors include Homepride Companies, Certified, Eagle Chassis, Roush Racing Engines, Speedway Graphics, Thorpe’s Body Shop and Trail Performance.
