Swarthout, Armstrong, Hiatt, Olsen & Boston win during Freedom Fest
By Greg Soukup
Saturday’s Freedom Fest, presented by Sam’s Club & Kaplan University saw a late-arriving crowd that turned out to be the best one of the year so far at Eagle Raceway. Couple that with nearly perfect weather and a great fireworks show following the racing action and hardly anyone could ask for more.
Dwight Carter’s 4u made contact with the 13 of Eric Reichwaldt in the third Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprint heat causing him to turn directly into the fourth turn wall. Carter walked away from the incident but his evening of racing was over.
The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature had Dustin Thayer’s 10T leading the first lap followed by the 7V of Adam Vrbka, Shelly Andersen’s 5S and the 23X of Steve Swarthout. Chris Langdale looped his #68 on the front stretch of lap 2 to slow the action. When the green flag dropped again Langdale, Mike Morton Jr.’s 71M and the 7 of Bob Ruisinger stopped in turn 1. Swarthout moved up to third on the restart and Shawn Harker also advanced to fourth in the 40. Anderson grabbed the lead on lap 4. Swarthout fell to fourth the next time around before going back into third and then second over the next two laps as Thayer regained the lead. That lead was short-lived however as Thayer’s racer went up in smoke on lap 10. That put Swarthout out front, Andersen second, Vrbka third and the 15 of Nathan Kobus fourth. Vrbka moved up to second with 8 to go and Joey Danley jumped into third in his #14 the next circuit as Harker remained in fourth. Andersen went to the pits that same lap. Harker spun with just 4 laps left, putting the 25B of Benji Legg fourth. Danley advanced to second with 3 to go and Legg moved past Danley for third with 2 left. The top four at the checkers were Swarthout, Danley, Legg and Vrbka.
This was Swarthout’s first victory in the 2013 season. “I want to dedicate this win to Isaac Porter, a young man who passed away from cancer. He always travelled with me, and that’s why I stopped in turn 1 after the race; that was where he always stood during the races” Swarthout related. He continued the interview by stating “Also I want the say that my son Drae will be getting his Ranger Scroll on the 12th. Just thinking about all that he’s been through helped push me through to get the win”. Lastly Swarthout said “I need to thank lots of people. Mike at Jet Racing, Schmidt Machine for this awesome motor and of course my pit crew”. Swarthout’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Schmidt Machine, Jet Racing and Performance by Maximum.
Next out on the high banks was the A Main for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Mark McKinney spun his #23 in 3 & 4 on lap 1. Dan Noonan in the 12, Travis Albracht’s 38A, the 6R of Roy Armstrong and Tim LaPointe in the 18 were the first four at the end of lap 1. Albracht & Armstrong both moved past Noonan on lap 3, only to have Noonan retake the lead the next time around. Tim Kozak spun his #29 in turns 3 & 4 on lap 5 and McKinney stopped in the infield of turn 4 also. At that time the top four were Noonan, Albracht, Armstrong and LaPointe. Lap 6 saw Albrecht again take the point with Mike Hansen’s 94 moving up to fourth. Armstrong moved up 1 spot on each of the next two laps to grab the lead. He then traded the lead with Noonan on each of the next 3 laps before Armstrong took it for good on lap 12. Hansen moved up to third with 6 to go. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Noonan, Hansen and Albracht.
Armstrong said “It was nice getting the year’s 2nd win tonight right before the 4th and my birthday. I owe it to my son Adam who works on the setup. We’ve been trying new things this year and we seem to have found it”. He also related “Thanks to Roger and Michelle for giving us this fantastic place to race. Also my pit crew John. But mostly to my girlfriend Jo for saying a prayer with me this morning”. Armstrong’s sponsors include B & D Motorsports and NEAPCO.
Phil Penney’s 21 was out front at the end of the first circuit of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified Feature followed by Chad Andersen’s 8C, Shane Hiatt’s 21H and the 86 of Justin Wulf. Hiatt passed Andersen on lap 2. Chevy Hadan jumped his #4 into third on lap 5 as the 1X of Chris Ableson took fourth. Ableson passed Hadan on lap 7 but Nate Thompson’s 3T stopped in turn 2. Wulf got back past Ableson on lap 8 and Hiatt took the lead the next time around. Ableson stopped in 4 with a flat right rear on lap 11. Hadan advanced to third on the restart and then took over second the next lap. Scott Bivens’ S56, the 81 of Mike Densberger and Thompson all came to a halt in turns 1 & 2 with 7 to go. The top 4 were Hiatt, Hadan, Penney and Wulf. Andersen and Wulf swapped fourth on the restart. Bob Zoubek looped the 5S in turns 1 & 2 with 5 laps left, and Ableson stopped in 1 & 2 on the restart. Penney passed Hadan on the restart. Tim Ward got the 4TW into fourth with 4 to go only to lose the spot to Dylan Smith’s 95 at the end of the race. Hiatt, Penney, Hadan and Smith were the top 4.
“I haven’t gotten a win here since 2010, and it’s really great to get this one. I want to thank Roger for the awesome track and all of the work that he and the crew put in to give us 2 lanes of racing every week. That’s why I love coming here; I can’t thank him enough” Hiatt said. He continued by stating “I had a good car tonight. It was rolling really good on the top, and I was super excited when I got out front”. He finished the interview by relating “Thanks to my mom and dad. Also to my brother Shawn for all of his hard work and to Kyle Shamp”. Shane’s sponsors include Roth Racing, Razor Chassis, Jono’s Motors, Benes Service, 3H Trucking, Knuth Farms J & K Motorsports, KC Auto Supply, Valish Daycare, Wetlands Bar & Grill, Want Trucking, Jones Racing, DSR, Integra Shocks & Springs and Danny Fuller from CPD Racing Products.
The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Main’s first lap leader was the 13 of James King with Larry Cronin’s 5, the 35H of Rick Hollandsworth and the20 of Sydney Yost close behind. Yost & Hollandsworth got together on lap 2 with Yost spinning out. That moved Tanner Schmitz’s 10 into the fourth spot. Matt Moyer moved his #29 up to the third position on the restart with the 25 of John Johnson taking fourth. King slowed dramatically on the restart putting Cronin out front as Ole Olsen had jumped up to third. Tim Horsham lost the right rear from his #3 on lap 4 and Moyer also went to the pits. At that time it was Cronin, Olsen, Johnson and the 51 of Amanda Rhiley. Olsen passed Cronin on lap 5. Mitchell Wachter’s #16 lost his right front tire with 7 to go. Schmitz moved back into fourth with 5 laps left. Cronin slowed with 3 circuits remaining, suffering from a flat tire. That moved Johnson to second, Schmitz to third and the 69 of Kenny Roberts to fourth. Rhiley regained fourth the next time around. Olsen came home first, Johnson second, Schmitz third and Rhiley fourth.
Olsen left before he could be interviewed.
Lastly, it was the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars out for their main event. Shayle Bade’s 03 led the first lap with Nick Bryan’s 52, the 14G of Gene Acklund and Matt Richards’ 44 rounding out the top 4. Mike Boston moved past Richards on lap 5 to take fourth and took the #51 to third 3 laps later. Lap 10 saw Ackulnd spin In turn 2 to put the 77D of Keith Dragoo in fourth. Lee Bowes spun his 73 in turn 2 on the restart. When the action resumed Boston grabbed the lead and Dan Satriano put the 95 into fourth. Satriano lost the fourth spot to the 18 of Terry Richards with 9 to go. Gregg Bolte’s 00 stopped on the back stretch with 7 laps remaining for the final caution of the evening. Richards got up to third with 6 circuits left. Satriano regained fourth with four to go, only to lose the position to the 100 of Clint Benson the next time around. As the final flag flew it was Boston, Bade, Richards and Benson.
“Another great track tonight, with 2 good racing grooves. You can’t beat that” Boston stated. He concluded by saying “All of the new drivers are doing a great job. They’re holding their lines, and staying out of trouble. The competition gets better every week and we’ll keep getting more cars too”. Boston’s sponsors include Moock Trucking, Johnson Farms and Woods Performance.
