Interview with 2022 Track Champion Joey Danley
By Greg Soukup
Well, that nasty deity that all dirt track fans love to hate whose name will not grace this document, (but whose initials are MN)has once again taken away the Icebreaker Challenge from us. So, let’s do a quick visit with last year’s Twin Rivers IMCA Sprint Car points champion, Joey Danley.
This was Joey’s first championship in a sprint car, after beginning in a sport compact in 2009. He raced his first sprint in 2014 which he states was a really big jump! In his words with a laugh “Just a little bit!!!”.
Joey said that last season’s championship was gained by “Consistency I guess. We went into last season with that goal, trying to finish every race in one piece. I think I did that every time but once when I rolled my racer in the heat and then blew the engine in the B Feature”. I asked whether he was satisfied with his results and he said “Yeah!! Really happy!!!”. Joey may not have won a lot of races, but you knew he was going to be there at the end of the race fighting for the lead.
This season he wants to branch out a little bit, “I think I’m going to follow the Malvern Bank 360 series and then race at Eagle every time the 360’s aren’t running. Of course, that’s the plan right now but we all know that could change any day. I think I’ll only miss 4 or 5 weeks at Eagle”.
He concluded his interview by relating “I need to thank my Sponsors; Empire Fencing, The Wave, My Salesman, Nissen Hardwood Floors, Onyx Digital Group and High Performance Lubricants. Of course, I couldn’t do it at all without the people who are there for me every week. My Dad, Cole, Mark, Kyle and Terry”.
NOW! If MN allows it, next Saturday April 22nd A1 Iron and Empire Fence present the 2023 Regular Season opener at Eagle Raceway. This will mark the 60th year of slinging dirt on the high banks of America’s Home Track, Eagle Raceway.
