Kyle McCutcheon Wins Championship Night of 1/3 Mile IMCA Sprint Super Nationals

The finale of the 1/3 Mile IMCA Sprint Super Nationals, presented by Coors Light was held Sunday on the high banks of “America’s Home Track”, Eagle Raceway on a night nearly perfect for racing. Mid 80’s temperatures turned to low 70’s as the night progressed. A good sized crowd showed up to see invaders from all over the country take on the sprint drivers from Eagle to see who would come out on top. One of those invaders, Seth Brahmer, set a new track record for the Racesaver 305 sprints, laying down a lap of 13.129 seconds in his heat.

In the second heat for the IMCA Sprint Cars Matt Richards had the right rear wheel snap off of his mount going into turn 1, sending him flipping. Richards was unhurt, but his racer was too badly damaged to be repaired in time to continue.

Matt Moyer grabbed the lead early in the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Feature and had moved out to a full straightaway lead, but was caught up with a back marker and spun after contact with them on lap 9. That dropped Moyer to fifth. Chad Bassinger then made his move in the 4X; taking over fourth, moving to second 3 laps later and taking the lead for good the lap after that. At the finish it was Bassinger, Josh Johnson’s 25 second, the 3 of Tim Horsham third and Larry Cronin’s 5 in fourth.

“We decided to build a new car, got it done in 2 days, and it won Friday night and tonight too. We broke a strut in our heat tonight, but thanks to all of these guys we got it fixed in time for the feature” Bassinger said. His last thoughts were “Thanks to everybody who helped us this year, and to your wife for giving me the lucky wristband again today. The biggest thanks go out to my family and my sponsors who allow me to come out here to have fun every weekend.” Bassinger’s sponsors include Higley Chiropractic, Kreifel Plumbing, Warehouse Antiques, Shipley Flooring and Landis Engine.

Next up was the A Main for the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds. The first lap saw 2 cars lose their driveshafts just after the green flag dropped. Both the 3T of Nate Thompson and Bob Zoubek’s 5S ended up going to the pits on the hook after making up the front row of the lineup. Clint Homan took advantage of having moved up a row and put his #27 out front of lap #1 with Chevy Hadan’s 4 in second, the 3 of Chris Alcorn third and Justin Wulf’s 86 holding down fourth. The yellow flag again came out on lap 2 for debris. Johnny Saathoff took advantage of the restart to pass Wulf, making the 96J the fourth car in the race. Saathoff also passed Alcorn on lap 5 to advance to third. The final change in the top 4 came when Dustin Andersen moved his 8A into fourth. The top four ended up Homan, Hadan, Saathoff and Andersen.

“We’ve been running all over the area lately in our new GRT chassis by Schoman Motorsports. I haven’t run Eagle regularly for a lot of years, but I guess I remembered how to win here” Homan related. “I got lucky, starting second row inside and getting the pole after the front row cars dropped out. Taking the lead on a good track like this makes it easy to win” he continued. Homan finished the interview by saying “I want to thank my wife Kylie and my daughter Riley Cruz for supporting me in my racing. Also my crew deserves the credit. My dad, Ray, Corey and Jeff do a great job”. Homan’s sponsors include Homan Auto, Auto Zone and Schoman Motorsports.

The evening’s final race was for the title of champion of the inaugural IMCA Sprint Supernationals. 7-time track champion Mike Boston’s feature race was short-lived and ended on lap 1 after he got loose and tangled with another car sending the #51 flipping through turn 1. Boston was unhurt and walked back to the pits. The 14G of Gene Ackland also went to the pits to have a flat right front tire replaced after contact with another car on the start. After the race restarted Kyle McCutcheon’s #5 led the initial circuit followed by the 27 of Andy Shouse, Lacey Tuttle’s #50 and the 00 of Gregg Bolte. Bolte moved past Tuttle on lap 3 to take over third. Lap 5 saw Jason Howell’s 44H also pass Tuttle to move up to fourth. Steven Shebester’s 82 stopped on the front stretch on lap 15 to slow the action again. Doug Lovegrove’s #1 moved to fourth when Shouse spun in turn 4. Lovegrove moved up to third with 8 to go. Lovegrove and Jason Martin’s 36 both passed Bolte in the waning laps to make the final top 4 McCutcheon, Lovegrove, Martin and Bolte.

When asked his thoughts after having towed 17 hours from Alamogordo, New Mexico to race, McCutcheon said with a grin “Where I’m from people aren’t so nice. Everyone here has been great, except your tech people”. He continued by stating “I’m just kidding of course. We’ve had a great time here and all of the folks we’ve met were fantastic”. He concluded the interview by relating “I absolutely love this track. THIS is what a sprint car track should be. I’m what you call a top feeder. Saturday night someone said that the fast way around here was to bang your right rear off of the wall, so I did. I was surprised when somebody told me that the 51 was doing that way before I did. Well, I was going to make sure that no one beat me to the cushion tonight! When they put wings on sprinters they had the wall in mind, and that’s where I love to run!”.

There is just one more race to be run at Eagle Raceway this year. Next Sunday the ASCS Midwest Region headlines the Nebraska Cup, presented by the Nebraska Lottery. The ASCS/NCRA 360 sprint cars will headline the evening’s events with the SLMR Late Models as the support class. Miss Nebraska Cup 2013 will be crowned at intermission.

The pits will be open from 3:30 until 4:30 for driver and Miss Nebraska Cup autographs. The front gates will open at 4:30 with hot laps at 5:30 and racing starting at 6:30. Front gate adult admission is $15, youths 6-12 are only $5 and children 5 and under are free.

Pit gates open at 2 P.M. and pit admission is $30.
