Richards, Saathoff, Wade, Danley & Saathoff finish 1st at Eagle Raceway Jr. Fan Club Night

Richards, Saathoff, Wade, Danley & Saathoff finish 1st at Eagle Raceway Jr. Fan Club Night

By Greg Soukup

A gorgeous spring late afternoon greeted the fans in the stands and the 143 teams that filled the pits Saturday at Eagle Raceway for Junior Fan Club Night presented by Avid Realty. The younger fans had a blast at intermission as they sought their fortunes in the Sam’s Club Kid’s Money Grab.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary races.

The first lap of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A Feature saw the 5B of Matt Boucher, Gary Laflin’s 9, the 12X of Dylan Haney and Dan Jackson’s 3AM the first four back to the flag stand. Jackson got loose on lap 3, sliding sideways and making contact with the 24R of Dillon Richards and causing Bob Ruisinger’s 7 to come to a halt at the top of turn 2. Jackson kept going and held onto fourth with Boucher first, Marty Steinbach second in the 5ELI and Haney third. Lap 4 saw Richards pass Jackson for fourth. Richards moved up to third on lap 7 and advanced to second the next time around. Steinbach took over the third spot with 8 to go. The 17TK of Travis Patterson came to a halt at the bottom of turn 4 with 6 circuits left for a caution. Richards took advantage of the restart to grab the lead from Boucher. From there to the finish the top 4 remained unchanged with Richards the victor, Boucher second, Steinbach third and Haney fourth.

The victory was the second for Richards this year at Eagle. He related “It took me awhile to get up front, especially after that early incident where somebody collected me in the right rear. It knocked my glasses off of my face, so I couldn’t really see that well. I needed that caution so I could settle myself down and fix my glasses. Once I did that I was good to go. I knew that if I was able to just roll around the bottom that I could hold them off. The track was pretty technical tonight. You had to hit your marks every time and if you didn’t someone could pass you”. Dillon’s sponsors include JGR, CPD Shocks, S&L Trenching and Fester’s Bait and Tackle.

Next up were the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Roger Sluka’s 5s got sideways on the first attempt at a start, collecting several other cars. Sluka went to the pits on the hook and the field lined up for a complete restart. Gary Saathoff put the 96 out front of the first circuit followed by the 7X of Lauren Cook, Tyler Harr’s 21T and the 6SJ of Shawn PospisiI. Adam Armstrong passed Pospisil on lap 3 in the 6A and went past Harr the next time around. Adam Vrbka joined the lead pack after another lap to put the 7V into fourth. Armstrong moved up to second the next time around with Drake Bohlmeyer putting the 24 into fourth. Vrbka got back by Bohlmeyer for fourth the following circuit and moved to third the next lap. 1 more lap was in the books when Matt Andrews put his #22 into fourth. The top 4 ended up being Saathoff, Armstrong, Vrbka and Andrews.

I mentioned to Gary that it had been a long time since I was able to interview  him and he replied “Yeah, it’s been about 4 years. I thought I had forgotten how to win. I kept doing my old school stuff but I have some guys helping me out and teaching me the new way, so it’s getting better. The track changed really fast tonight. The stock cars were running around the top and the bottom was really greasy so I started out around the top but it was too far around and too bumpy. So, I got down to the bottom and it was really fast! I originally started out fourth but then there was that pileup on the start. I was coming down the backstretch, a car came up so I started to move up so I wouldn’t get into them and then another guy started going to the outside. I was lucky to not get caught up in the mess. When you get the chance to start out front with the competition here you had better take advantage of it. I need to thank my pit crew; Gary Laflin, James Hines and Curt Hansen”. Gary’s sponsors include Stone Cold Restorations, BBR Suspensions, Wasserman Trucking, Jet Racing, Renee Bartlett Insurance, Travis Gillman Handyman Services.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks rolled out for their A Main. Camden Stephenson looped his 14S in turn 4 on the first lap, collecting Tanner Dowty’s 7T, the 13T of Tyler Jackson and Dave Carter’s 2C. Kyle Gannon put the 66G out front of the first official lap with Michael Wade’s 12, the 3N of Neil Pell and Brad Schreiner’s 10 rounding out the top 4. Wade jumped up to the lead on lap 2. Lap 4 saw a caution for debris in turns 3 & 4. Adam Wasserman put the 41 into fourth on lap 7. There were 10 laps remaining when Wasserman advanced to third with Pella holding onto fourth. Wasserman continued his march forward, grabbing second the following circuit with Schreiner getting by Pella for fourth. Pella regained the spot after another lap but ended up falling back. The final top 4 were Wade, Wasserman, Gannon and Schreiner.

Michael is a direct descendant of the local racing legend Smokin’ Joe Wade who graced local tracks for many many years. This was Michael’s first ever IMCA Hobby Stock victory! “I have to thank Adam Wasserman for racing me cleanly. He always does. I think everybody had an amazing night. The track has been really good, as always. I like what they did to it this winter. The weather was great tonight. Thank you to all of the track crew, the safety crew and all of the competitors. Thank you to everybody who helps me out; you know who you are”. Michael’s sponsors include Hoppe Farms, Complete Ag, East Side Bar and Grill and City Slickers.

Brandon Verbeek spun his 4B out in turns 1 & 2 on the first lap of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified feature, causing a complete restart. Dustin Andersen spun the 8A to the infield on the restart for another caution. The first official lap saw John Saathoff’s 96J in the lead with Shawn Harker’s 40, the 18W of Cole Wayman and the X52 of Sean Manning in hot pursuit. Jaxon Saathoff passed Manning on lap 2 to put the 96 into fourth. The yellow lights were lit in the corners for debris in turn 4 on the 9th circuit. Wayman moved up to second on the restart as Bob Zoubek cracked the top 4 in the 5S. Jeremy Baker’s 3J spun out in turn 4 with 8 laps left. Harker passed Wayman for second on the restart and Terry Hurt took over the fourth spot in the 24T. From there to the finish it was a futile battle to catch John Saathoff as he came home first. Harker was second with Hurt third and Wayman fourth.

He said “I’m finally getting up to full speed. I’m at about 70 percent, so I guess I’m doing pretty good. I turned 60 3 weeks ago and my son Jaxon turned 21 today. I was hoping that he was going to get the win, but I’ll take it. Roger has been doing a really good job on the track this year. Hopefully, we can keep getting some more cars and the fans will keep coming out. Racing is such a great sport!! Let’s shoot for another 3 or 4 wins this year”. John’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Northeast Auto, Speedway Motors, I-70 Auto Auction, Independent Equipment and Lineweber Dirt Works.

The finale for the evening was the main event for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Andrew Jackson held the lap 1 lead with Jake Galusha’s 8B, the 15V of Cole Vanderheiden and Tim Hilfiker’s 20 close behind. Jason Danley passed Hilfiker on lap 2 to put the 4X into fourth place. Lap 5 saw Joey Danley’s 14 and the 1B of Brandon Horton get together in turn 4 but keep on going. However, the yellow flag had flown to slow the action. Trevor Grossenbacher jumped up to third in the 35 on lap 8. Galusha moved to the lead the next time around with Jason Danley in third and Jackson fourth. Clint Benson then joined the fray the next time around to put 100 into fourth. Jason Danley vaulted up to the lead shortly after. Bret Klabunde spun in turns 1 & 2 with 7 laps remaining for another caution period. Grossenbacher moved up to second on the restart but lost the spot to Galusha with 2 laps left. 1 circuit remained when Maxwell Roseland’s 84 and Klabunde stopped at the bottom of turn 4, setting up a Green/White/Checkered finish to the race. The final 2 laps saw no change in the top 4 with Jason Danley first, Galusha second, Grossenbacher third and Benson fourth.

Jason’s win came from the 9th spot on the starting grid. He stated “Third night out you know, a win is great. Especially after last week! We just weren’t any good then. We don’t know why; it was just one of those nights. I got a really good start tonight. We got lucky and started on the bottom. We got up to fourth on the second lap. The 5A was setting a good pace and I couldn’t get a good run on him. I was afraid that we’d get bottlenecked and someone would go sailing by. Trevor did on the high side, but about that time I got back into third and back by Trevor. I didn’t know where to go, but I didn’t see him again so I stayed down on the bottom. I have to give Jake credit because I kind of squeezed him a little bit getting into three but he was setting such a good pace that I couldn’t get around him in the corners. He went in there a little wide and didn’t try to drive down on me. I really appreciate that. He’s a great racer and I had to take my one chance when I got it because I don’t think I could have gotten by him otherwise. I want to send out a big thank you to my family. My brother and Joey both help me out. Mom and Dad have both supported me for 35 plus years. Now my wife and daughter help me out and support me. It’s just a family thing”. Jason’s sponsors include Speedway Engines, Speedway Shocks and Climatech Heating and Air.
