Zoubek, Danley, Richards, Armstrong & Vanover are victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Get Fired Up!

By Greg Soukup

With just 2 weeks left in the regular season, a huge crowd showed up at Eagle Raceway Saturday for Get Fired Up! Night, presented by Empire Fence, High Noon and the Lincoln Stars. And a beautiful night it was with sunny skies, a nice northerly breeze and temperatures falling from the high 70’s to the lower 70’s by feature time.

With the IMCA Sprint Car Racesaver Nationals just 2 weeks away there were several out-of-town visitors getting some extra laps in on the high banks, requiring a C Feature for the class.

There were 2 incidents in the IMCA Racesaver Sprint heat #1. Alex Davenport got his #25A into the marbles in turns 3 & 4, ended up getting sideways before the right-side tires dug in and sent him into a slow rollover. A couple laps later Clint Benson’s 100 got sideways in turns 1 & 2 and ended up flipping. Neither driver was hurt and both rejoined the action later in the evening.

Nick Beckman’s 22, the 51 of Deven Schelm, Tim Horsham in the #3 and the 22S of Shane Stutzman led the field after 1 circuit of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car feature. Stutzman passed Horsham for third on lap 2. Horsham got out of shape the next lap, spun and collected the 30 of Jordan Grabouski and Cade Richards’ 1R. That allowed Kyle Vanover to move the #19 to fourth. Vanover took advantage of the restart to jump up to second. Lap #7 saw Jeremy Bohlen spin out the 10J in turns 3 & 4 for another caution. That allowed Vanover to again use the restart to advance, this time to first. Bohlen again spun out on lap 9, again in 3 & 4. Nathan Landauer put the 11N into fourth when the action got going again and moved up to third with 8 to go. Jeff Ware cracked the top 4 with 5 to go, putting the 83 into fourth before moving up to third 2 laps later. The final change in the top 4 came the next time around when Beckman moved back up to fourth. Vanover, Stutzman, Ware and Beckman were the top 4.

When I first caught up to him he said, “Finally I get to talk to you about me, not about Jordan (Grabouski had to leave early the week prior and Kyle let me know he had left)”. He continued  by stating “The motor ran good tonight; the Speedway Motors engine surely wasn’t lacking power! The track tonight was kind of like last week; a little tricky. You had to just hold on and try to keep your speed up. You’re just trying to keep the car going and go as fast as you could. Stuff has been going really really good for us, so if I don’t make a bonehead move and get tangled up with Jordan or something, as long as I don’t mess it up myself I think we might be able to do it again next week”. Kyle’s sponsors include Cadillac Chassis, Green’s Heating and Plumbing, , Speedway Race Engines, Speedway Shocks, Jordan Grabouski Racing, Salon Nouveau, Anden Bruns Construction and Schlake Farms.

Shawn Hein in the 5H was first back to the flag stand on the first lap of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod main event with Roger Sluka’s 5S second, Adam Armstrong  third in the 6A and Shawn Pospisil’s 6SJ fourth. Armstrong passed both Hein and Sluka on lap 2 for the lead as Gary Saathoff put the 96 into fourth. Saathoff jumped to second on lap 6 with James Hines moving the 31R into fourth and Drake Bohlmeyer taking third in his 24. Noah Williams moved the #27W past Hines with 8 to go. 2 laps later Adam Vrbka got past Hines to put his #7V into fourth. Williams retook the fourth spot the next time around but lost it back to Vrbka the following circuit. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Saathoff, Bohlmeyer and Vrbka.

I mentioned to Adam that he had moved to the front pretty quickly and he related “It was a pretty good battle for those first few laps. I just had to make sure that I got through it clean. After a rough couple of weeks, I was able to start third row inside. The last 2 weeks I’ve had DNFs, so that knocked my point average down enough that I was able to start closer to the front. The track was fun tonight. Roger did a heck of a job with it tonight. I love how he’ll go out and work it at intermission to put a little moisture in it. That gives us multiple lanes to race on. When the track is like this that’s when it’s most fun. You can let it hang out and get really aggressive with it. It was a lot of fun!! I don’t think we had any yellows, so we get in free next week!!!”.

Next up was the finale for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tanner Dowty’s #7 led the first circuit followed by Nick Jensen’s 22J, the 94 of Mike Hansen and Don Hall Jr’s 92. Dave Carter passed Hall Jr. to take fourth in the 2C. Ryan Gilland too fourth from Carter the next lap in the #46 and advanced to third the following circuit before taking second after another lap was in the books as Dowty held second and Carter was  fourth. Carter moved up to third on lap 5 as Brad Schreiner put the #10 into fourth place. Schreiner spun in turns 3 & 4 the next time around allowing the 26L of Brint Lemke to grab fourth. The restart saw Hansen move to first and Dillon Richards put the 24R into fourth. Lemke took the spot back the next circuit but lost it back to Richards with 9 to go. Gilland passed Hansen for the lead with 7 to go as Richards jumped all the way up to second. Richards took over the lead 2 laps later as Adam Wasserman put the 41 into fourth. Wasserman moved up to third in the closing laps to make the final top 4 Richards, Gilland, Wasserman and Hansen.

I told Dillon that he was again getting greedy. He replied “I’ve got to do it! I need 1 more win and that will make 25 for the year to help me in my run for the IMCA Championship. There for awhile I didn’t think I was going to get there because I was pretty boxed in. It was hard to pass because the track was so fast! I struggled there for a while, but then I got to the top and I let ‘er eat around the top”. Dillon’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait & Tackle, Inline Healing, Jet Racing, Jordan Grabouski Racing, S&L Trenching, Hamilton Construction and Stinger Race Engines.

Lap #1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A saw Jared Deterding’s 13J make serious contact with the X52 of Sean Manning. Jaxon Saathoff took the 96 to the pits as did Manning. A complete restart showed Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 5S of Bob Zoubek, Rik Gropp in the V45 and Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z leading the field to the green flag. Zoubek took the lead on the first official lap followed by Pella, Gropp and Ziegenbein. Lap 5 saw Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth place. Deterding looped his racer on lap 8 in turns 4. Jordan Grabouski jumped up to third in the #30 on the restart with Hiatt retaining fourth. Grabouski advanced to second the next time around. There were 10 laps left when John Saathoff put the 96J into third with Pella falling back to fourth. Hiatt got past Pella for fourth the next time. No changes occurred in the remaining laps so Zoubek won with Grabouski second, John Saathoff third and Hiatt fourth.

This was Bob’s second victory at Eagle Raceway this year. He said “I’d rather be lucky than good I guess. The track was really well prepared tonight and definitely to my liking. With an open motor the moisture really helps me out. The open motor and the moisture is to my advantage on a track like this and helped get me to the front quickly. I want to dedicate this win to Kevin Olsen, a fellow racer and good friend from Dorchester who passed away Friday”. Bob’s sponsors include Baker Boys Racing, Noonan Motorsports, Mahloch Motorsports, Schweitzer Farms, Behrens Family Sweetcorn, Kohmetscher Roofing and Klein Construction.

The first lap of the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver A Feature saw Ty Ledger out front in the 35L, followed by the 84 of Max Roseland, Mike Boston’s 51 and the 14 of Joey Danley. Danley passed Boston on lap 5 for third. Boston dropped out the following lap, putting the 22D of Dan Neckolite into fourth place. Jake Bubak passed Neckolite the next circuit to put the 74B into fourth. Danley moved up to second on lap 8. Jake Galusha’s 8B slowed the next time around in turns 3 & 4 for a caution. Bubak used the restart to advance to second while Danley took over the lead. Trevor Grossenbacher slowed on the back stretch with 4 to go, slowing the action again. It was a high-speed chase to the checkers with Danley winning, Bubak second, Ledger third and Josh Riggins in the 14J.

Joey stated “The last 2 weeks have gone fairly well, but the week before that was probably the worst night I ever had in racing. We’re bouncing back pretty well. We had a pretty successful night tonight. Because of that bad night I got to start fifth, so maybe I should have a bad night more often because that helped a ton! It’s nice to get up front early. Just because we started where we did doesn’t mean it was easy. I mean it was easy. Ty Ledger had a rocket tonight. I kept getting yellow after yellow so I got to start on his rear bumper. If it had gone green/white/checkers I don’t think I could have caught him. I think we went 3 wide for second because I saw Bubak’s nose. I knew I could clear them both because I had the top and I had the momentum off of four. I knew I had to shut the door on them and I did. I saw Bubak’s nose several times again the rest of the race but he must not have gotten a big enough run to try and slide me. Whenever you can hold him off you’ve done something, especially for the win. The track was best on the bottom of 1 & 2. I would have loved to run the top there, but I tried it 3 or 4 times and it was a little bit bumpy up there and the car would start bouncing and you’d lose all of your momentum. The bottom coming out of 2 had a lot of moisture, so that’s where you had to be and that’s where I spent the rest of the race after I took the lead. It makes me feel good knowing that he had a good car too and he was searching everywhere but couldn’t catch us”. I asked if this was just a tune-up for the IMCA Sprint Car Racesaver Nationals and he replied, “You can say that”. I corrected him by stating “I said that! I want to know what you think” and he said We’re out here fighting for a points championship, but I think we wrapped that up tonight so to cap it off tonight and hold off Bubak, I would call it a hell of a night!!!:.

Next Saturday is The Final Countdown, presented by A1 Iron and Mammoth Station. With all points championships still up for grabs, you won’t want to miss this one!!
