Stutzman, Carter, Harr, Danley & Hurt win at the Kick your Boots Up Event
By Greg Soukup
The fans were late showing up to Kick Your Boots Night presented by Platte Valley Equipment and Pepsi Cola of Lincoln last evening at Eagle Raceway. That was probably due to the heat and humidity. Both went away as the evening progressed but the racing action turned up the heat on the track.
I’ve always said that one of the best, if not THE best part of doing what I do is interviewing first time winners and those who have waited a long time to get another victory notch on their belts. I had the pleasure of doing both last night.
No serious incidents occurred during the preliminary racing.
Jeremy Down led the first lap of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature in his #6 with the 9 of Gary Laflin, Bab Ruisinger in the 7 and Matt Boucher’s 5B rounding out the top 4. Marty Steinbach jumped all the way to third on lap 2 in the 5ELI. The yellow flag was thrown on lap 4 as Jerod Bussen’s 71JJ stopped on the front stretch. Steinbach advanced to second on the restart and Shane Stutzman put the 22S into fourth place. Ruisinger’s 7 came to a halt at the bottom of turns 1 & 2 the next time around after contact with Laflin for another caution. Stutzman advanced to third on the restart with Nate Thompson putting the 3T into fourth. Stutzman continued his run the next lap, moving to second before grabbing the lead after another circuit as Thompson moved up to third. At that time, the top 4 were Stutzman, Down, Thompson and Boucher. Dan Jackson put the #3 into fourth with 8 to go with Thompson advancing to second when Down slowed dramatically. From there to the checkers the top 4 remained unchanged with Stutzman winning, Thompson second, Boucher third and Jackson fourth.
This was Shane’s second win in 2023 at Eagle Raceway. I mentioned that it took him that it didn’t take long for him to get to the top 4, to which he said “I started ninth and just started working my way forward there on the bottom and then everybody else started running the bottom so I decided to put her on the top side and let her eat. It worked out! I want to thank my pit crew, Roger and Dwight for their help”. Shane’s sponsors include Jackson Friesen Construction, Bob’s Service, Union Bank and Trust, Goldfuss Racing Fab, Troyer Concrete, Wergin’s Lawn Service, ProCut Tires, B&B Chassis, Skytop Towers, Lewis Automotive, Nielsen Blasting and Imperial Manufacturing.
Tyler Harr put the 21T out front on the first circuit of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod finale followed by the 62 of Bobby Draper, Derek Hall in the 44D and Gary Saathoff’s 96. Hall moved past Draper on lap 2 for second as Shawn Pospisil put the 6SJ into fourth place but Trevor Noonan’s 66 spun in turn 4 after contact with another car. That caused a caution. Lap 3 saw Ryan Arbogast spin the #2 in turn 3. Matt Andrews had nowhere to go and hit Arbogast, sending the 22 of Matt Andrews rolling into turn 4. He was not seriously injured but his car was towed to the pits after it was righted. The top 4 at the time were Harr, Draper, Hall and Saathoff. Adam Armstrong hit the front stretch wall on lap 5 and ended up riding it to near the track exit in turn 1. He went to the pits to replace a flat right front tire before rejoining the field. Saathoff got loose coming off of turn 4 on lap 6, collecting the 24 of Drake Bohlmeyer and Pospisil. Hall moved up to second on the restart but lost the spot back to Draper the following circuit as McLain Reed took fourth in the 44. Joe Feyen put the 25X of Joe Feyen into fourth on lap 6. The next time around Hall again moved around Draper for second and Josh Pfeifer put the 33J into fourth. Shawn Davis looped the 77 coming out of turn 4 after contact with Pospisil with 10 to go for yet another caution and Pospisil was sent to the rear of the field. Hall and Harr made contact going down the backstretch with Hall spinning to a halt. The race was called official at that point and was scored on the crossings from the previous lap with Harr being awarded the win, Hall second, Draper third and Pfeifer fourth.
This was Tyler’s first victory at Eagle Raceway in this, his rookie season. He related “It was a little rough there at the end, but stuff happens I guess. I had a driver come across my nose. Just wrong place, wrong time. That triggered the whole thing and I was surprised that they gave it to me! I didn’t know who it was going to either”. I inquired about when he started racing and he said “I started when I was 14. I raced a sportmod for the first few years, running about 8 nights a year. Nothing crazy because I had football and other sports going on. Then in 2020 I got a Late Model with a crate and raced that for 2 years before switching to a Super Late Model last year. I decided to put this car back together because I didn’t want to have to drive 140 miles to find a track to race at. I’m glad I did because we can run the same tires all year and they’re about $60 cheaper I have to thank my Dad and Momma T, my Grandpa David and Ryan Sample”. Tyler’s sponsors include Torqup and Blended Collision.
The first lap of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A was led by Josh Blumer in the 21X with Clint Homan’s 27, the 24T of Terry Hurt and Dan Jackson in the 3 close behind. Homan took over the lead on lap 2. Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth on lap 5. Chad Andersen’s 8C slowed in turn 3 & 4 for a caution with 10 to go for a caution. Hurt and Wayman both took advantage of the restart to move up one spot each. Mike Densberger cracked the top 4 the next time around in his #81. Hurt passed Homan for the lead with 8 to go. The next circuit saw James Peterson loop the #22 coming out of turn 4 and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Densberger moved up to third with 5 to go. Debris on the track the next lap slowed the action again. Homan moved back up to second with 3 to go. The final change in the top 4 came when Wayman passed Densberger for second with 2 laps left. The final top 4 were Hurt, Wayman, Densberger and Homan.
It’s been quite a while since Terry graced victory lane. He was all smiles as he said “You know, it’s been a long time coming. God! I love Eagle Raceway!! What a great place to race. A lot of fans and a great racetrack. This has always been my home track. I started racing here when I was 21 years old when Craig Cormack owned the track. I’ve raced a lot of years on this track and have a lot of wins here but it’s been a looong stretch since I’ve gotten one. I am so proud to get another win here. This is it for me. I have a few weeks left racing here, racing out the season then going to Supernationals at Boone and then that’s it for us. I’ve done it and done it, met a lot of incredible people but this is the end. I started wondering if I could or couldn’t win but we got it done tonight. Damn, I’m happy! Those first couple of laps was a challenge but I fell into place and I got a couple of breaks and got up to third. I was watching Homan to see where he was running and how he was running his line. I watched that and then thank God the caution came out with 10 to go. I told myself ‘This is our chance. Let’s go do it’. I decided ‘Let’s go win this thing’. I changed my line a little bit and moved around a little bit until I found a good line that was going to work. I felt like we were pretty fast and when I passed Homan I felt pretty good”. I asked about Terry’s sponsors and he said “My sponsors is usually me, but there’s PSC Construction; Dennis is an incredible man and he’s helped us the last couple of years. T Hurt Construction has always been on our cars and Andy Hearn the owner supports us. C&H Concrete Construction also; we feel we’re the best concrete company in Omaha”.
Dave Carter grabbed the lead on the first lap of Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Main event in the 2C, Nick Jensen put the 46J into second, John Martinez’s 00J held third and Jeff Watts rounded out the top 4 in the 66. Martinez moved up a spot to second on lap 2 with Watts following him in to third. Cody Muth/s Z00M slowed on the front stretch the next lap for another caution. Cole Krichau put the 30K into the fourth spot on the restart but lost the position back to him the next lap. Debris in turn 4 saw the yellow flag displayed again on lap 7. Adam Wasserman moved up to fourth in the 41 as Jensen headed to the pits with a flat left rear tire. Wasserman advanced to third with 10 to go. Kyle Gannon took over fourth with 7 laps left in the 66G. The final top 4 were Carter, Martinez, Wasserman and Gannon.
Dave’s last win came on June 24th and was followed by several bad weeks, including one where his racer was torn up in an accident. I asked him if this win made up for the bad weeks and he replied “Nope! It doesn’t make up for that but we’ll take it and keep on moving forward. I was going to be patient because I didn’t want to put myself in jeopardy or wreck another one, so we just played it safe for a couple of laps, split a couple of cars and moved on up. I started to see Martinez’s nose down on the bottom so I had to take away his line a little bit, pinch him down so I could get a good run off and he couldn’t get by me. We’re just having a little better luck this week. I want to thank my family and friends for all of the support each week”. Dave’s sponsors include Baker Boys Racing, Legit Chassis and T3 Chassis and Village Pointe Toyota.
The Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Feature’s first circuit had Brandon Horton’s 1B out front, the 8B of Jake Galusha second, Joey Danley third in the 14 and the 91 of Adam Gullion fourth. Galusha got past Horton for the lead on lap 3. Jordan Boston’s #11 slowed to a stop on lap 6 and was towed to the pits. The red flag was displayed for a medical emergency in the stands. Gullion was penalized 1 spot for jumping the start earlier, moving Gunnar Pike’s 25 to fourth. Danley grabbed second on the restart. Pike advanced to third on lap 8. Tyler Drueke moved his #12 into fourth 2 laps later and took over the third spot with 10 laps left. 4 to go saw Shon Pointer’s 20P tangle with Galusha, spinning both of them out. That moved Danley to the top spot, Drueke to second, Pike to third and Gullion regaining fourth. Trevor Grossenbacher passed Gullion on the restart, putting the 35 into fourth. The final top 4 were Danley, Drueke, Pike and Grossenbacher.
Joey has been splitting his time between racing his 360 and Eagle Raceway, but he said “This is our home track and always will be. It’s great to get a win anywhere, but it means more here. I got a little handicap tonight, starting in the second row. I don’t think I’ve ever started that far forward, so I thought that if I didn’t win it would be a big disappointment. I got lucky starting where I did and then I got lucky with whatever happened to Jake. I was catching him in traffic, but I don’t know if I could have caught him or not. I do think it’s about time some luck falls my way though. I chased Jake the whole race. He was really fast in clean air and I wasn’t going to catch him. The traffic really wasn’t slowing him down for a while. But then it got thicker and thicker and it slowed him up a little bit. Luckily, I got by that deal”. Joey’s sponsors include Nissen Hardwood Floors, Empire Fencing, Meyers Race Engines, MySalesman, The Wave, High Performance Lubricants and Onyx Digital Group.
Following the races, the traditional Hillbilly Slip ‘N Slide took place in turns 1 and 2.What could possibly be more fun than hurtling down the high banks of turns 1 and 2 on a gigantic plastic sheet soaked by a fire hose???
