Harder, Macku, Saathoff, Meyer & Forler victorious at Armed Forces Night
The heavy rains that caused all of the area tracks to cancel last night and tonight didn’t keep the Eagle Raceway track prep crew from working long and hard in order to make a raceable surface for Armed Forces Night at “America’s Home Track” Saturday night. Despite 2 short showers as the heats were underway, it never came down hard enough to stop the racing.
All of the heats were run without serious incident.
Marty Steinbach’s #5 was in the lead at the end of the initial lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature followed by the 20 of Lindsey Yost, Jeremy Noonan’s 33 and the 96 of Gary Saathoff. Lap 2 saw Saathoff move up to third with Denny Ray Berghahn’s 6 taking fourth. Berghahn and Saathoff spun on the front stretch the next time around, sending them to the rear. That allowed Max Harder in the 34 and Nelson Vollbrecht’s 11X to take third and fourth. Benji Legg took fourth in the 25B on the restart as Harder advanced to second. Yost went extremely high in 3 & 4 on lap 4, falling back a couple of positions. Steve Swarthout spun his 23 at the flag stand after 2 more laps were in the books making the top 4 Steinbach, Harder, Legg and Yost. One lap after the restart Yost spun on the back stretch, moving Brain Langdale’s #1 to fourth. Steinbach’s engine apparently let go after 2 more laps. That moved Harder, Legg and Langdale up one spot and Saathoff took over fourth. Saathoff advanced 1 more position 3 laps after the restart. At the finish it was Harder, Legg, Saathoff and Langdale. “It was great getting my first win at Eagle. I’ve been racing for 9 years now, the first 5 in hobby stocks before moving up to a sport modified. I’m so glad that we actually had a track to race on after everyone else cancelled” Harder said. “I want to thank Russell, Kelly, Andrea, my mother and my sister” he added. Max’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Jet Racing, Garst Seed, Schmidt Farms, Schlake Motorsports and Team Aron.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next. Robbie Hobus’ 83 spun on the front stretch on the first lap of their A Feature and Brent Schlake’s Z34 slowed a short distance in front of Hobus. Don Hall Jr.’s 92 was first back to the flag stand on the first official lap with Adam Vrbka’s 7v, Derick Noonan’s 21 and the 44 of Andrew Lewis close behind. RJ Macku brought his 1R up to fourth on lap 2, moving up to second the next time around as Lewis grabbed third and Josh Kennell advanced the 71K into fourth. Kennell took just 3 more laps to overtake Lewis for third. 1 more lap had been completed when Macku snared the lead and Chad Fegley took fourth in the 13F. Roy Armstrong cracked the top 4 after 5 more circuits. Fegley advanced to second after 3 additional laps were in the books. The top four at the end were Macku, Fegley, Armstrong and Noonan.Macku related “I don’t plan on winning when I come out honestly. I come out to do my best, stay out of trouble and be consistent. If you do that, the wins will come”. RJ’s sponsors include The Shop Inc, FRE Racing Engines, Chris High Painting and Red Line Grafix. The Rev Honey IMCA
Modifieds came onto the track next. Terry Richards’ 18, the 94 of Dan Nelson, Bruce Hascall’s 7A and the 5S of Bob Zoubek were out front after 1 lap was completed. Zoubek moved up 1 spot to third on the next lap. Lap 3 saw a big mess on the front stretch involving Bob Ruisinger’s 7, Mike Densberger’s 81, the V45 of Rik Gropp and Doug Deterding in the 13. This caused the red flag to be displayed. Roger “Chevy” Hadan spun the #4 in 1 and 2 on the restart. Zoubek took 1 lap after the restart to move to third. Hadan again spun the next time around, this time in turn 4. Scott Bivens got up to fourth on the restart. Chris Abelson advanced to fourth in the 1X the next lap and took over third after 1 additional circuit. Zoubek again took third shortly after that. 3 more laps were in the books when Ed Raines looped the 11AA in turns 3 & 4. With 10 laps left Abelson passed Zoubek again for third and then moved up to second after another circuit. With 8 left Johnny Saathoff got the 96J up to third as Richards moved to fourth, while Abelson snared the lead. Saathoff got up to second the next time past the flag stand. Dylan Smith lost the right front tire off of the #95 and stopped at the top of turns 3 & 4 with 1 more lap in the books. That made the running order Abelson, Saathoff, Nelson and Zoubek who had temporarily won his battle for the spot with Richards. Richards got back past Zoubek 2 laps later as Saathoff took the lead. The top 4 finishers were Saathoff, Abelson, Nelson and Richards. Saathoff related “The JR Motorsports, Jet Racing, 96KX car was really fast tonight. I feel really lucky getting the win after starting in the 7th row”. He finished the interview by saying “I love coming up to Eagle. Roger always puts on a great show for the fans. I mean, you break some times, but it’s sure worth it when you win”.
The fourth A Main was for the Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts. Chad Bassinger’s 4X was out front at the end of lap 1 followed by Barry Kinnersley’s 00, the 5M of Melissa Cronin and Jeremy Peckham’s 32. Kinnersley dropped out on lap 5 as Jordan Wehling’s 58J took the third spot. The next lap saw Cameron Meyer’s 21 come up to fourth as Wehling dropped out. At that time it was Bassinger, Cronin, Meyer and Peckham. Four laps after the restart Meyer passed Cronin for second. It took just 3 more circuits for Meyer to move up to first as Kyle Gannon’s 66G took fourth. At the checkers it was Meyer, Bassinger, Cronin and Gannon. Meyer could not be located for an interview.
Stu Snyder’s 23S held the point after the first lap in the Budweiser 360 sprint Feature. He had Mike Boston’s 51, the 28 of Ken Klabunde and Terry Holliman’s 23 hot on his push bumper. Gene Acklund spun the 14G on lap 4, bringing out the yellow flag. Boston spun in turns 1 & 2 on the restart, collecting Tige Jensen’s 71 who rolled his sprinter. The 77 of John Klabunde also was involved. That moved Holliman up to third and the 2L of Logan Forler into fourth. Ken Klabunde grabbed the lead from Snyder after 2 laps were run. The next lap saw Forler take third and Jack Dover moved his #53 into fourth after 1 more circuit. Forler moved up one more spot after another 3 laps, only to be passed by Snyder the next time around. Forler vaulted into the lead after 3 more laps as Snyder took second. Dover got around Snyder the next lap and grabbed the lead with 7 to go. There was a yellow flag however, making the top 4 Forler, Dover, Snyder and Ken Klabunde. Dover was evidently reluctant to move back to second and ended up being penalized 2 positions, putting him in fourth. Dover again advanced to third on the restart and then to second with just 4 laps left. Snyder overtook Dover the next time around but Ryan Roberts spun the 18 in turn 4. At the checkers it was Forler, Dover, Snyder and Ken Klabunde. “I like this track” Forler said. “I’m happy to see so many fans showed up, despite the weather. I will definitely be back, for the Eagle Nationals at least, if not before. I will make it happen. This is definitely a racy joint” he continued. He concluded the interview by relating “I want to give a big thanks to Shark Racing Engines, Troy Renfro and my dad Steve (Steve Forler Trucking) for all of their help”.
