Stutzman, Wasserman, Saathoff, Andrews & Danley are victorious at Eagle Raceway’s 1/3 Mile Smackdown
By Greg Soukup
The threat of precipitation kept some fans and teams away from the 1/3 Mile Smackdown at Eagle Raceway Saturday night, but those who showed up were treated to a truly great show. The action was moved along quickly, ending at 8:45 but that didn’t take away from the fantastic racing one bit.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.
The initial A Main was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Dylan Haney led the first lap in the 12X with Marty Steinbach’s 5ELI, the 9 of Gary Laflin and Eric Bartels in the 25B rounding out the top 4. Lap 3 saw a pileup in 1 & 2 collecting the 28 of Tim Horsham, Dan Jackson’s 3AM, Bartels and Boone Evans in the 4JR. Shane Stutzman took over the 4th spot in the 22S. Nick Beckman looped the 22 in turns 3 & 4. Beckman and Horsham both spun in 1 & 2 on the restart. Stutzman jumped up to second on the restart with Steinbach grabbing the lead and Casey Woken moving up to fourth. Woken advanced to third the next time around. Stutzman passed Steinbach for the lead with 7 to go. Woken also got around Steinbach with 5 to go. There were just 3 laps remaining when Cade Richards put the 1R into fourth. Richards moved up to third on the final circuit making the final top 4 Stutzman, Woken, Richards and Steinbach.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks rolled out next. The initial circuit saw Albert Kiihne loop the 85 in turn 4, causing a complete restart. Neil Pella led lap 1 in the 3A, followed by Adam Wasserman’s 41, the 26L of Brint Lemke and Dave Carter’s 2C close behind. Wasserman passed Pella on lap 2 for the lead with Carter moving up to third. Carter advanced to second on lap 4 with Tyler Jackson putting the 13T into fourth before taking over third the next time around. Roy Armstrong cracked the top 4 the following lap in his 6R. Jeff Ware passed Armstrong for fourth the next lap, putting the 83 into fourth. Ware advanced to third with 9 to go. Jackson went to the infield with 5 circuits left, allowing Pella to rejoin the top 4. Ware got up to second with 2 to go but couldn’t catch Wasserman. The final top 4 were Wasserman, Ware, Carter and Pella.
The action continued with the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified Feature. Jared Deterding looped the 13J on the start. When a lap was officially in the books John Saathoff’s 96J, the 96 of Jaxon Saathoff, Ryan Sample’s 97 and Justin Wulf in the 86 were the top 4. Rik Gropp’s 22V stopped in turn 1 on lap 2 to slow the action. Wulf used the restart to advance to third as Clint Homan put the 27 into fourth. Lap 4 saw Homan pass Wulf for third. Ryan Stopak looped the 1RS in turn 4 for another caution. Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth on the restart as Homan grabbed third. Brandon Verbeek looped the 4B the next lap and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Zoubek moved up to third on the restart. Jaxon Saathoff took over the lead with 10 to go and Zoubek passed John Saathoff for second with Homan retaining fourth. Chad Andersen passed Homan with 8 to go to put the 8C into fourth, lost the spot back to Homan 2 laps later but retook the position the next time around. Homan got fourth back with 2 to go but gave the spot up to Andersen the final circuit. The final top 4 were Jaxon Saathoff, Zoubek, John Saathoff and Andersen.
The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmods then took to the high banks. Matt Andrews’ 22, the 17 of Mary Hahn, Joe Feyen’s 25X and the 6SJ of Shawn Pospisil led the field back to the flag stand on lap 1. Adam Vrbka vaulted the 7V up to third on lap 2 putting Feyen in fourth. Vrbka passed Hahn for second the next time around. Feyen also got past Hahn the next lap, taking over the third spot as Trevor Noonan put the 66 into fourth. James Hines spun the 31R in turn 4 with 9 to go and headed to the pits after getting restarted. Shawn Harker got past both Feyen and Noonan on the restart to put the 40 into third but lost the spot to Cole Wayman in the 18W the next time around. Harker got back past Wayman the next lap before moving up to second with 5 to go, putting Vrbka third and Noonan fourth. Wayman got back to fourth the next circuit. Wayman moved up to third with 3 to go, putting Vrbka in fourth. The final top 4 being Andrews, Harker, Wayman and Vrbka.
Tim Hilfiker’s 20, the 5A of Andrew Jackson, Chase Weiler in the 0 and Mark Pace in the 57 were out front of lap 1 for the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Weiler moved past Jackson for second on lap 2 with Pace and the 4X of Jason Danley taking over third and fourth respectively. Danley moved up to second the next time around. Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth on lap 6. 3 laps later Jason Danley grabbed the lead from Hilfiker. Gunnar Pike’s 25G stopped at the top of turn 4 on lap 10. He went to the pits. Doug Lovegrove used the restart to put the 55 into fourth as Joey Danley advanced to third. 9 circuits remained when Jay Russell put the 76 into fourth. Joey Danley moved up to second with 5 laps left with Russell following him into third. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Jason Danley winning, Joey Danley second, Russell third and Hilfiker fourth.
With severe weather headed towards the track both the fans and teams headed out as quickly as possible, so it was not possible to obtain interviews with the winning drivers.
