Steinbach, Armstrong, Gilland, Andersen & Galusha win at Eagle’s High Bank Showdown

Steinbach, Armstrong, Gilland, Andersen & Galusha win at Eagle’s High Bank Showdown

By Greg Soukup

After 3 blazingly hot days of 100 degree plus heat  drenching rain Saturday morning cooled off the temperature to the mid-80’s as the Lincoln Stars and High Noon Sun Dips presented High Banks Showdown at Eagle Raceway. That same rain presented a huge problem for the crack track prep team, but they managed to provide a great racing surface for the competitors.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing action.

Jeremy Down led the first lap of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature in the 6, followed by Max Harder’s 34, the 5B of Matt Boucher and Marty Steinbach in the 5ELI. Boucher and Steinbach both moved up one spot on lap 2 for second and third. The next time around Boucher passed Down for first. Steinbach also got past Down on lap 7 to grab second. There were 10 circuits remaining when the yellow flag flew when Jerod Bussen spun out in turn 4. That erased a 3.6 second lead by Boucher.  Nate Thompson took over the fourth spot on the restart in the 3T and moved up to third the following lap. Dylan Haney put the 12X into fourth the next time around. A debris caution with 7 to go slowed the action again. With 5 laps left Haney slowed and pulled to the infield with a flat right front tire, moving Dillon Richards’ 24R up to fourth. With just 3 laps left Boucher slid high in turn 2, allowing Steinbach to pass him on the low side. Thompson followed Steinbach into second as Boucher fell to third. Richards also got by Boucher to take over second place the following circuit. The final change in the top 4 came on the final lap as Dan Jackson put the 3 into fourth, making the top 4 Steinbach, Thompson, Richards and Jackson.

It was a double celebration for Marty as he also became a Grandfather Thursday and he credited his daughter for the good luck helping him to the victory. This was Steinbach’s first stock car win after previously being a winner in the Sportmod division. He said “It was a very good run. Matt pushed up and I got under him. He said he had to hit the brakes, and I apologized to him for that. I wish he was here with me right now”. Steinbach’s sponsors include Eli Enterprises, B&T Electric and B&B Stock Cars by Kelly Shryock. He joked that possibly this win would garner him more sponsorships.

James Hines’ 31R, the 9 of Amber Cook, Bobby Draper’s 62 and the 31S of Jacob Swanson were out front after 1 lap of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A. Gary Saathoff made a huge move on lap 2, taking over third after starting eighth, moving Draper to fourth. Adam Armstrong passed Draper the next time around, putting the 6A into fourth. Cook took over the lead on lap 5 and Saathoff also got past Hines for second the following lap with Armstrong moving up to third. Lap 8 saw the 47 of 4Z of Zane Woodman spin to a stop at the bottom of turn 2 for a caution. At that time, it was Cook, Saathoff, Hines and Armstrong. Armstrong passed Hines for third on lap 9 and got by Saathoff for second with 10 to go as Drake Bohlmeyer snagged fourth in the 24. Armstrong passed Cook for the lead the following circuit with Saathoff passing Cook for second after another lap. Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth place with 7 circuits left but fell back to fifth the next time around as Bohlmeyer moved to third. With 5 to go Vrbka again advanced to fourth and passed Bohlmeyer for third the following circuit. At the checkers it was Armstrong, Saathoff, Vrbka and Bohlmeyer.

Adam’s win came from 10th on the starting grid, allowing him to retain his points lead. He stated “I really needed that win. It’s been a rough go this year. I won opening night, and we’ve had a lot of seconds and thirds. We needed this win after last week when we finished seventeenth. The car was good and the track had a lot of character after all the rain we got but it went through the ruts pretty good. I can’t say enough about tonight! It gave us a little momentum going into the final month of the season and we need it. I want to thank my aunt Bonnie, my Mom and Denny, my Dad. Also, my crew Todd and Jacob and of course my girlfriend Katie”. Adam’s sponsors include Theron Ahlman from Avid Realty, Jet Racing, Icon Pistons, S&L Trenching, Brookelyn’s Hair and Replacement, Southeast Pipe and Rod, Scavenger Racing and Tracy Motorsports.

The 21X of Josh Blumer, Sean Manning’s X52, Chad Andersen in the 8C and Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z were the top 4 after 1 lap of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified main. Lap 2 saw Andersen take second and Anthony Roth put the 60IV into fourth. Roth moved past Manning the next time around to snag the third spot. Clint Homan put the 27 into fourth on lap 6 but lost the spot back to Ziegenbein shortly thereafter. Andersen and Roth moved up to first and second with just 7 circuits left, moving Blumer back to third. Homan again took fourth and later advanced to third with 7 to go. Andersen and Roth swapped the lead over and over with Andersen holding onto the top spot each time.  Homan advanced to third with 3 laps left but Manning spun in turn 2 negating the pass. Homan used the restart to move up to third as Mike Densberger put the 81 into fourth. Blumer and Ziegenbein spun into the pit entrance road the next lap for a final caution. That set up a green/white/checkered finish with the final top 4 being Andersen, Roth, Homan and Densberger.

This was Chad’s second W this season. He stated “It’s been a while. Just bad luck most of the year. We’ve had a lot of things go wrong and not many go right. Hopefully, we got all of the bad luck out of the way because we’ve got just 4 more weeks to go. Hopefully we can end up the season on a good note. We started fourth because our points average hasn’t been very good lately. We were up there decent and cut a tire down last week then spun out with 2 laps to go running fifth the week before. We had 2 bad shocks on the car that we didn’t catch but we got those fixed so now the car is back where it should be and we should be able to run up front. Big thanks to my fiancé Logan and Jace and Andy”. Chad’s sponsors include Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Bobcat of Omaha, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting, Paddy McGown’s Pub and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logeman Auto Parts and Machine, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decaling, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, Continental Battery Systems, Jerovetz Motorsports, Ben and Kathy and Jake and April.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks main event saw Nick Jensen’s 48J in the lead with Kenny Roberts’ 69 second, Brad Schreiner third in the 10 and the 13T of Tyler Jackson fourth. Lap 2 Roberts passed Jensen for the lead as Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth place. Kile Casteel’s 18K came to a halt at the top of turns 1 & 2 the next time around and went off on the hook. Schreiner and Carter both moved up a spot on the restart for second and third. Josh Martinez also got past Jensen on lap 6 to put the 00J into fourth. Ryan Gilland took over fourth place with 10 to go as Schreiner moved to the lead. The next lap saw a caution for debris in turns 1 & 2. Ryan Gilland jumped up to third on the restart in the 46 with Martinez retaining fourth. Gilland advanced up to second the next time around. 6 to go saw Carter again move to fourth. 2 laps later there was debris on the track causing another caution. Carter moved back to fourth on the restart when Gilland passed him. Martinez also got past Carter with 8 laps left and advanced to third with 6 to go as Carter moved past Roberts for the fourth spot. More debris in turn 1 with 4 to go slowed the action one more time.  Carter moved up to third with 3 to go. Coming out of turn 4 on the final lap Gilland grabbed the lead making the top 4 Gilland, Schreiner, Carter and Martinez.

This win was Ryan’s third on the 2023 season. He related “We started sixth row outside and it definitely took awhile to get up towards the front. It was a very racy fast track. A few times going into one and two I couldn’t quite steer because my front end was off the ground, but it was kind of fun! I knew I had to be a little better than I had been when I caught Brad just to get up beside him. It did work out on the last lap when I got beside him coming out of turn 2. I knew I could get a pretty decent run off of turn 4 if I hit my marks and could keep it straight. I want to thank everybody who helps out with the car, especially my crew who is here for me every week; Murray, Mike and Jeff. Of course, all of my fans, my wife and kid”. Ryan’s sponsors include Concrete Corrections, Paul Scholl Construction, Lincoln Winelectric, Bridget and Greg Thornberg, JTR Logistics, Burrows Tracts and Real Estate, Gilland Electric, Gilland Builders, Ironwood Builders, Extreme Motorsports and Jet Racing.

Jake Galusha put the 8B in the lead on the first circuit of the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature with the 77 of Bret Klabunde, Cole Vanderheiden’s 15V and the 5A of Andrew Jackson rounding out the top 4. Klabunde passed Jackson for second on lap 2 with Vanderheiden moving up to third and Shayle Bade’s 03 taking over fourth. Vanderheiden advanced 1 more spot on lap 3 to take second. Gunnar Pike got around Bade for fourth on lap 4 in the #25 but lost the spot back to Bade on lap 6. Bade advanced to third the next time around but bobbled, allowing Klabunde to regain the spot. Pike again got around Bade 2 laps later as Vanderheiden took over the lead from Galusha. Bade continued her battle with Pike, taking back fourth on lap 11 but lost it back to him again the next time around. Galusha got past Vanderheiden for the lead with 12 circuits left with Pike moving to third the following lap. Galusha tagged the wall with 8 laps remaining but held Vanderheiden off to retain first place. Vanderheiden closed to Galusha’s push bumper with 3 to go in lapped traffic but Galusha managed to hold him off for the win. Vanderheiden was second, Pike third and Klabunde fourth.

This was Jake’s first victory at Eagle Raceway. He said “I think we just got lucky in lapped traffic. I think Cole had a pretty good race car. He showed me the line and I used it. He’s a great young driver and I hope to watch him race for many years. Turns 1 and 2 on the top was pretty treacherous and you had to decide before you got to 1 whether you were going to save it through 1 & 2 and then tackle the lapped cars in 3 & 4. I tried going up top a couple of times to pass lapped cars and I think that’s what got me the win. I want to thank Bobby and Lynette Becker, my car owners and my wife and kids for continuously supporting me and all of the people who put in so much work to make this possible”. Jakes sponsors include Graves, Access Speed, Engler Machine and Tool, Zach Woods at Speedway Motors and Mike Boston at Eagle Motorsports.

There was Hooptie Hockey after the races were through. If you’ve never seen it before, check out our Facebook page of the website.
