Richards, Etherton, Thompson, Andrews & Drueke are victorious at Eagle’s Championship Showdown!
By Greg Soukup
A large crowd showed up Saturday evening for the Championship Showdown, presented by Avid Realty, Nebraska Septic, Pepsi, Great Clips and Empire Fence. With the points championships in all 5 classes up for grabs, everyone was either on the edge of their seats, or on their feet cheering on their favorite driver.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing action.
In the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car class, Nick Beckman held a 19 point lead over Arie Schouten going into the night’s action. Jeff Watts’ 66 led the first lap of the A Feature over the 17K of Dana Rasmussen, Scott Carlson’s 1C and the 7 of Riley Ruisinger. Matt Boucher passed Ruisinger on lap 5 to put the 5B into fourth place. Tommy Etherton cracked the top 4 with 10 to go when he got past Boucher to put the 24T into fourth as Carlson moved up to second. Travis Patterson’s 17TK and the 5J of Jakob Boucher spun to a halt coming out of turn 2 with 7 to go and the yellow flag flew. Rasmussen took advantage of the restart to pass Watts for the lead. Etherton jumped all the way up to second the next time around. The following circuit Nathan Landauer moved up to fourth in the 11N. Etherton grabbed the top spot with 4 to go. The final change in the top 4 came 2 laps later when Kyle Vanover jumped up to third in the 19. The final top 4 were Etherton, Rasmussen, Vanover and Landauer. The season points went to the #22 of Nick Beckman who failed to start the A Main but won the championship by 41 points.
This was Tommy’s second feature win of this, his rookie season in the class. He stated “The car was really fast tonight. I just had to be patient and wait for the holes to open up so I could make my move. I want to thank all of the guys at Slider Chassis, Jeremy, Travis and Noah. Also, my Dad, my wife and my whole family. Thanks to Noah who has been turning wrenches for me the past couple of weeks and that has helped me a lot”. Tommy’s sponsors include Leiting Motorsports, Slider Chassis, The Load Shop, Shriners Hospitals, Bill and Marna Johnson, Findlay Chiropractic, Stranik Countertops and Parkay Inc.
In the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod class Cole Wayman was just 11 counters ahead of last year’s points champion Adam Vrbka. Tyler Deeke put his #15 out front on lap 1 of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A, followed by Drew Hobaugh in the 33DH, the 8X of Justin Bell and Lauren Cook’s 9X. Bell moved to second place on lap 2 with Cook following him into third. There was a 4 car pileup in turn 2 the next lap with Adam Armstrong’s 6A, the 96 of Gary Saathoff, the 413 of Beau Riffel and McLain Reed’s 44 coming to a halt. Matt Andrews moved to fourth on the restart in the #22 before advancing to third the following lap. Drake Bohlmeyer put his #24 into fourth place on lap 9. The next circuit saw Andrews move up to second. Adam Vrbka took over fourth place with 9 laps remaining and advanced to third the next time around. 1 more lap was in the books when Vrbka took over the second position. Bohlmeyer moved up to third with 5 to go. Cole Wayman joined the top 4 with 3 circuits remaining in the 18W. No further changes occurred to the checkered flag with Andrews, Vrbka, Bohlmeyer and Wayman the top 4. Wayman managed to hold onto the points lead, finishing just 9 markers ahead of Adam.
This was Matt’s first victory of the season. I mentioned to Matt that it had been a long time since I had the honor of interviewing him, to which he replied “That’s honest to God the best I’ve felt in the car all year and it’s the hardest I’ve worked all year. I thought while driving the car that we had transmission issues but Dad thought the batteries were too old so we fixed the transmission, well…..kind of fixed it we thought and changed the batteries. We put the transmission back in but it wouldn’t go into gear so we took it out again and changed the shims again. When the stock cars had 18 to go in their feature my buddy pulled up and said, ‘I think it’s the carburetor, let’s change it’. I told him ‘Okay, I’m getting into the car and you changed the carburetor. We got that done with 7 or 8 to go in the stock car A so we pulled down to the staging area and whatever was wrong was definitely fixed. Now, we have to figure out what fixed it. I have got to thank my Dad tonight. He busted his hiney and I busted my hiney. I’ve never had to change my shirt 3 times at a racetrack and I’ve never worked this hard at a racetrack. The way that the lifts work now we did everything we could to get our fat butts under them. But we made it out there and everything worked out in our favor and the car was awesome. I need to thank my wife, because without her with work and everything else going on she literally mans the house. About once a week I make steaks on the grill and she takes care of the rest”. Matt’s sponsors include Air Cut Fabrication, Jet Racing, Skytop Towers, Strategic EMS Bonta Medical, All Pro Heating and Air, Underdog Deigns, Big Red Lawn Care, RDM Landscapes and Jeff Fosse at State Farm.
Bob Zoubek was just 4 points ahead of Chad Andersen before Saturday and 17 ahead of Shawn Harker. Lap #1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified Feature was led by the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein with Dan Jackson’s 35X second, Brandon Verbeek third in the 4B and Jared Deterding’s 13J. 1lap after a yellow flag on lap 3 Nate Thompson passed Deterding to put the 3T into fourth, got past Verbeek on lap 6 and moved up to second place after another lap. Zoubek moved the 5S to fourth place after another lap. Zoubek then advanced to the third position with 10 circuits remaining. Thompson took over the lead the next time around. Zoubek advanced to second place with 4 to go. The yellow flag was displayed the next lap when James Messenbrink looped the 33M in turn 4. The restart saw Harker put the #40 into fourth. Zoubek got loose in turn 4 the following circuit, falling back to fourth place when Harker and Ziegenbein both passed him. Clint Homan jumped up to the third position with 2 to go as Ziegenbein got past Zoubek for fourth. Zoubek was able to regain fourth the next lap. The final top 4 were Thompson, Harker, Homan and Zoubek. Zoubek held on for the season championship by 17 points.
Nate had seen a long time between wins before this one. “It’s a relief to finally get a win here at Eagle. I think my last one was in 2019, so this one was special. I have a lot of people to thank for helping me come out to race every week. Michelle Hadan makes sure I have a motor to run. Indra Lawn Care helps us out a bunch, making sure that I have everything that I need and so do Crown Builders. Stumpy’s Creations makes sure that my cars always look great and we appreciate everything they do for us. And T3 Fabrication is a big help too”.
Adam Wasserman led the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock points race going into Saturday in what was the most hotly contested chase, leading Colin Hein by just 2 points and Dillon Richards by a mere 3 points The initial circuit of the Hobby Stock main event saw Robert Salts put the 10-4 out front with Tyler Saathoff’s 11B, Tyler Ramsey’s 72 and the 11 of Eric Chab rounding out the top 4. Brandon Fisher vaulted up to third on lap 2 in the 25. The next circuit saw Colin Hein’s 19H and the 6 of Dan Markham stop on the front stretch for a caution period. Fisher moved past Saathoff on the restart to take over second place with Saathoff falling to third place as Dillon Richards put the 24R into the fourth spot. Richards passed Saathoff for third the next lap. Richards got past Fisher on lap 9 but the pass was negated when Ramsey spun out in turn 4, moving the 3N of Neil Pella into fourth. Richards moved back up to second place on the restart and Pella followed him into third the following lap. The final change in the top 4 came with 5 circuits remaining when Richards passed Salts for the lead. The final top 4 were Richards, Salts, Pella and Chab.
The win gave Richards the points crown by just 1 single point. “That was pretty cool! I didn’t know what to expect going into the last night. We’ll take it!! I started 10th, so I had to keep my tires clean and keep away from contact. I knew we’d get there; I just didn’t know where Adam would finish. We had a couple of bad nights lately so we had to fight back and come a long way to get here, so I’ll take it”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Extreme Motorsports, Brock Ackerman, Brian Jurgens, Ben Tart Construction, Dad, Johnny Thomas Racing, Nelson Tree Service, S and L Trenching, Jer’s Restoration and Fabrication, Cat’s Fireworks, Freese Farms, Inline Healing, The Rail Rocks, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, In Loving Memory JR Craig-Denise, Troy Cepak, Popeye Engines & Carbs, Landrum Performance Springs, Speedway shocks, Jet Racing. Backspin Entertainment, Aero Race Wheels, James Hadorn, Bud and Neapco.
The points lead for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars was held by Jason Danley over Cole Wayman by 11 markers and 18 over Brandon Horton. First back to the flag stand in their A Feature was the 20D of Jacob Dye with Josh Riggins’ 14J, the 8B of Jake Galusha and Cade Richards in the 11R. Tyler Drueke passed Richards on lap 2 to put the 12 into fourth place. Danley and the 11 of Taylor Velasquez made contact coming out of turn 4 on lap 3. Velasquez stopped but Danley managed to keep going as the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Bret Klabunde’s 77 came to a halt in turns 1 and 2 on the restart to slow the action again. Galusha grabbed second on the restart but lost the spot back to Riggins the next time around and also was passed by Drueke that lap. Drueke continued his march to the front, advancing to second as Richards regained fourth when Galusha slowed going down the back stretch. Gunnar Pike took over the fourth spot on lap 7 in his #25. Drueke passed Dye on lap 11. Pike moved up to third with 10 to go and advanced to second 5 laps later. No further changes were made in the top 5 with Drueke winning by over ½ lap, Pike second, Dye third and Riggins fourth. Danley managed to hold on for the points championship by 9 over Wayman and 19 over Horton.
I kidded Tyler about skipping championship night at Knoxville just to come and show the other sprint car drivers his tail tank in the feature. He stated “We just tried to make it go around the corners and try to do it better than anybody else. It was pretty good, but there’s a few little things I would like to do a little differently, trying to make it a little better but it was pretty close” Tyler’s sponsors include MySalesman.com, Zoz Farms, Cherny Enterprises LLC, American Trailer Company, Jeffries Trucking, J&J Auto Racing, Kings Auto Supply, Angel Energy Services, Speedway Racing Engines Forbes Motorsports and Drueke Trucking.
This marked the end of the regular season for Eagle Raceway, but there’s still LOTS of racing to go. As they say, the best is yet to come!! Starting next Thursday, the biggest IMCA Racesaver contest in the country begins with pre-race tech, a practice night and the qualifying heats for the BlueMax Pay Race of Champions.
Pits and grandstands open at 5:00 with adult front gate admission being just $3 with those 12 and under free. Pit passes are just $20.
Following Race of Champions qualifying there will be a Pit Party with live entertainment. The infamous Melon Bar will remain open until 1 AM.
