Kiihne, Stutzman, Hiatt, Ackland & Andrews are victorious at Armed Forces Salute!

by Greg Soukup

It was a great night for racing at Eagle Raceway last night as Duros Dent Works and Empire Fence presented Armed Forces Night. A total of 137 cars filled the pits and a very large crowd filled the stands.

Unfortunately, the evening took a very bad turn when in the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car B Feature Tom Belsky’s #28X rode up over the rear wheel of the car in front of him. It sent him flipping, making very hard contact with the implement tire guarding the pit entrance and the side of the car, collapsing the cage into his seat. After he was extricated he was life flighted to the hospital. His wife has advised that he is in stable condition but will need lots of support and recovery. Please keep Tom and his family in your thoughts and prayers. This occurred on a restart after Dan Satriano went flipping in turns 3 and 4 on the first lap. He was not seriously injured, but the car was severely damaged.

The first A Feature was for the A1 Iron Works IMCA Stock Cars. Nate Thompson put his 24T out front on lap 1 followed by the 7P of Matt Fralin, Dylan Haney’s 12X and the 22S of Shane Stutzman. Fralin took the lead on lap 2 and Stutzman moved up to third. 2 cars spun in turn 4 the next time around causing a caution. On the restart Nick Beckman looped the #22. Stutzman grabbed the lead a lap after the restart with Trey Duensing taking the third spot in the 3D and Kyle Vanover’s 19 moving to fourth. Vanover passed Duensing the following circuit and moved up to second the next lap as Benji Legg took the fourth spot in the 84. Legg advanced to third with 9 to go. Jordan Grabouski took fourth in the 30 the following lap but lost the spot to Cade Richards in the 1R after another circuit. The final top 4 were Stutzman, Vanover, Legg and Richards.

“It was a great night to be back here at Eagle! I’m so glad that they got the stock cars running again this year. I used to race here back in 2000. They always had stock cars for specials, but now that they’re racing weekly it’s great to be back” Shane said. He continued by stating “There was quite a bit of moisture around the bottom there and as long as I kept it around the bottom and got a good bite I could keep it out front” Shane’s sponsors include Imperial Manufacturing, Jackson Friesen Construction, Excel Floor Covering, Ready Set Snow, Goldfuss Racing and Fab, Bob’s Service, Troyer Concrete, Union Bank and Trust, Pro Cut Tires, Wergin’s Lawn Service and Schaefer’s Oil.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale’s first lap saw Albert Kiihne’s 85, the 66 of Jeff Watts, Tyler Jackson’s 13T and the 6R of Roy Armstrong out front. Mike Hansen passed Armstrong to put the 94 into fourth on lap 2, but looped it in turn 1 on lap 6 allowing Jeff Ware’s 83 to snag fourth. On the restart Ryan Roschewski’s 2R, the 10 of Brad Schreiner and Don Hall’s 92 spun to a halt in turns 1 & 2. Ware moved up to third with 12 to go. 2 laps later Jackson made contact with Ware and spun himself out coming out of turn 4. That allowed Armstrong to regain fourth.  One lap after the restart Ware advanced to second and started battling Kiihne for the lead. Armstrong took over third and the next time around Ben Becher advanced to fourth in the B4. The top 4 at the checkers were Kiihne, Ware, Armstong and Becher.

I mentioned that Albert had plenty of competition and he replied “That I did!! Roy is always stiff competition, Ware does an amazing job at what he does. There are lots of times I will watch other people’s features at other tracks and try to study them to see where I might be able to beat them. I found that place tonight. Two weeks ago the car just pushed like a dump truck. The weekend we got rained out I had it in the shop from Thursday night until 2 o’clock in the morning. I had it torn apart, checking this, and checking that. Finally, I made some adjustments and figured ‘I’m just going to send it!!’. It must have been the right adjustments because I won. It was a lot of fun though. I really don’t have any sponsors, just friends and family. I fund it all on my own. The Busch Light on the car I figured I drank enough of it that I’d put it on as part of the wrap”. Hopefully, someone will step up and help Albert out.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds were next up for their A Main. Bob Zoubek led the first circuit in his 5S with Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 21H of Shane Hiatt and Jared Deterding in the 13J close behind. Terry Hurt passed Deterding on lap 2 to put the 24T into fourth. Hiatt moved up to second the following circuit. Mike Densberger put the 81 into third on lap 7 moving Pella to fourth as Hiatt grabbed the lead. Jordan Grabouski took the fourth spot away from Pella in the #30. Grabouski moved up to third with 7 circuits remaining and took over second 2 laps later. The final top 4 were Hiatt, Grabouski, Zoubek and Densberger.

“We started a little ways back, third row outside which helps. If you have to start fifth or 6th row it makes it tough to get up there. We were fortunate and found a groove and just kept rolling around there pretty good. Everything felt really nice tonight. There were a couple of lapped cars there where it got kind of sketchy. There were some close calls, but we made it through them. The car felt great, and that’s all that we can ask for. I need to thank my Mom and Dad, my wife Kylie, my brother Shawn who is my crew chief and everyone else who helps out with the car during the week. Also, I want to say that we’re all thinking of the sprint car driver that got injured tonight and hope that everything is well for he and his family. We hope he pulls through, whatever his injuries may be”.

Shane’s sponsors include BSB Manufacturing, RC Pit Stop, BBR, Skytop Towers, J&K, DSR, Big Red Towing, Jed’s Backstretch BBQ, Wetlands Bar & Grill, Spock, Cruz Hiatt Motorsports, Beyea Headers, Emma, Pody’s Bar and Eagle Performance Machine Inc.

The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmods took to the track next. Roger Sluka’s 5S, the 22 of Matt Andrews, Shawn Hein’s 5H and Cade Richards’ 1R were the top 4 on lap 1. Lap 2 saw Richards pass Hein for third. Shawn Harker put the 40 into fourth the next time around. Harker jumped up to second on lap 7 with Sluka third and Lance Borgman taking fourth in the 76 and passing Sluka the next lap for third with Adam Armstrong putting the 6A into fourth before advancing to third with 6 to go. Borgman and Armstrong took turns in the third spot over the next 3 laps with Borgman finishing there. The top 4 were Andrews, Harker, Borgman and Armstrong.

“It helps being able to start near the front and doing well in the heat. We worked on this car all day yesterday and all morning today with Johnny Saathoff from Jet Racing over the phone getting it to where we need it. We were coasting pretty good in the lead for a while, but then I came up on lapped traffic, so I started slowing down my corner entry because I was worried about something happening. I probably should have kept after it, but oh well; we still got the win”.

Matt’s sponsors include Skytop Towers, Bonton Medical, JM Billiards, Big Red Lawn Care, RDM Landscapes, PBS Rentals and Raymond Contracting.

To close out the evening the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprints took to the high banks. Lap 1 saw Tim Hilfiker’s 20, the 25 of Gunnar Pike, Gene Ackland in the 14G and Chase Weiler’s 0 out front. Ackland moved up to third on lap 2 with Ryan King also passing Weiler in his 93 to snag fourth. Neil Nickolite smacked the front stretch wall hard on lap 2, badly damaging his front end. He ended going off on the hook. Ackland advanced to second 1 lap after the restart. King took over third on lap 7 but lost the spot back to Pike the next circuit. Lap 10 saw Ackland move up to first. King again took over the third spot with 11 to go. 2 more laps were in the books when Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth. Danley continued his march forward, advancing to third with 6 to go and taking second with 4 to go. Ackland held on for the win, Danley was second but was disqualified after the race for excessive spring pressure. That moved Hilfiker to second, King to third and Jason Danley to fourth.

“The track kind of played into my hands tonight, where I like to run obviously. I knew that if I could just get the lead and be consistent I could do it. I made a few mistakes early on, but once I got to the lead, I think I did a pretty good job of hitting my marks, and then it was just ‘Don’t mess up’. I figured that if I heard somebody coming then I would have to do something different. It felt really, really good. The car has been fast this year after we changed a few things. Fueling, headers and gearing were tweaked, and the car has really come to life. It’s been fast, but the first 2 features I spun, got the lead and spun out; it’s just little mess ups that have been hurting us”.

Gene’s sponsors include Five Nines, Colby Ridge, Ironwood Builders and Bluestem Landscaping. Colby Ridge and Ironwood Builders have been supporting Gene for many, many years; since he was racing 360 sprints at Eagle.
