May Day Madness winners are Grabouski, Weiler, Ware & Baker

By Greg Soukup

Saturday was May Day Madness, presented by Hotsy Equipment Co. and Empire Fence and Netting at Eagle Raceway and you couldn’t ask for better weather! Temperatures in the 80’s gave way to the 60’s and the large crowd was treated to fantastic racing with 3 and 4-wide action right into the features.

The only serious incident in the preliminary racing came on lap 1 of the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint B Feature. Troy Sanford got pushed high going into turn on and slammed sideways into the implement tire guarding the main pit entrance. He was not seriously injured, but his racer suffered too much damage to continue.

The initial A Feature was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Lap 1 saw Tim Horsham’s 3 hit the front stretch wall. After he got going again the restart saw him loop it on the back stretch. When a lap was officially in the books Dylan Haney’s 12X was out front with Bob Ruisinger’s 7, the 30 of Jordan Grabouski and Austin Brauner’s 10A close behind. Grabouski moved up to second on lap 2 with Dan Jackson putting the 3AM into third and Ruisinger falling to fourth. Grabouski snagged the lead the next time around with Cade Richards jumping up to third in the 1R and Ruisinger clinging to fourth. Horsham spun again the next lap, this time in turn 4 to bring out the caution flag. On the restart Horsham spun again in turn 4 and was sent to the pits. Richards moved up to second on the restart. Matt Boucher passed Ruisinger on the restart to put the 5B into fourth the next lap. Lap 8 saw Kyle Vanover put the #19 into fourth and moving to third 2 laps later. Shane Stutzman looped the 22 in turn 2 with 2 to go to slow the action again. Richards got past Grabouski on the final lap but slipped up and allowed Grabouski to get the win with Richards, Vanover and Boucher rounding out the top 4.

This was Grabouski’s first Stock Car win at Eagle this season. “We need to slow Cade down a little bit I think. He’s a heck of a young racer and it’s really cool to battle with him like that. He got me last week, but tonight was my turn. I really thought I got beat by him tonight, but I hit the top of 3 and 4 on the last lap and beat him by a car length or so. It was a fun night and that had to be a great race for the fans”. Jordan’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

Next up were the Valentino’s IZMCA Hobby Stocks. Khrysta Stransky’s 39 and the 66 of Jeff Watts made contact on lap 1 with Stransky slamming hard into the implement tire guarding the back pit entrance. Both Stransky’s and Watts’ cars were to badly damaged to continue. On the complete restart Kyle Schamp’s 2K, the 7T of Tanner Dowty, Brint Lemke’s 26L and the B4 of Ben Becher were the top 4. Lap 3 saw Ryan Gilland jump up to third in the 46. Roy Armstrong put his 6R into fourth the next circuit. Tyler Jackson’s 13T came to a halt in turns 1 & 2 on lap 6 and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Armstrong used the restart to advance to third with Jeff Ware’s 83 following him into fourth after another lap. Ware passed Armstrong the next time around, but the following circuit saw Armstrong vault up to the top spot with Ware moving up to second. Ware got past Armstrong again with 8 to go, taking over the lead as Lemke moved to fourth. Mike Hansen got past Lemke with 5 laps remaining putting the 94 into fourth and then moving up to third on the final circuit. The top 4 were Ware, Armstrong, Gilland and Hansen.

Win #1 on the season at Eagle Raceway made up for the mechanical problems that plagued Ware the previous weekend. “It was a decent night. We’ve been fighting a little monkey with the car, so we went back to basics and got the steering figured out because we had that steering failure last week and the car is just as fast as it’s ever been. We did pick up a couple of new sponsors this year, and that always helps”. Ware’s sponsors include Cork and Barrel, Hein Auto Body, T&R Auto Repair, Swift Springs, CPD Shocks, Quick Performance, Dynamic Drivelines, Charger Chassis and Demon Decals.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified Feature saw a large pileup in turn 4 after Hunter Weber’s 99W got turned in turn 3, shooting him up the track and collecting Mike Densberger’s 81 and the 96J of John Saathoff. Bob Zoubek grabbed the lead on the complete restart in the 5S with Josh Blumer’s 21, the 24T of Terry Hurt and the 66 of Trevor Noonan chasing him. Justin Wulf’s 86 and Zoubek came to a halt in 1 & 2 on lap 2 with Blumer heading to the pits. That moved Hurt to second, Jaxon Saathoff to third in the 96 and the V22 of Rik Gropp to fourth. Saathoff grabbed the lead on the restart with Jordan Grabouski putting the #30 into fourth. Grabouski moved up to third on lap 4. The yellow flag was displayed on lap 6 for debris. Ryan Jenkins moved the #6 into fourth on the restart. Grabouski advanced to second the next lap. Lap 8 saw a big pileup in turn 3 as John Saathoff, Clint Homan’s 27 and Zoubek wrecked badly. Shane Hiatt also headed to the pits in the 21H. That made the top 4 Jaxon Saathoff, Grabouski, Jenkins and Hurt. Grabouski got around Jaxon Saathoff with 11 to go and Jenkins followed him into second with 8 laps remaining. Densberger moved the 81 into fourth the next lap. The final change in the top 4 came with 2 to go as Jaxon Saathoff moved back into second making the final top 4 Grabouski, Jaxon Saathoff, Jenkins and Densberger.

“Our modified has been good all year. We’ve had good luck here at Eagle and it’s always fun when you can win like that, getting the lead and then stretching it out to the checkers. It may not be as exciting for the fans, but it sure was for us and my team!”. Jordan’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmod A Feature’s first circuit was led by Joe Feyen’s 25X with Adam Vrbka’s 7V, Trevor Baker in the 25! and Steffen Oaks in the 17X close behind. Baker moved to second on lap 2. Feyen spun out in turn 3 on lap 5 moving Baker, Vrbka and Oaks up and putting the 27X of Dane Martindale to fourth. Cole Wayman cracked the top 4 in his 18W with 11 to go but lost the spot back to Martindale the next time around. Shawn Harker took over fourth in his #40 with 6 to go and moved up to third 3 laps later. The final top 4 were Baker, Vrbka, Harker and Oaks.

This second night of the season brought Baker his second win at Eagle Raceway. “The car was flying!! We seemed to have gotten some blind squirrel luck over the winter and found some speed in the car. We’ve just been dialing it in and we’re going to try to go for track championships here at Eagle and down at Beatrice too because we plan on moving up to a full modified next year. We need to get that done now. I’ve really been happy with the move that Roger made with the running order. I think it makes the track more driver ability instead of just pushing the go pedal, so that’s always good stuff. My cousin Easton has cystic fibrosis, so we’re racing for him this year; trying to raise awareness of CF”. Baker’s sponsors include BBR, Shaw Race Cars, PM Manufacturing and BSB Manufacturing.

Last on the track for the evening were the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Gene Ackland’s 14G was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 with Shon Pointer’s 20P, the 55 of Doug Lovegrove and Nate Weiler in the 4W hot on his push bumper. Ackland spun out at the top of turn 2 on lap 2 for a caution. That moved Jason Danley into fourth as the other 3 advanced a spot. Neil Nickolite passed Danley on lap 4, putting the 12N into fourth. Weiler made a huge move on lap 8 for the lead as Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth. Nickolite jumped up to second after 2 more circuits were in the books. Pointer regained the second spot with 7 to go and Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into fourth 3 laps later. The final top 4 were Weiler, Pointer, Nickolite and Grossenbacher.

This was Weiler’s very first win in a race car. “I’m speechless really. This is something that I never thought would be possible for me. I’ve spent many years as a pit crew member, but I had never driven any kind of dirt track car in my life before the Racesaver class came to Eagle. Racing with some of the best people in the sport and in this class, plus the fact that I just beat all of the tonight feels amazing!!! Everybody keeps telling me I was pulling away, but I don’t have a mirror in the car, and I wasn’t going to try and look behind me. So, I was just going as fast as I could go and hoping that the tires would last. I need to thank my family; they do a lot of work on the car. My dad works on it during the week, maintenance wise when I’m not there. They are the ones who help keep the car on the racetrack”. I mentioned that he ran most of the race when his usual line is around the bottom and he replied “I bet the fans and everyone were surprised about that! I found the rubber and just stuck right there!!”.

Weiler’s sponsors include Auto Transmatic, Assassin Racing Engines and Tom Grasso with Vahlco Wheels.

Next weekend is Moms Rock night at America’s Home Track, presented by Busch Lite and Rotella’s. As usual, all 5 classes will be competing, including the Duros Dent Works Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, A1 Iron/Sany Stock Cars, Modern Real Estate SportMods & Valentino’s Hobby Stocks.
