Richards, Vanderheiden, Andersen, Williams and Schouten are victorious at the American Dream

Richards, Vanderheiden, Andersen, Williams and Schouten are victorious at the American Dream

By Greg Soukup

Thanks to some afternoon clouds and a nice southerly breeze, the weather guessers were wrong about the extreme heat for American Dream Night presented by Nebraska Realty, Nebraska Septic and Hippo Equipment.

Since last week got rained out, extra money was up for grabs in all classes. The top IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature prize was boosted to $1300 thanks to Nebraska Septic. The FAB402 Steel the Show and the Gatsby Party On awards were both doubled to $200 and Ripp Racing kicked in a $50 prize to a mystery position in the Valentinos IMCA Hobby Stock A Main.

The young fans also got a chance to fatten their piggy banks with a $1500 Money Grab on the front stretch at intermission sponsored by One Shot Auto Repair.

There were two serious incidents in the preliminary action. The first coming in the first heat for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver. Battling for position in turns 3 and 4, Cody Ledger’s #47 right rear wheel contacted the left rear tire of the #91 of Adam Gullion, sending Ledger flipping. He was not seriously injured, but his mount was too badly damaged to continue. The other was also in the IMCA Racesaver Sprints.

Austin Boucher’s 5A, the 5J of Jakob Boucher, Jeff Watts in the 66 and the 13T of Tyler Jackson led lap 1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature. Jakob Boucher snagged the lead on lap 2 with Jackson moving up to third. Travis Patterson put the 17TK into fourth the next time around. 1 more lap was in the books when Jackson passed Austin Boucher for second with Patterson following him into third the next circuit. Lap 6 saw contact between the 3T of Nate Thompson and Tommy Etherton’s 24T resulted in a flat tire for Thompson and Etherton, causing both to slow and bring out the caution flag. Both Thompson and Etherton headed to the pits. Marty Steinbach used the restart to move the 5ELI up to fourth past Austin Boucher. Gary Laflin cracked the top 4 with 8 to go in his #9, passing Steinbach for the position. Jeff Watts spun his #66 in turn 4 with 7 laps left. The restart saw Jakob Boucher spun out in turn 2 collecting Steinbach, Patterson and Laflin. That resulted in a top 4 of Jackson, Nick Beckman in the 22 with a flat right front tire, the 1C of Scott Carlson and Arie Schouten’s 99RE. Schouten passed Carlson on the restart for third and advanced to second the next lap. There were just 3 circuits remaining when the red lights were lit in the corners when fans were found to be standing outside of the catch fence in turn 3, bringing a rousing set of boos from the crowd as they were escorted back to safety. Carlson passed Beckman on the restart to take over the third spot. Jackson slid slightly coming out of turn 4 on the final circuit, allowing Schouten to edge him by a nose at the flag stand. Carlson was moved back 2 positions in post-race tech after being found with an illegal frame height. The top 4 were Schouten, Jackson, Beckman and the 36 of Dana Deeke.

This was Schouten’s second victory of the season in a stock car after moving up to the class, starting outside row 9. He said “That was an exciting one! I just kept chipping away at it and things just kind of fell into place. Cautions helped set me up to be right there and things played out in my favor. I kind of struggled there at the beginning, searching around to figure out where it was going to open up. Then the track came to life on the bottom as it always seems to. The bottom started to go away so I had to search again but cautions helped guide me when everyone was going to either the top or bottom. I found something on the top of 3 and 4, because I was really struggling on the bottom there. The top seemed to be my saving grace. I was really just hoping for a hard charger award and a top 10, but when there was a big pileup on that restart I was sitting in fourth, so I said to myself ‘I might as well try doing something with this’. I was trying to chip away at the points and try to get to the front. I want to thank my fiancé, her sister and the whole Cook family, my crew guy Carter and everyone else who help make this thing run”. Arie’s sponsors include Dave’s United Roofing and Siding, The Lovers Collective and Photography, Turn 1 Design, RE Racing, Harris Decals, Buxton Photography, Upstream Concrete, B&B Racing Chassis and KS Engineering.

Lap 1 of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod Feature saw Shawn Hein’s 5H out front with McLain Reed second in the 44, the 11H of Nick Morris third and Amber Cool’s 9 fourth. Reed got past Hein for the lead on lap 2 and Noah Williams passed Cook to put the 27W into fourth and jumped up to second the next time around. Adam Vrbka jumped the 7V up to third on lap 4 with Derek Hall advancing to fourth. Williams moved under and past Reed with 8 circuits left to grab the lead. Vrbka grabbed second from Reed with just 3 to go. Williams held on to win by 1.8 seconds, Vrbka was second, Reed third and Hall fourth.

Noah stated “It’s been a while. I was hoping it would be earlier than July, but we’ll take it. It seems like the bad luck is behind us after struggling early on in the season. We started fifth and worked our way up pretty quick. I just kept it on the bottom. We were pretty good down there, but were tight up on top. So, I just kept running the bottom and picked off a couple cars early and stayed down there. I ran the middle in 3 and 4 and held on to pick up the win”. Noah’s sponsors include Leiting Motorsports, BTS Detailing, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 129, The Load Shop, Amberly Dental. The team also supports Little Giants SIOD Foundation.

Dustin Andersen was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A in the 8A, followed closely by Sean Manning’s X52, the 3T of Nate Thompson and Chad Andersen in the 8C. Chad Andersen passed Thompson for third on lap 2, moved to second the next time around and passed his brother Dustin for the lead on lap 4. Jake Neal put the 21 into fourth place on lap 6 and advanced to third the following lap. Bob Zoubek moved his 5S into fourth place on lap 9. Manning looped it in turn 1 with 6 to go, allowing Shawn Harker to advance to fourth in the #40 on the restart. There were no changes in the top 4 with Chad Andersen winning, Dustin Andersen second, Neal third and Harker holding onto fourth.

This was Chad’s second victory of the season after having won at the Icebreaker Challenge to kick off the year. It also gave him back the points lead for the season. I kidded Chad that he might have let his brother Dustin win, to which he replied “Naaah! He got one a couple of weeks ago, and since we haven’t had a weekly win here yet we thought it was our time. We’ve had some bad luck. We’ve been running good, but not great. We needed a couple of monkeys off of our backs I guess. We had some part failures here and there but managed to finish. But when we have a car that can compete for the win, it shows like tonight. The heat race and feature showed we’re back on point. Hopefully we can finish the year out strong and keep finishing top 5. Wins are good, and that’s what we shoot for, but top 5 is what my standard is and what I feel we are capable of. I want to thank Andy for all of his time and help. With business being so busy, and the kids’ baseball it’s hard to dedicate as much time as I do in the shop. But, with baseball ending the kids are starting to help out more in the shop. My 1 year old is a handful, so my fiancé is taking care of him and doing all that she can; it’s a big help. All of the work that people like Jake and April and Ben and Cassie and so many others do for us. Of course, all of my sponsors do so much for us”. Chad’s sponsors include Five Star Frameworks, Utility Trenching, Bobcat of Omaha, Countryside Contracting, Flatfoot Trucking, Logeman Carquest Automotive, Only Pro Decals, Paddy McGowens, Dinkers Bar and Grill, AFCO Shocks, Landrum Springs and Jerovitz Motorsports.

Next up for their A Main were the Valentinos IMCA Hobby Stocks. Robert Salts led lap 1 in his 10-4 with Kirsten Bruce second in the 4K, Neil Pella’s 3A third and Troy Dowty putting the 17 into fourth. Pella passed Bruce for second on lap 2 and Dillon Richards passed Dowty for fourth in the 24R. Richards then got past Dowty for third and Tyler Smith also passed Dowty to put the 22T into fourth. Ian Roschewski spun his #2 in turn 4 on lap 5 collecting the 10 of Brad Schreiner. Roschewski and the 72T of Tyler Ramsey spun to a stop on the restart and the yellow flag was brought out again. One lap after the ensuing restart saw Pella snag the lead and Richards move up to second as Salts fell back to third. Schreiner and Roschewski spun in turn 4 on lap 9. Although it was Roschewski’s second spin, race officials allowed him to tag the field since he made no contact. Smith and the 46 of Ryan Gilland passed Salts to take over third and fourth on the restart. Richards nosed out Pella for the lead the next time around but lost the lead back to him the following circuit. Richards again took over the top spot with 9 to go. Ramsey spun to the infield with 5 laps remaining for another caution. Richards held on for the victory with Pella second, Smith third and Gilland fourth. Gilland refused an engine claim by Troy Dowty and was disqualified, moving the 41 of Adam Wasserman’s 41 into fourth place.

This was Dillon’s fifth win of the 2024 season at Eagle Raceway after starting 10th. I congratulated Dillon on yet another great run, to which he replied ”We’ll take it, that’s for sure. We rode around in second for quite a while before I decided that I better change my line and get to going. The track was smooth tonight and I made the bottom work for me. There was a cushion up top, slick in the middle and moisture on the bottom  to make for some great racing tonight”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Extreme Motorsport, Brock Ackerman, Brian Jurgens, Ben Tart Construction, Dad, Johnny Thomas Racing, Nelson Tree Service, S and L Trenching, Jer’s Restoration and Fabrication, Cat’s Fireworks, Freese Farms, Inline Healing, The Rail Rocks, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, In Loving Memory JR Craig-Denise, Troy Cepak, Popeye Engines & Carbs, Landrum Performance Springs, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Backspin Entertainment and Aero Race Wheels.

The finale for the evening was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Lap 1 went to the 4W of Nate Weiler, with Brett Combs’ 4, the 53L of Ty Ledger and Jake Galusha in the 8G hot on his push bumper. Ledger passed Combs for second on lap 4 with Galusha following him into third. Cole Vanderheiden also got around Combs on lap 6 to put the 15V into fourth. Galusha passed Ledger for second on lap 9 for second with Vanderheiden moving to third the next lap. Alex Salzman spun his 2A out in turn 2 on lap 12, bringing out the caution flag and negating a 3 second lead for Weiler. Vanderheiden moved up to second on the restart with Jason Danley advancing to third the next circuit in the 4X. Danley passed Vanderheiden with 10 to go but the move was called back when Tyler Hendrickson spun the 14T at the bottom of turn 2. The restart saw Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into fourth. The red lights came on in the corners the next lap when the 63 of Jack Thomas flipped in turns 3 and 4. He walked away but his car was towed to the pits. Vanderheiden snagged the lead on the restart with Grossenbacher jumping up to second, Weiler falling to third with Danley fourth. Danley passed Weiler for third the following circuit. Ty Ledger flipped in turns 1 and 2 with 8 to go after contact with the 91 of Adam Gullion. He was okay, but his car was done for the night. Galusha moved back up to fourth on the restart. Danley advanced to second with 5 to go as Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth the next lap. Danley passed Vanderheiden with 2 to go for the lead. The 2 made contact in turn 3 on the final circuit with Danley hopping Vanderheiden’s left rear and spinning to the infield. Grossenbacher made a mad slide job on Vanderheiden in turn 4 but failed to hold on. Vanderheiden won, Grossenbacher finished second, Wayman moved up to third with Galusha coming home fourth.

This was Cole’s first win at America’s Home Track after several years of trying. He related “Oh yeah, it’s been a long time coming. Over the past 3 years we’ve been second, had thirds and fourths all year. It just feels amazing to finally get a win here at Eagle”. I asked him about the final lap of the race, to which he replied “That’s the longest lap I’ve ever experienced in my 3 years of racing. Going down the back stretch I couldn’t see him. I hopped his wheel going into 3, but luckily my car didn’t break and I didn’t pop a tire. I kept going into 4 and Trevor threw a nasty massive slide job on me in 4 but I turned down on him to get the win. We’ve got so many great people that help out with our team. I have to thank my Mom and Dad. They’ve been there for me all of my life, taking me to every race, racing go karts and now it’s finally paid off”. Cole’s sponsors include Bradco Companies, Twisted Thunder Fireworks, Chariots 4 Hope, Josh Flanagan,  Gina V Physical Therapy, Arose Mental Health, Vanderheiden Trucking, Young Chiropractic, Electric Express, 316 Strategy Group.

Monday is a special evening at Eagle Raceway as the Lucas Oil Late Models invade America’s Home Track, presented by Malvern Bank. This is the very first time that the tour has visited Eagle and hopefully there are many more stops here in the future. Also on the card are the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars.

Front gates open at 5 PM with adult admission being $35, youths 6-12 are $15 with children 5 and under free. Hot laps start at 5:30 with racing kicking off at 6:30 with racing at 6:30.
