Watts, Vanover, Nickolite, Homan & Armstrong win at Eagle Raceway Fun-Ganza
By Greg Soukup
Although rain cancelled the racing at Mini E Raceway on Friday, the track prep crew came through yet again so that Fun-Ganza, presented by Theron Ahlman from Modern Real Estate and Pepsi Cola could take place. A great crowd showed up and helped to raise just over $8000 through 50/50 donations for Tom Belsky who was severely injured last week.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.
First up for their A Feature were the A1 Iron/SANY IMCA Stock Cars. The action was stopped before it could really get started as the yellow lights were lit in the corners on lap 1 for debris in turn 4. When a lap was finally in the books, Terry Hurt’s 24T, the 30 of Jordan Grabouski, Nick Beckman’s 22 and Troy Duensing in the 3D led the field. Beckman moved to the lead on lap 2 with Kyle Vanover’s 19 Grabouski and Benji Legg in the 84 rounding out the top 4. Vanover passed Beckman the next time around to take the lead. Grabouski got past Beckman the following circuit with Shane Stutzman in the 22S moving up to fourth. Legg and Stutzman swapped positions twice over the next 2 laps. Lap 6 saw Matt Boucher’s 5B stop on the front stretch. Duensing looped it in 1 & 2 on lap 7 for another caution. Vanover and Grabouski made contact in turn 3 on the restart, causing severe damage to Grabouski’s mount and brining out the red flag. Grabouski was taken off the track on the wrecker but was not severely injured. That made the top 4 Vanover, Beckman, Stutzman and Legg. Stutzman advanced to second on the restart. Cade Richards took the fourth spot the next lap in the 1R and moved to third the following circuit. The final change in the top 4 came with 10 to go as Austin Brauner put his 10A into fourth. The top 4 at the checkers were Vanover, Stutzman, Richards and Brauner.
This was not only Kyle’s first feature victory at Eagle Raceway, but it also marked win #100 in his stock car career. Vanover said “I got to the lead, but then we had a string of yellows. On the second restart I bobbled on the bottom of turn 2 and Grabouski got a good run on me. I didn’t realize he was even there until we were wrecking. It definitely takes the fun out of something when you tear your stuff up, let alone that of a good friend. It was really surprising because I thought I was going to be put to the back for the contact with Jordan. Sitting there under the red, I was just hoping Jordan was okay; especially under a red like that because I couldn’t see what was happening. I couldn’t see how he ended up and since it was a red flag I figured he was upside down! Tonight was #100 though, and that was great. The first time I ever won here, and it was #100!! Eagle is definitely a lot of fun! The biggest thing is surviving. You have to finish to finish first. We did that tonight, but we almost didn’t.” Kyle’s sponsors include Green’s Plumbing and Heating, Big John’s Race Cars, Cadillac Chassis by Big Johnson, Speedway Shocks, Zach at Speedway Engines, Sardeson Racing, Sue at Salon Nuveau, Exotic Customs and Andon Burns Construction.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next. Lap 1 saw Jeff Watts out front in the 66 with the 7 T of Troy Dowty, Kyle Schamp in the 2K and Dave Carter’s 2C close behind. Neill Pella vaulted his 3L into third on lap 3. Roy Armstrong took over the fourth spot in the 6R the next time around. The yellow flag came out the next circuit for debris in turns 3 & 4. Dowty took his car to the pits due to a loose rear bumper but rejoined the action. That made the top 4 Watts, Pella, Armstrong and Carter. On the restart Armstrong and Pella got together allowing Schamp to take second, Carter to move to third and Ryan Gilland to move to fourth in the 46. Gilland advanced to third the next time around and passed Schamp with 8 to go for second. With 7 laps remaining Sal Hernandez put the 04 into third dropping Armstrong to fourth. There were just 3 laps left when Armstrong moved to third but lost the spot back to Hernandez on the final circuit. That made the top 4 Watts, Gilland, Hernandez and Armstrong.
This marked Watts’ first Eagle Raceway victory. Watts related “Finally!! It’s been a while. We made a few changes on the car this week. I talked to Jamie at Charger Chassis who built the car, and he gave me some great information. We got it scaled up a little different and went out there and the car just almost drove itself. I thought the track was really good tonight. Roger and everybody who has been working on the track and the officials have been doing a hell of a job all year. It’s always good racing here and that’s why we drive up from Beatrice every week! I need to thank my wife Jana and all my family. Also, my crew; Brittany, Ray, and Pres. I want to give a shout out to the fans who come out every week because if it wasn’t for them, we couldn’t be here doing what we love”. Jeff’s sponsors include Charger Chassis, Demon Decals, Husker Health and Rehab, Sonic, Weyer Repair, Barnard Mower and Repair, Eliker Motorsports, Goldfuss Motorsports, Schmidt Machine, Kotchulookin Grafix, Maxons, Browns Shoe Fit, VanWinkle Masonry, John’s Muscle Cars, Sardeson Racing, Escape Band, Julie’s Hot Dogs, Garrison Law, Van’s Waterproofing, La Herradura Mexican Grill and Slezac Racing.
The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds then took to the track for their A Main. Clint Homan led the first circuit in the 27 followed by the 21 of Josh Blumer, Bob Zoubek’s 5S and the V22 of Rik Gropp. Justin Wulf passed Gropp on lap 2 to put the 86 into fourth but clipped the tire on the inside of turn 1 the following lap, putting Gropp back into fourth. Zoubek moved up to second with 14 to go. Ryan Jenkins cracked the top 4 with 8 to go in the 6. The final time around saw Jordan Grabouski jump to third in the 30. The final top 4 were Homan, Zoubek, Grabouski and Blumer.
“Hopefully the bad luck is gone for good now! The season has not started off the way we wanted it to, for sure. We were having a fueling issue, but we have that fixed so now we can start working on set up stuff. We have been a little tight, but we freed it up some to make it more drivable. I think we’ll be in pretty good shape from here on out. I started front row outside, and the track was pretty top side dominant. We just put it on the cushion. The track was in really good shape tonight. I thought it was great with 2 grooves. When I hit lapped traffic, I moved to the bottom and that was good too. Roger did a great job tonight. I have to thank all of my crew, my Mom and Dad and my wife. I couldn’t do it without them” he said. Clint’s sponsors include Moore’s Concrete, PNBSports.com, Jet Racing, Pierce Family Racing, Behnke Lawn Care, Royal Purple, NAPA Auto Parts and Homan’s Auto.
Scott Bivens led the first circuit of the Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmod A Feature in his S56 with Derek Hall’s 44D, the 31 of Jacob Swanson and the 44 of McLain Reed close behind. Swanson fell to fourth on lap 2 and gave the spot up to Adam Armstrong in the 6A the next time around. Armstrong moved to third the following lap and advanced to second after another circuit. Armstrong continued his march forward, grabbing the lead the succeeding lap as Joe Feyen put the 25X into fourth. Hall again snagged fourth the next lap. Feyen advanced to third with 7 to go but gave the spot back to Hall after another lap. Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth the following lap and passed Hall for third with 2 to go making the top 4 Armstrong, Bivens, Wayman and Hall.
Adam said “I really love racing here at Eagle. It’s been quite a while since I got an A Feature here, but since I moved to third shift I just don’t get the chance very often to go racing. I want to, most of all thank my family because they make it possible. My Dad builds me awesome engines. Of course, my Mom and stepdad, Mark and Kathy Wasserman”. Adam’s sponsors include Renee Bartlett Insurance, Tracy Motorsports, Jet Racing, Icon Pistons, Scat Crankshafts, JOMAR Performance and Schmidt Machine.
The finale for the evening featured the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Brandon Horton in the 1B, Dennis Engelhaupt’s 30, the 28 of Bobby Eubanks and Chase Weiler’s 0 were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Eubanks passed Engelhaupt on lap 2 for second. The next circuit saw Weiler advance to third with the 12N of Neil Nickolite moving up to fourth. Josh Riggins looped the 14J on the back stretch on lap 8 for a caution. On the restart Nickolite grabbed the lead with Joey Danley putting the 14 into fourth. Danley moved to third the next time around and got up to second on lap 10. Tyler Drueke advanced to fourth in the 12 on lap 14 and advanced to third with 5 to go. The next lap saw Jason Danley’s 4X get up to fourth. Despite all attempts to catch him Nickolite moved away from the pack to win with Joey Danley second, Drueke third and Jason Danley fourth.
This marked Neil’s first visit to victory lane in a sprint car. He stated “We’ve been really close out here a lot of times, but it seems like it was always lapped cars or green/white/checkers that get us And then with drivers like Boston, Drueke and the Danleys it seems like they go by you like you’re tied to a fence post. That first caution I looked at the leader board and there was 18 to go and the car had been really good those first laps and that made me kind of nervous. We kind of checked out there for a while until I got next to Benson and Lovegrove, and they’re so good at what they do that and I was trying to be good at what they’re good at and run the bottom. I was really looking for Joey and Tyler or Jason to be coming up. I did not drive a perfect race by any means, but somehow I was just good enough to pull it off. To win here at Eagle, it’s huge!! I think I’m the youngest driver out here. I was racing a go kart at Mini E Speedway when Roger talked me into moving up to a sprint car. Watching the Grossenbachers and Danleys and especially Mike Boston; I’ve grown up watching all of the great drivers out here and wanting to be like them. I finally reached the moment where I can say I am like them because I finally won out here!!! I race in memory of Corey Kallenbach, but this win was all for Butch Bade”.
Neil’s sponsors include D & J Truck Repair in O’Neill, CK Bar and Grill, Classic Sand and Gravel, Speedway Racing Engines, Pro Shocks and Butch Bade Racing.
